Big Corn Harvest Day!

It's the last day of Corn Harvest on my farms! We finished a corn on corn farm, and then moved to one of the farms that I rent. We had a really good year despite the dry conditions over the summer, and the drain tile improvement we did last fall has helped a ton on corn yields! Next video we'll be hauling the combine up to Spencer's Farm. Trying to get back in the swing of editing real-life videos now that the crazy American Farming launch is over, and things are winding down a bit.

It’s better to wait for the dew to come off your corn plants, because it will be dryer and it will feed through the combine easier. That’s my thoughts.

Too much wet material running through the combine can start plugging your seives and that will result in throwing it out the back if you start getting too much going out the back even with dry material you might try opening the seives and possibly check the snapping rolls on your corn head can cause issues with it feeding too much plant material

5 years ago I bought a section that had been in CRP for 30 years. I remember it as a kid being really poor ground, used up. But that CRP raised the organic matter and I made sure and maintained it. It’s one of the better farms I have. Planting date is huge,,,,, don’t dilly dally and get it in the ground. As few acres as you have planting date should never be an issue. Just make good choices with maturity on your seed.

Yea you need to wait until the plants are mostly dry. The wet trash will stick on the chaffer/walkers as you found out. Will walk the kernels out the back.

You can start early if there’s snow on the leaves and it’s real cold. Otherwise like you found, waiting til the leaves are dry is best. It’s nice having a yield monitor that clues you in on that stuff right away

The farmer I work with will generally wait till mid morning to harvest corn. It’s harder to run through the combine when it’s wet and it also generally is wetter and cost more to try so it’s worth waiting a little bit.

Very glad to see another video, by now, I think you should invest a semi for your operation. Not only would it be easier and quicker for you getting grain off the field, but you would be able to haul your own equipment with a cheap lowboy or beavertail.

It is better to wait till the dew dries off for shelled corn but if picking cob corn for grinding feed start as early as possible after frost melt. The dew on the shucks lets the picker get a better grip on the pliable shuck and strip it off. Usually after about 1 o'clock the corn dries too much, gets slick and it doesn't shuck very well till the dew falls in the evening.

There are covers for the round bar concaves that can be put in the center RH side to help push corn to the middle. Can also install covers in the precleaner to help push the corn to the chaffer and not into the cleaning fan. Your combine would need three covers for the precleaner since it's a narrow body.

Start a bit later,go a bit later. Grain bins are cheap. Electric augers *non-swing* are cheap. Great content. Donahue, or GN flatbed over 22’. Get a 6000 or less bin 24’ or less within 60 miles. $400 for bin with floor, 6” unload. You spend a hour plus marking stuff 2x. Then remove floor, stands *keep mark8ng* next day remove bottom 3+ rings. Back trailer binder roof top 2+ rings. *check height* most areas 14’ will work, often over 15’will clear if temps under 75F. Check with truck first. Strap, drive home Sunday dawn 2/trailer pickup. 1/3 the work. Put on cemented foundation. Assemble, hook up. 17% corn can be air dried in bin if humidity under 60%. Or frozen most years. You can put loads on weekends, night, holidays to haul later when price increases. Cement and auger your biggest expense. (Two auger’s better). One to fill bin, one shorter to empty. $3500 nice 8-10”x 61’. $1300 8-10x+30’
