We have another report from Deadline with an update on the Harry Potter tv show and this one says a big decision could be coming soon.
There’s also a brand new name that’s been thrown into the mix for us to consider.
According to Deadline, the 4 names being considered were British writer Marth Hillier, mostly known for her work on The Last Kingdom; Kathleen Jordan, creator of the Teenage Bounty Hunters; Tom Moran, the British writer behind The Devil’s Hour; and Michael Lesslie, writer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Now we have a new name from Deadline that’s apparently being considered. Francesca Gardiner is reportedly one of three finalists to land the job.

A new scripted Harry Potter television series is coming! The series will be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter books, marking a momentous new chapter for the Wizarding World. Here’s everything we know so far.
In April 2023, it was revealed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max Streaming Press Event that the Harry Potter books are to be adapted into a new TV series.
The news comes in tandem with the announcement that US streaming giant HBO Max will soon become Max - and the new Harry Potter television series will be a Max Original when it launches in the US. .
The new adaptation will introduce you to a new cast for a new generation of fandom, and will be full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations we have loved for over 25 years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and his incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.
The Harry Potter books were first adapted for the screen back in 2001, paving the path for what would become a beloved 8-film series that we still celebrate today. They will always be at the heart of the magic, but we are excited to hear we will have the opportunity to relive these stories in exciting new ways.
Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content described Harry Potter as a ‘cultural phenomenon’.
“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” he said. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”
J. K. Rowling, who will serve as an Executive Producer said of the news: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”

Please, don't hire any writers that want to make it for "modern audiences". This usually just means they want to change the characters from how they've been written or how they act and look. An adaptation should be helmed by someone who knows and loves the source material and not one who wants to change it because of their own ideals.

Exactly. Honestly, I really don't think they should bother making this series at all. It's never going to capture the story as well as the books so I'd rather they focus on making something new, maybe a Hogwarts Founders series.

I said it before in another comment: I hope they don't híre a writer "with a Vision". This thing has a source material. There is no extra Vision needed. A faithful adaptation doesn't and shouldn't include anything related to a subjective personal "vision" or way of thinking about the show / adaptation in one's "unique way".

Completely agree. I just made a comment saying I hope they don't butcher the source material in favour of their "vision". This series needs people to understand the characters & the core of what HP is about, not some revisionist crap that has character assasination from top to bottom in favour of current trends. If you change the core of what made those characters believable & loved in the first place & expect everyone to accept that & be on board, you invite opposition & disagreement from the start.

I would disagree. There needs to be a vision because it’s being produced through a new medium. There should be a vision on how it’s handled. But story-wise, yes there is source material. But a writer also contributes to how scenes are structured, so that’s why I say there needs to be a vision for how to handle it in a TV format.

@@thats_suber generally yes, but many times these books - despite JRK said it was never her Intention for HP to be visually adapted - The books already describe very close descriptions to évem possible camera angles. Also I'm pretty sure what you said is not really called a "vision" but rather a "Technical implementation". Either way, my part about the "vision" is the same as yours, I generally meant the story too :)

WOW! When they first announced that HBO would be doing the Harry Potter TV series, their work on His Dark Materials was EXACTLY what I referenced as an example that they can do more family friendly book adaptations really well and stick very closely to the source material! I have both read the books and seen the tv series and I was VERY impressed at how accurate the show was. Obviously turning books into tv episodes isn't easy and changes do have to be made in order for it to 'work' on screen, but in the case of their His Dark Materials series, those changes never took away from the story and never caused confusion. I'm incredibly excited by this development! 🎉

@@RetroRaconteur I haven't done the research, but do any of the other candidates have experience adapting a young adult, multi-book fantasy series into a tv show? If nothing else, I think they should be looking at people with a similar level of hands on experience doing this kind of work. Honestly, the His Dark Materials series is the closest thing I can think of to compare Harry Potter to in terms of similarity. There are a TON of fantasy tv shows obviously but very few that balance the world we know and recognize with magic. Shows like The Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, Shadow & Bone, Game of Thrones etc are all set in a completely made up world. You can do anything and get away with it because it isn't reality. His Dark Materials and Harry Potter are both set in worlds we recognize and relate to. It's a MUCH greater challenge to tell a story that doesn't sound ridiculous or impossible given that constraint! We need a writer who understands that and can weave the correct balance between the two.

Yeah I never caught this in the early 2000's, it wasn't untill years later where I said..wait a minute they gave Rons lines to Hermione! ( it was also to due to Rupert Grint forgetting his lines constantly) though they still should have went with "ARE YOU A WITCH OR WHAT!", sadly that continued straight through the entire movie series...reducing Ron to the role of jester, instead of street wizard capable smart guy he is, sure he has his flaws but every character does. Thank Steve Kloves for the change.

You're definitely correct it needs someone who understands the book characters. If they adapt it from the movie characters, you end up with a copy of a copy and that never ends well

if only they actually interacted with fans and set up discussion forums on events of the book they are unsure of. Many fans will explain their interpretation of book events, provide quotes from the books and potentially respectfully exchange different interpretations of the quotes.

@@mandalorianmama it’s as good as we’ll get most likely but she can be pressured to make adjustments due to certain audiences but fans aren’t as vulnerable to getting cancelled for staying true to the books. Plus no offence to JKR, but she has made statements against book information in the past multiple times so getting fans’ input just to make sure she doesn’t skip anything would be good. It’s understandable as well, she wrote the books so long ago it’s expected she won’t remember everything even if she is the author.

His Dark Materials was a great adaptation! Captured the essence of the books so well. I'm worried they decided to start this whole initiative with a remake. I would've loved to see something like the Marauders or Voldemort's stories adapted first...

Part of me cringed a little when Francesca spoke about Hermione. She is my favorite character in the books, but in the movies we had one guy who just loved Hermione too much and made her “perfect”, giving other characters’ best lines and actions to her. I really wouldn’t want a repeat of that. I’m glad she talked about the downfalls of being like Hermione.

It should be someone who respects and really loves what is written. They will then treat it with care and act in service of the story first and foremost. I often think of a writer as a vessel for a story that wants to be told, for lack of better phrasing.

His dark materials was a great show and a great adaptation. If she is the one in charge of the series I would be relief. I agree with you that whoever takes on writing the series HAS to love Hp. If they don't then don't even bother.

it was inaccurate to canon though of course but I think fans are more lenient to games plus it wasn't a book adaptation so more lenience again as it's not trying to be accurate. I think this tv series has more pressure to be accurate because it's telling the story in the books, unlike Hogwarts Legacy which has stuff from the books but it's a complete different story with some completely different concepts.

Nope, just rumors at this point, but they're all false. That won't start happening until we officially have a showrunner on board.

I'm not going to lie when I first heard about this announcement I was pretty much against the idea about a reboot of this franchise but over time it's grown on me to the point that I'd like to see what they can do better this time around. The movies will always be an important part to me but they weren't perfect by all means. I'm just trying to hold down my expectations, because I don't want to end up disappointed with how they handle these series going forward. I hope that whoever is the director and writer for this that JK Rowling has a final say in all their decisions etc so that they respect the books and characters.

Yep, this is pretty much where I'm at. It's not something I would have really asked for and it won't replace the movies, but there are PLENTY of things that could be improved upon for a new adaptation.

I just hope JKR has the final say & is at the fore front of the decision making, I hope she does not budge an inch over the very ones that villanised her. This series should be about shining a light on a what we never got to see in the movies & was left to the books instead. I don't get those who say "it's to early" the HP Movie series finished in 2011 almost 13 years ago with FB starting in 2015 & sadly being shelved...how is it to early? because of the failure of FB? or is it more to do with the current trend of butchering material instead of sticking to the source material, the secnond one is what springs to mind more. I want to see what the movies never showed, particularly Riddles return to the school to use the DADA position as recruitment for his ranks, seeing how Yates butchered that with Romance & comedy. Also snape never went to Godrics Hollow on the night of Harrys parents murder...that was just done ( for the movie) & to make him more sympathisable, which to me he is not. He's one of the reasons Harrys parents ended up with a target on their back & he has the audacity to bully Lilly & James's only son, though they ended up a target anyway but still. Snape going to Godric's Hollow that night is something I didn't like from the movies as well because it completely ruins his character and him switching to the good side. It would make little sense that Snape would know where they were that very night to come before Hagrid, it is technically possible if Dumbledore told him about it after Snape asked for him to protect Lily (not that exact seen as the book makes no mention of Dumbledore telling Snape that but if they met after this and before fidelius charm was activated which would prevent Dumbledore from sharing this as Peter would be secret keeper), but very unlikely for this to be the case. Also, it makes Snape still look bad when Snape's memories at that point at least show him switching sides to the good side. It would make no sense for him to come, see Lily dead, hug her body and cry and then simply leave baby Harry in the house unless he knew Hagrid was coming on Dumbledore's orders but again, very unlikely. The only way either of these points become plausible is if he was in constant communication with Dumbledore but at this point they weren't that close, have no book mention of it, nor would it be so simple for Snape to communicate that easily with Dumbledore. The movies sure made an emotional scene, but sacrificed it making sense.

If you're going to make a streaming series for the Wizarding World, at least make something original. How about a series that chronicles the founders of hogwarts? Or how about an American exclusive series for Ilvermorny?
