The Web Planet last!? How come everyone focuses on it's technical issues but not it's imagination and ambition? Even today's production with all the sfx has never attempted to produce a story without humanoids.

I have to agree, to an extent. It was one of the first Doctor Who DVDs I purchased/watched, back circa 2001ish - Yes I chuckled at the poor effects, but at the same time I admired the ideas and that ambition of what they were trying to capture, especially considering the small budget. It did used to be far more popular - mostly when people had read about it (the old Target novels) but not actually seen it, and were then a bit disappointed. But hey, couldn't the same said for 'Tomb of the Cybermen' when it was rediscovered? I will say the effects do let it down, but I do find it more entertaining that a few of the other Hartnell stories which - much as I love the first Doctor - can be a bit dull and heavy going occasionally.

Remember that this poll isn't really ranking the stories overall; it's ranking favorites only. So a low ranking simply means that the story is a top favorite of fewer people.

I can appreciate what this story did, and don't have a problem with people appreciating it. But it just has aged to the point where modern viewers going back to it can't get over the production choices as they've aged. Inventive, impactful, and leading in Sci-fi? Yes. But watching in full turns us newer viewers into pained puddles of flesh praying for the end...

Zaaaaaaarbi!! The Web Planet has always been a guilty pleasure. I've never been able to decide what is more abominable, the acting, the unintentionally hilarious choreography or the sloppiness of the direction. Vaseline on the camera lens, creatures that run into rocks or even the cameras and a general sense that Richard Martin just couldn't be bothered going back and fixing things. It also features some of Bill Hartnell's best fluffs. I don't know if it deserves to be at the bottom of the pile though... Other than that, other than moving a few serials up a few notches up and a few others further down, this is a very accurate assessment of the Hartnell era. My personal favourite is the Aztecs. Jacqueline Hill's greatest performance as Barbara and the wonderfully overcooked John Ringham as Tlotoxl, one of the best of the series' human villains and arguably, the only one who wins. Finally, congratulations on all of the wonderful feedback to your work on the Mission to the Unknown project. We all knew it was time that the BBC turned to you. Looking forward to your future endeavours! All the best from an elderly Whovian in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Just finished re-watching the Romans. What an amazing and efficient script. I particularly like the skillful way the Doctor and Vicki story is woven into Barbara's story with Nero. Both plot lines are kept separate but the numerous transitions between them are quick, clever and seamless. Dennis Spooner was one of the best script writers ever to work on Doctor Who. Vicki is also incredibly cute in this story. The Romans did well in this poll but probably should have been in at least the top five or even top three.

I can agree with this list. I'd move a few things about a few spots, however I feel that the rankings overall are good. One thing that is difficult in evaluating 60s Who are the missing episodes simply because (unless they are animated) there is no visual representation to understand the story. As an example, I found it very difficult to get into Marco Polo when I listened to it as I felt that story would work better visually, however The Massacre seemed to work well as an audio story. I hope one day for The Massacre, but also The Smugglers which seems like a fun historical!

Well, that was an interesting result. it proves what I've noticed many times that different generations like different stories. If this poll had been done in the sixties it would have been a massively different result. Nos. 1 and 29 would have been the other way around for a start. I mean no offence as this is a very interesting exercise but I think it proves what I've always said that opinion polls are only as good as those who bother to vote. I don't suppose many of the fans who watched these originally voted here. It's an interesting guide to what stories are popular amongst today's generation and to see how opinions have changed from one generation to the next but it has to be taken in context. The only way to get a true result is to ask everyone who has ever seen them but, of course, that is impossible. I'm not criticising and of course respect everyone's opinion.

SORRY HAD TO SPLIT UP! Alright, so lemme leave some thoughts, my personal rankings, and the difference my rankings have from the list (sorry, if too long!) Did at 1 in the morning, sorry if their are spelling mistakes! I might do this for every future entry aswell, Tom Baker's might take a while. - 1 - The Daleks' Master Plan (Story No. 21) Difference (=) This was clearly an undeniable favorite, I would be surprised if this wasn't number one, their are so many things that this story has going for it, and frankly it's one of those Doctor Who stories despite it's humongous run time, I could watch time and time again. A classic for the lack of better words. - 2 - The Dalek Invasion of Earth (Story No. 10) Difference: (=) This, again, is another pick that I would have been surprised if it hadn't landed in the top three. This story is one of the best Dalek stories out there, the post-apocalyptic Earth setting and some incredible tense senses, not only makes this a great Doctor Who story but a great piece of 60s television in general. Also, the departure of the dear Susan! Ahhh! - 3 - The Aztecs (Story No. 6) Difference: (+1) The best historical episode of Classic Doctor Who hands down. One of the first stories that tackle the idea of meddling with time and the consequences of changing history. A nice morality story with amazing looking sets and costumes, and brilliant acting from all the mains. - 4 - The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve (Story No. 22) Difference: (+8) Definitely a bit disappointing that this story didn't crack the top ten in the list, personally, it's one of my favorite historicals, and explores a time period of French history that I didn't even know existed until I watched this episode. It's a dark and bitter tale, that has an amazingly complex plot with significantly good acting from Purves and Hartnell. The final episode is one of the darkest from this era, and has, in my opinion, Hartnell's best monologue. - 5 - The Romans (Story No. 12) Difference: (+4) Not too surprised to see this one crack the top ten, typically heralded as one of the best historicals of the first doctor's. I think the problem with this story is time, it doesn't hold up as well in 2019 as it used too. I still find it an enjoyable romp, I have it in my top five! But, I see where criticisms can come from, but enjoy the hilarity this story provides regardless. - 6 - The Tenth Planet (Story No. 29) Difference: (-1) A great send off for a great Doctor, this story introduces quite a bit into the Doctor Who World that become mainstays for the series in the long and short term. This story of course introduces the Cybermen, who are undoubtedly the creepiest villains from the show, and regeneration! Changing the main actors, which is why the show has lasted this long! This story is also one of the first 'base-under-siege" stories we see, which of course, become quite prevalent in the next doctor's era. - 7 - The Time Meddler (Story No. 17) Difference: (-4) I'm actually a little surprised to see that this was in the top three, I thought it would be around where I ranked it. I think it's a great story, the first pseudo-historical, and introduces the first time lord antagonist in the show. The setting and acting in this one are great. I think the story suffers a little with it's pacing, but regardless, still good fun. - 8 - The Keys of Marinus (Story No. 5) Difference: (+8) Wow! This one didn't even crack the top ten! Big shock. I think this story suffers mainly because of Susan's characterization, this definitely isn't her best story not gonna lie, but I think the supporting cast make up for it by being memorable presences. The Voord gimp suits are a bit strange though, but I still love them. Every episode in this story feels like a self contained adventure, and makes it very re-watchable. Cool sets, cool all around! - 9 - Marco Polo (Story No. 4) Difference: (-1) I'm very happy to see this story crack the top ten, a great historical, that has the Doctor and co. running into trouble in Ancient China. Great supporting cast in this one, the mains are great as well. The sets and costumes for this one are phenomenal, and despite it run time, keeps you invigorated along the way. This story of course suffers from it being completely missing! Such a shame, as I'm sure if it existed, it would easily find it's way to top three. - 10 - The War Machines (Story No. 27) Difference: (-3) A decent story that introduces two companions that are more prominent in the next era of the show. Ben and Polly really are awesome companions, and one of my faves in their small time they spent with the first doctor. This story is a tense scientific story that has superb acting from Hartnell and cool on location filming. The War Machines themselves look a bit janky, but isn't that half the charm of Classic Who! Horrible send off for Dodo, but I mean, doesn't really matter right!

- 11 - The Chase (Story No. 16) Difference: (=) A fun story involving the Daleks that doesn't take itself too seriously and introduces one of the favorite companions from to 60s. The send off for Ian and Barbara was beautiful, and I'm very glad that it happened that way that it did. The story is a nice romp through space and time, and has some impressive sets, Purves is also the most handsomest companion! - 12 - The Ark (Story No. 23) Difference: (+8) I'm surprised to see this story under perform, I thought it would be a little higher. It's an imaginative story with a compelling plot and great sets. This is officially Dodo's first story, and she's actually not too bad in this one. I really like the main cast aswell, and the Monoids are just weird looking fellas, but still great! - 13 - The Rescue (Story No. 11) Difference: (=) A nice short but sweet story that introduces a new companion and has an interesting villain and great acting all across the board. A very re-watchable story with cool alien design. - 14 - The Daleks (Story No. 2) Difference: (-8) This might be controversial on my part, but this is easily the worst Dalek story of the 60s era. Their is nothing that is bad in the story except for it's pacing. This story could've easily been a 4 parter, but I just drags and drags. However, without this story and the introduction of the greatest TV villains of all time, Doctor Who would have never seen the light of day, so I have to give it props for that. Great atmosphere and sets aswell. - 15 - An Unearthly Child (Story No. 1) Difference: (-5) Eh, I think this story simply hit the top ten based off novelty of being the first episode alone. Because the story itself really isn't that great. The first part is amazing, it sets up the entire show perfectly in my opinion, and has a great balance of mystery and intrigue. Also, I don't think I've mentioned it yet, but the TARDIS is great! But the caveman part of the story is very cheap (shocker!) - 16 - The Gunfighters (Story No. 25) Difference: (+6) I think this story was ranked a bit low down actually. I know a lot of people think this story is crap because of the singing, "With rings on their fingers, And bells on their toes...". But I personally think that it's a fun story that doesn't take itself seriously and have nice pacing and an interesting setting. Underrated is a good word for this one. - 17 - The Space Museum (Story No. 15) Difference: (+7) Another story that I think has gotten shafted in this rank! I actually quite enjoy this story, and yes that means all 4 parts! The first part sets the story up magnificently, and really gives off a creepy aura of mystery. Again, this is a story I think doesn't take itself too seriously, but acting wise, Hartnell really is great in this one. - 18 - Mission to the Unknown (Story No. 19) Difference: (-4) A bit overrated, I understand the new recreation by the University of Lancashire just came out, which was brilliant! But this story just feels a bit un-needed in retrospect to the Daleks' Master Plan. It's still a good precursor with solid acting, but is also a bit meh when it comes to importance. Bit of a hot take sorry! - 19 - Planet of Giants (Story No. 9) Difference: (+6) I'm very surprised to find this story as low as it was, wow. I actually thought that I might be under reporting it in my rankings, but clearly not lol! This story is a fun take on scifi shrinking madness and I really think Susan shines quite a bit in this one. The sets also look really cool and imaginative. - 20 - The Savages (Story No. 26) Difference: (+3) A solid story that deals with an interesting concept, and a send off of one of the greats! I remember sobbing at the faint almost missed it style of Steven's departure, very sad indeed. But from what I could tell from the recons that sets look really cool, and the acting was solid. This story definitely suffers from being missing.

- 21 - The Edge of Destruction (Story No. 3) Difference: (-6) Yeah, I don't like this one as much. I still think this story has a lot to offer in terms of characterization and development of inter-TARDIS relationships early on in the show. But 50 or so minutes in the TARDIS is a bit of a drag even for a two parter. It also has a VERY unsatisfying conclusion. Hartnell has another great monologue in this one though. - 22 - The Myth Makers (Story No. 20) Difference: (-4) This story would be heralded if it survived. Tonally it's a bit all over the place, with pieces of comedy and serious historical drama mixed together, makes it seem a bit weird at points. The acting is great in this one however, and the setting is brilliant. Not much complaints, but wish it was a surviving episode! - 23 - The Reign of Terror (Story No. 8) Difference: (-4) A pretty average historical drama with the Doctor and co. The mains in the story are quite good in terms of acting, and I really enjoy the political drama similar to The Massacre. However, this story really drags on for far too long, I'm sorry, but the animation looks awful aswell. Still a little enjoyable, but mostly boring and predictable. - 24 - The Crusade (Story No. 14) Difference: (-7) I think I'm going to have to re-watch this one. I can't really remember much about the story, I not sure if that's just me (probably). The sets are cool however, and Jean Marsh is always a plus! - 25 - The Sensorites (Story No. 7) Difference: (+1) A fairly average story where Susan really shines for the first time in the show. The first two parts are a tense space thriller with interesting characters and great build-up. But then the story crashes and burns. This story REALLY comes to a grinding halt in it's second half and becomes a political snooze fest. - 26 - The Web Planet (Story No. 13) Difference: (+3) A imaginative and ambitious story that has some "interesting" effects and sets. For some reason the camera men thought it might be a good idea to smear Vaseline? on the the cameras the achieve some sort of low-oxygen atmosphere feel. I'm not too sure about this story. I congratulate it for being unique, but the budget at the time just doesn't hold up. - 27 - Galaxy 4 (Story No. 18) Difference: (=) A simple morality tale based on not judging a book by it's cover isn't that bad, but I feel this story has a lack of substance. It suffers a lot from being a mostly missing story. The sets a kinda cool? The only take away I have is needing to have a life size Chumbley robot pet. - 28 - The Celestial Toymaker (Story No. 24) Difference: (-7) Kinda surprised to see it as high as it was on the list. A story that involves a great villain, but because of it's missing state really fails as keeping me engaged. I remember falling asleep to this story multiple times while watching and having to rewind and re watch many scenes. It's boring, and they drop the n-word in the second episode, not cool. - 29 - The Smugglers (Story No. 28) Difference: (-1) I expected this story to be near the bottom. Nothing exactly wrong with this story, but nothing great about it either. The only talking point is that it happens to be Ben and Polly's first adventure in the TARDIS. Completely inoffensive, decent sets I guess, but very skippable, and starts to drag even for a 4 parter.

It’s such a weirdly divisive era. It’s the only one where most of the lower ranked episodes could easily have been in the top 10 on another day. (Planet Of Giants?!? The Web Planet?!? Lord, even The Gunfighters ain’t that bad. Like, I’m American. It’s the one story that should make me raise an eyebrow in a “this would be like John Ford directing a movie about the Battle of Culloden” kind of way, but... I really, really like it. It’s fun.) Then again, I can’t argue with the top 10 y’all picked. So I dunno.

While not really reflective of my own thoughts, I’m at least glad Time Meddler is up there. Are you going to explain all the stories of all the Doctors in relation to each other or just keep it era themed?

Well I'm confused...how do you rate something you haven't seen? The Dalek Master Plan and Marco Polo? How many people have seen them? Certainly not you Josh! Only people that have saw them at the time...once! Kudos for the list though. There will always be arguments. Thank you for saying Hartnell was your favourite Doctor and not the 'best'...the first five were all brilliant in their own way.
