What I took away from this is that we collect fuzz pedals not because they're all that different from one another but because it's fun to collect fuzz pedals.

I have the Ibanez fuzz and LOVE it. I power sag it to 6v and it gets nice and squishy and definitely has a certain character that I personally dig. I'm waiting on a Behringer Super Fuzz right now and can't wait to try it out! If your power supply has a power sag function I would HIGHLY recommend trying it out to change the character! Thanks for this comparison video! As a side note the Behringer is a clone of the Boss Hyper Fuzz FZ-2.

That's because it's based on the Boss FZ-2 which is based on the Univox Super Fuzz and has no relation to big muffs at all. Doesn't really belong in this comparison of muffs, but a comparison of different fuzzes/circuits maybe.

Samuel Cramphorn I’d recommend you feel better bc I would NOT recommend the Hoof, actually 🤷🏼‍♂️ lol I’m sure it can work great in some settings, but having played one just in a STORE it didn’t feel like it would cut in a mix 😬 lol Seemed even flatter/more two-dimensional than most Muffs! Again, apparently it’s great in SOME contexts otherwise it wouldn’t have the reputation it does, I suppose, but yeah, don’t feel bad saving your money. Good Muffs can be had at good prices.

As it happens I ended up using mine just in the ”Boost“ mode (stacked with another overdrive) which actually sounds really nice as I couldn't quite warm up to any of the two Fuzz modes (no matter how I set the knobs). Guess I haven't yet found the right pedal for the fuzz sound I've got in mind...

EHX Russian Big Muff, clear winner to my ears. The highs in the others get very shrill in comparison. Russian Big Muff sounds smooth through all gain settings also whereas some of the others get quite brittle. Not sure if the Behringer Super Fuzz is based on a Muff circuit (it is allegedly based on a Boss FZ2) as it sounds very different - not pleasant at all to me. The Hoof also sounds quite 'woofy' at higher gain settings whereas the JHS is not impressive at any gain settings.

Lol, that Behringher is like the Metal Zone of Fuzz! Crazy Range, but only a few "useable" areas. For the money I'd take the Mooer, would be epic for that bass tone these pedals are usually used for. For the Smashing Pumpkins Guitar tone I'd get either of the EHX white pedals -not tank green. That's my 2c -edit The Green one sounded best for the mid-emphasis Lead tone

That's actually my exact line up, I've owned the mooer triangle buff for about a year and it's great especially for its size and price. It also cuts in a mix just a bit better than the triangle muff but the triangle muff and Russian muff have heavier fuller low end which sounds massive on their own but completely get lost in a mix. But with a 10 band eq in the loop I can get my triangle buff to sound like any fuzz I want (same thing woukd work great if you own the green Russian or triangle muff). I really want to not like the Mooer triangke buff so I can build or buy a "real" muff but I just can justify it since the triangle buff performs so well. I build pedals btw so I'll likely build a zvex fuzz factory next then down the road use a 1590BB enclosure to house a triangle muff, Russian muff/rams head muff and an op amp muff all in the same enclosure. I'd have to draw up a circuit schematic from scratch which I'm confident I could do accurately but I don't have a breadboard yet so when I build my own pedal designs right now I've kept them simple so trouble shooting isn't a nightmare. With a breadboard I'll be able to do bigger more origional circuits with more confidence. My klon clone and the 100% from scratch and origional treble booster i built sound amazing and they will NEVER leave my board (the treble booster is loosely based on a Brian May style treble boost but designed around a low noise transistor that performs much better than anything else I've used, it makes the pedal less noisey without any character loss. In fact I'd strongly argue it sounds better than any other treble booster transistor commonly used. I built the pedal to have a shelf of different transistors inside the pedal and I put a 3 pin socket where the transistor goes so they can easily be swapped out to get differnt characteristics but the MPSA18 always is superior in every way but it's still lots of fun to try the different transistors for inspiration. I also added a level control at the end of the circuit after the gain control that only lowers the level a little so you are able to get the full power of the treble booster even if you need it to be a little bit lower in volume. 90% or more of treble boosters only sound good with the gain all the way up but that gets loud so having a level control that just takes off a bit is perfect(i just used a linear pot so it's a slow taper until the end where it quickly falls away, normally that would be bad but for this application it was perfect). And I decided to go with a three way dpdt on off on switch for a mid boost, stock treble boost, or full range bass boost.) I also mod pretty much all my pedals for extra versatility but I never sacrifice stock functionality for a mod. If I do any mods they are all wired to switches that can be turned on(modded) or off (stock). For example I added two bass boosts to my ts9 which works great with single coils if you want a warmer fuller more transparent drive. And my proco rat 2 I originally put an lm308 op amp in but it lost versatility so I did the ruetz mod but on an external trim pot That is selected by a switch, I also did that mod to the lower gain cap an resistor pair next to the ruetz mod's high gain cap an resistor pair. So each pair can be selected via on off on switch for stock, cap an resistor pair removed from the circuit(ruetz mod), or selected to be fed through a variable resistor in the form of a pair of external potentiometers(that allows you to dial in the amount of high end gain on one potentiometer and the amount of low end gain on the other so it can do stock tones and ruetz tones and thanks to the variable resistors/pots it can do everything in between also. That way it doesn't have to be crazy bright and thin like stock or completly warm with less gain like ruetz, it can be selected for stock or Ruetz. I find that dialing in the high gain cap/resistor pair potentiometer to be at the ruetz setting then bringing it back up just a little is the perfect sweet spot. At that setting you really can get a great overdrive tone. The reason I put back the OP07 op amp is because with my custom mods you can easily get the poor slew rate sound of an lm308 or choose to get the more efficient precise sound/benefits of the OP07(since the OP07 is more efficient an versatile it makes more sense to use it for versatility and use the mods to dial in the poor slew rate sound of an lm308. If the pedal was stock I'd probably prefer the lm308 but with the mods the OP07 is excellent and can cover ALL the rat tones. Wow, what a rant that was. Sorry lol, I love talking about this stuff an easily get carried away.
