Danny Ainge said the Utah Jazz want to go big game hunting. Big Game Hunting is hard when you have to add multiple pieces and the New York Knicks just stole a piece in Mikal Bridges by going all in for the top 50 player in the NBA. David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider explains these moves are harder for the Jazz when they have multiple pieces to deal with.
The NBA Draft is tonight and from the looks of 3 mock drafts the Utah Jazz choice is going to come down to Devin Carter, Rod Dillingham, Nikola Topic or Ron Holland.
Justin Zanik explains the scouting process and how you have to look for what the player can do.

Interesting find on Twitter yesterday, the context Danny said in relation to 'big game hunting' was chasing the top-tier teams in the West, NOT in relation to signing or trading for free agents. Ainge says "if we add a good player or two, then we're ready to go big game hunting". I take this to mean as "looking to compete" rather than how everyone is trying to spin it.

Eh maybe he's backtracking a little bit. Everyone made a big deal about the statement and now he has to elaborate, likely after certain deals fell through.

@@crayroot26 Yeah well the whole thing is silly to me. Everyone is searching for the best possible players available constantly. It's obvious that the Jazz would do everything conceivable to obtain a Giannis level player, but if getting high level role players are what's available then you target the guys projecting towards high upside. Which Ainge is the best at doing that.

One thing that gets lost when drafting older players is that they’ve had more time to refine and mature their game, so in theory if you draft a 22 year old you could have a 24 year old guy entering his prime on a rookie deal for two years. I think the value of having fully developed players on rookie deals is hugely undervalued by Locke.

I hope the report about Castle being the ultimate target is just a smokescreen. I don't see his shot getting much better; release is slow and almost never see him swoosh it, and his stance requires a lot of space-- moves are kind of predictable and telegraphed and I don't see him getting away with many blocks on Defense like he did. I do think he's a great defender and has good eyes for seeing the floor given his size, I'm just not convinced that he is a star.

Probably time to trade Lauri, which sucks because i love his game, but he's too good for us to bottom out. If we can get something close to what Brooklyn got for Bridges, then it's worth looking at.

It 100% is. And I hope the announcement that they are going with Lauri is just posturing for trades. Obviously they need to appear committed to get the best trade haul.

Watching Salaun & Cody Williams available at 8 & 9 in all this mock drafts but never at 10 makes me sad all over again that the Jazz fell 2 spots because of the lottery😭

Unless the Jazz can move up my preference is: Carter, Dillingham or as an outlier Zach Edey.

@@zach5381 I love all three players, but Zach Edey would be an interesting pick for the Jazz as he would be able to look Victor Wembanyama in the eyes - instead of having to look up at him. 👀

Murray may be at the same spot as bridges in the top 100, but the value same interest in bridges is a million times higher. I don’t think a team would give the hawks more than 2 picks and a player for C Murray.

I think Ron Holland can be Kobe Bean Bryant. You take a chance on him if he's available at 10. Otherwise, Devin Carter would be nice next to Keyonte George.

I think he’s like $12 million a year and two years left. I don’t think the Knicks can afford to keep him with Mikele Bridges contract. He’s a solid player but our issues are in other areas other than center.

If the Nets can get that for Bridges it’s time to trade Lauri. Let’s go full tank through the 2026 draft and get our Superstars.

College basketball is college basketball. It is a very high level of competition, and anyone who plays on that level is very athletic. Continually hammering home the 5 year age difference makes no sense, especially when you bring in the analogy of HS seniors vs. junior high age to put it in perspective. You have even mentioned it is the same as 8th graders compared to 4th graders in other videos. Heck, you might as well take this absurd talking point even further and say it is like 4th graders competing with kindergarteners on the basketball court. But children in junior high school are just that, children and when all of these 18 year olds were in JH 5 years ago, any small town team of grown men could easily defeat them. We get it. But not every colege basketball team Knecht faced was just 18 year olds, and the 18 year olds who play are still highly atheltic and in adult formed athletic bodies now, so all of this age difference comparison just falls so flat. if you took this farther on the league level, it would be for example, like saying the 2000 draft class should be able to mop the floor with the great 2003 class simply because they were older and more physically developed. Please give that one a rest.

I have to laugh (not mockingly), I know size can be somewhat arbitrary in Basketball, but in the first half of the pod, Lock said Carter was 6'3" and Holland is 6'6", but in the wrap up he said Carter was 6'2" and Holland is 6'8". I have never seen or heard Holland was 6'8" in any pods or publications.

In 50 years, the Utah Jazz have never traded for nor signed a star-level player. They have zero chance of bagging a star player this summer in a trade or free agency. How do I know? I've been a Jazz fan since 1979 and seen them fail time after time. In 1998, the Jazz couldn't even get Rony Seikaly to report for his physical after he was traded to them by the Magic. In exchange for Seikaly, Utah agreed to send Chris Morris, Greg Foster and a first-round draft pick. The trade was later rescinded and Seikaly was traded to the Nets.

Lauri, Conley, Boozer, Okur are all players Utah signed or traded for who are all stars. We considering star level as hall of fame at minimum?

Past experience doesn't guarantee future results. Using that same logic. Utah has never in 50 years successfully tanked for good players either. So, in 50 years, we have neither traded for or tanked for star players.

@@malaw514 Lauri doesn't count because the Jazz didn't know what he would become when they traded for him. Conley never made an All-Star team until he joined the Jazz. Boozer was a good player but didn't become an All-Star until 2007 and 2008 - again, after he joined the Jazz in 2004. Okur, like Markkanen, became an All-Star after the Jazz traded for him - not before. If you go look at Mehmet's 2003-2004 stats with Detroit, you'll find he was a decent player but wasn't a star. In the 2004-2005 season he won the 6th Man of Year award while a member of the Utah Jazz. It was in 2007, that he finally became an All-Star. What I am considering a star player? A player who was an All-Star before the Jazz traded for him - not afterwards.
