On this breaking news episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon delve into the strange scenario surrounding new Utah Jazz NBA draft pick, Kyle Filopowski.
Information surfaced this week that Kyle's fiancé, Caitlin Hutchinson is almost six years his senior and started dating him when he was in high school and she was in her 20s.
Added to this scenario is Kyle's family claiming that he has been groomed into Mormonism by Caitlin and cut off contact with his family two years ago.
Kyle was slated to be in the top 20 NBA draft picks this year but was not chosen until pick number 32 by the Utah Jazz. Insider information says that the coaches were concerned by the allegations of grooming by his fiancé and his estrangement from his family.
Kyle and Caitlin are now headed to Utah so we'll see what happens next!

No wonder the parents are disturbed and no wonder the woman has kept the 19/20 yr old isolated from his family.

Although I totally sympathize with Kyle’s parents feelings, I think it’s a horrible decision of their’s to publicize their feelings. This will only make a possible reconciliation with him at a future date much harder. Generally if a person is forced to choose between a parent or a romantic relationship, the parent almost always loses. And the fact that once something on the internet is permanent, the bad feelings will never be forgotten. Even if this romantic relationship ends at some point the resentment felt by the disparaged parties is forever.

I really don't think so. If she was his baby sitter it's possible that they have known each other, for about the most, thirteen years, starting with him being 7 and her 13. They would have probably gotten to know each other well over the years. Then she went off to college and made something of herself. She didn't sit around waiting for him to save her. As thy matured their friendship probably blossomed naturally over the years. I think that his parents have been obsessed with the money he would bring in. Then he changed course, possibly triggering a family feud. Big money can bring out the worst is some people.

I think the most interesting thing here is the family not saying anything until around the NBA draft. The person who seems angriest about it is his oldest brother who would have been out of the house in college when his younger brother was 13. (Guys in College don't pay attention to little kid brothers) His actual parents describe the rift as only being 2 years old. So likely his senior year max. I think one of the really odd things about this "grooming" thing is he's spending his High School years at private high tuition boarding schools. These are small schools 400 kids. Private campus private prep schools all through high school. She was hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Also for Chris to put this on "Mormon's" instead of this girl/woman is really irresponsible. At least have the guts to point the finger at her and not people with different backgrounds from all over the world. The girl is from Alabama? At least his parents while upset are trying not to exacerbate the situation. The oldest brother however has likely done significant additional damage to everyone and seems far less mature than his younger brother. Duke would have known about the situation and didn't have issues with whatever was going between adults. If you listen to his interviews this guy seems extremely mature for his age. He's a very articulate guy. The NBA doesn't like players with lifestyles where basketball isn't the obsession. He's not going to interview well and being a tall, athletic big with poor showings is plenty of reason to fall. I mean you'd think she'd have a kid by now if that was really the goal. It's got a lot of weird optics and angles for sure but its a big world and at the end of the day only the two of them know what's going on. GLTA

He was supposed to go in the top 15 or 20 picks. Not sure why he dropped so far. His skill set is ideal for the NBA and most NBA draft experts expect him to be at least a role player. He has a little short wingspan, which is the distance from one hand to another with arms straight out from shoulder height. So some scouts think he might be a little short for a center and a little slow to guard some power forwards. This is not a consensus thought among the experts, just with some.

We are a podcast about Mormons, this is why we exist? Would you be addressing us about this if we titled it Groomed by Catholics? Why? Because you aren’t interested in Catholics you are interested in Mormons just like us. We didn’t make this claim, Kyle's parents did and it is clear you didn’t even watch the podcast so maybe you should do that before jumping to conclusions and making comments.

It is very easy to manipulate a young mind, and even easier if it is a hormonal teenage boy. It is the adults responsibility to break up contact, because they should know that it is unhealthy. The brain doesn't fully develope for about 25 years. He is a kid in my eyes and she holds the power position here. Honestly the way I understood it she still grooms him. And if she really loves him, she should've been the adult and not engage in these feelings. I don't know if it is true that she was the familys' babysitter, but I'd be grossed out if it where.

Lol, I'm sorry but this is to funny. I live in Utah and I am a non active Mormon. They have many things that I don't agree with, but mostly this is the typical stereotype stuff that the rest of the country has about Utah and Mormons in general. A lot of people think they are some weird cult or something. Truth is it's just another religion that most people don't understand so that makes them a strange cult. Utah has many religions, were not all Mormons. Sorry to say but some people just need to get over it and themselves. They seem happy! Just leave em alone lol.

I just wonder what your motive was for making this postcast as to explain why you think his draft stock went down or as antimorman message?
@rebeccabibliotheca
@rebeccabibliotheca Ай бұрын
I don’t think this would be seen as an anti-Mormon message? The story is that he was passed on by all the major NBA coaches because of his personal life and there was an element of Mormonism in that. We podcast on anything that has to do with Mormonism that is in the news. The story is everywhere. We gave a fair and balanced treatment of what is happening. I’m guessing there will be more that comes out soon. I’m also wondering if this is sort of the Manti Te’o factor.

Filipowski might have dropped partly because of iffy defense in a rim-running modern NBA, but if these rumors over grooming made him fall further, other teams' qualms are the Jazz's gain. If every NBA player who had been pursued by gold-diggers were ostracized, the NBA would be a lot thinner Looks like Filipowski is not returning the favor to his family who shamed him over this seeming nothingburger. She started pursuing him when he was 17, but he could dump her now if he's not into her. Does the name Karl Malone ring a bell? He hooked up with a teenager, decades ago. A 24-year-old woman pursuing an 18-year-old, pure motives or not, isn't the most extreme out there. Oh and Givony = Give-ah-knee, but whatevs. Might be good to quickly check pronunciation before podcasting. It takes seconds.

SMH! You obviously know nothing about the NBA. Teams will draft by need or best player available. Players fall all of the time. Why did the Jazz draft Collier at 29? He was the best player coming out of high school and should have been drafted in the top 5. Way to make a mount out of a molehill! Except for Bronny James, who a person has or is in a relationship with has nothing to do with why a person is drafted.

That is absolutely not what the episode is about. The episode is about the top NBA coaches who did not choose him because of something they perceived in his personal life that had to do with Mormonism. If you watch the episode you’ll see that we cover it from all angles. It absolutely is not about the age difference. The story is covered in all major newspapers right now and sports outlets. Mormonish Podcast will always report on some thing that is in the headline to this degree that has to do with Mormonism.

@@Net1085 I think back to the Manti Te’o story. I wonder if that made them shy away. The coaches said that he seemed uncomfortable in the interviews when he was talking about the situation and perhaps they were afraid there was drama and wanted to shy away.

Absolutely it affected his draft pick. He was scheduled to go low teens, maybe even higher. He was invited to the green room and only top 10 get invited. He went second round , 32. It is very clear it affected his draft in a negative way. The NBA teams have openly stated they were concerned about him being estranged from his family and the age gap between him and the girl.
