For the LMG in 76, there is a real MG called the MG3 that is produced today that is for all intents is a MG42 in 308. It is used by multiple military units including Germany where it is still made.

An MG3 cannot cycle .308. Belt fed firearms are particularly sensitive to cartridge length and headspace. The difference in .308 vs 7.62x51 may be trivial in most mag fed and manual action guns, but belt-fed weapons cannot substitute one for the other. My Israeli converted 1919 in 7.62NATO won't cycle .308 ammo either, which is were I first learned about this phenomenon.

All weapons use some form of energy, whether muscle, chemical or electrical. Electromagnetic coil and rail guns exist and they're energy weapons in exactly the same way that firearms are energy weapons: they use energy to accelerate projectiles. Usually, "energy weapon" is meant to be short for "directed energy weapon," implying that energy is transferred to the target without any intervening matter. AFAIK, the only real-world weapons that fit this description use lasers.

9:45 I think he meant to say that the barrel reciprocates. The grenade machine gun appears to be recoil operated as many real-world machine guns are. Some of the recoil energy pushes the barrel and bolt backward to cycle the action. The fact that some of the recoil energy is redirected does reduce how much the shooter feels.

Definitely. Technically a full-power rifle ammo like 762 in an MG makes it an MMG (medium machine gun;; for completeness, a HMG (heavy machine gun) is things like 50BMG, but 20mm+ is a cannon), but even I keep mixing up MMG with lower power rifle ammo like 556 the LMG's are.

@@rautamiekka No, light vs. heavy refers to how the gun is used, not the cartridge it fires. Light machine guns move with infantry, while heavy machine guns stay in fixed positions. Examples of light machine guns in WW1 and WWII that used the same full power cartridges as infantry rifles include the Lewis Gun, Chauchat, Bren Gun, and Browning Automatic Rifle. Intermediate cartridge machine guns like the RPD and Minimi weren't developed until after WWII. The Germans innovated by designing a single gun that could be used in light or heavy roles, the MG34. Later, they replaced it with the cheaper MG42. Both designs were universal machine guns, but became light or heavy depending on how they were mounted and used. Here's an MG34 used in the heavy role: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:German_Machine_Gunner_(7527779440).jpg Here's an MG42 configured for a light role: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_146-1983-109-14A,_Frankreich,_MG-Sch%C3%BCtze.jpg

Small nitpick: You say that the Fat Man uses a "hydraulic" system to launch the mini-nukes, but later you go on to say that the yellow canister is full of gas that is used to propel the nukes. "Hydraulic", as the name implies, means that it uses a fluid to actuate the system. So the system is either pneumatic or there's some other engine involved in the propelling of the nukes and the yellow tank is a hydraulic fluid reservoir

I believe the specs in game of 4 say pneumatic. Probably just conflating the two.

While the Fat Man bear little resemblance to the Davy Crocket system of our world, it *does* bear more than a passing resemblance and function to the PIAT launcher. The PIAT, or Projector Infantry AntiTank (don't look at me, the British named this one), could be used up to 115 yards in direct (or straight-on) fire or up to 350 yards in indirect (or arced) fire. It fired via a large plunger that would ram into the rear of the ammunition, setting of a small charge in the back of the mortar and launching it towards the enemy. It had insane recoil, and it was difficult to load, though could be operated by one man. It didn't have a hydraulic tank, but one could definitely be seen as an improvement and natural evolution of the design. Also, as an aside, it isn't pronounced "m k." The abbreviation "mk" when used in a military designation, especially a weapons platform, it's pronounced "mark." So "mk.1" would be "mark one" and so on.

About the nuka cola cans, during World War II, the US halted production on several civilian products that contained metal for the war effort. Paperclips, kitchen utensils, batteries, bobby pins, all kinds of stuff. Could a similar reason be why cans never caught on? Originally, soda cans were made of tin, but switched to aluminum in 1958. It's the right time period, so maybe the cans were still tin, and saw limited production.

As far as the Fat man launcher I'm pretty sure it's not a pressurized, but a spring powered system akin to the British PIAT from WW2. This would also explain why the heavy launch spring starts to misfire at low condition. PIATs were notoriously prone to spring jam, as soon as some of the parts rusted with use.

I believe its possible that multiple countries were working on the idea at the time, its all a matter of stealing designs and production. Its likely that the US's moving of resources to PA development and production. It likely that Chinese spy's found out about the PA and realizing that they couldn't develop their own PA equipment to match the US they instead chose to move towards Gauss tech, which may have been used for their stealth units, only to be captured and revers engineered by the US.

I think it would be cool for future Fallout games to include non-nuclear crafted ammo for the Fat Man. There've got to be plenty of wasteland groups who have a Fat Man somewhere but not enough nukes to feel comfortable using them. And, because of the odd slingshot launch system, it should be pretty easy for a smart wastelander to put together some kind of vanilla explosive or mega-Molotov to chuck out of that thing.

To explain of china design is probably a stolen from the USSR (Russia?) as the US and Soviet Union were competing for the best Rotary Auto cannon which the CCP (Chinses Communist Party) would of bought to make a homegrown variant. Since the Gauss Rifle, was American design it would make sense to tactically acquire a minigun version of it to keep it from being massed produced by the CCP and would be extremally cost inefficient to use. To look as Fat-Man Yellow bottle its a Reservoir Bottle when the player pulls back to reload the bell rings to alert you at full pressure, and that it could be load and transported safely loaded.

I believe the large number of MG-42 look alikes floating around in Appalachia are T-24s. For some clarity the T-24 project started when the DoD realized that the M1919s converted for S.A.W roles were very outdated. The T-24 was an attempt to reverse engineer the MG-42 and rechamber it for .30-06 so it could be shipped out to frontline troops. It never got far after it was turned down due too its ludicrous rate of fire. But the T-24 project did eventually evolve into the M60.

I assume that the appearance of the unique FNV fat man is the actual pre-war version meant to be the final issued version; as the weapon was only in service for a month and is a rarer weapon in the wasteland, making the idea of the "standard" models we see in game being the versions of the weapon's first field functioning design. With the unique version being what would have been the finished and openly adopted field model. Its not unusual for militaries to field a less than completely polished design in a small capacity at first to get the platform in battle quickly, and rotate out for fully realized models as they finish.

There are a few examples in the real world floating around of German MG42’s that were taken as war trophies during WWII that were converted over to running .308/7.62x51mm instead of 7.92 Mauser cartridge as it is cheaper. Additionally a post WWII machine gun called the MG3 chambered for .308/7.62x51mm was produced that looked identical to the previous MG42 So seeing it running around in Fallout 76 in the .308 caliber is not completely out of the norm.

Huh, so hearing that the Fat Man was only fielded a month before the Bombs, I had to wonder if the troops that used it in Op Anchorage were testing prototypes. but then I read a few forums and the prevailing theory, backed by terminal evidence afaik, is that General Chase had them added to the sim later to increase the overall impressiveness of the sim. Which makes sense, since it's 3-in-one: training, entertainment, and propaganda. Very neat, even if that was an oversight during the Fallout 4 Fort Strong lore-writing.
