Last week I made this video on the reworked Crab King fight in the beta of Don’t Starve Together. In the video I made a few suggestions, and it seems like we may have been on the same page with these ideas because…we actually got some of them added to the fight in the beta update this Tuesday. Here is what just changed!

The Staying Afloat Update adds skill trees for Wurt and Winona, reworks the Crab King fight, and adds a slew of quality of life updates to the ocean content of Don't Starve Together. Sunken Chests received new loot tables which include archaic boat kits and surprising seeds. Marrotters are a new mob that have been added to the coastline waters of the mainland, pirate raids have new behavior where they sometimes appear with raidable loot. Also added were kelp boat patches, signs of Powder Monkeys territory on sea stacks, new ocean set pieces, a new Pearl trade and a new Salt Lick made of actual salt!

Genuinely never wouldve thought we'd see the day that crab king would become one of my favorite bosses but... Here we are. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this rework shot CK from hands down my least favorite boss all the way to second place in my eyes. Everything just comes together so nicely, it's well balanced and it opens the door for several strats that also don't feel like they're borderline required if you want to do the fight solo without spending a ludicrous amount of wood on repairs. Hats off, I am genuinely impressed.

The same thing happened with ancient guardian, it turned from the most boring boss fight that was always cheesed to death, to one of the fan favorites. Screw character reworks we needed boss fight reworks all along. 🤪

At the end of the day this is a multiplayer game maybe they can add some water mobs(that can swim like the sea strider) that you can befriend to help with crab guard. This is more of the base game issue that not really help single player but that’s why the pan flute, weatherpain exist.

I think that when crab king use taunt attack all little crabs should not be able to sleep/panicking because of fire that would stop players from puttung 8 purple gems as before

I wish there wasnt so much stuff in the water. After an ice phase i saw my boat was about to break, but i couldn't place a new boat because all the crap in the water blocked off all area to place the boat, so i drowned.

Idk if this bothers someone besides me, but after the ice platform phase, I can't place a new boat because there are so many ice items in the water. A lazy forager may solve this problem. It happened for me once and it was a little bit frustrating.

The only things they need to improve imo, the waves he does should push you a bit more strongly and the bug that happens if he cannot push you away still happens. If he cant push you away either because if minion craming the boat or just putting 2-3 sea trawlers around the boat you can just press F until he dies. An easy fix would be that he launches his old geyser attack if he notices he cannot push you away after a while.

Now that the Crab King has quite a long delay before it starts healing up, I think it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to make the crab guards immune to sleeping. Having them do absolutely nothing throughout the fight and having them sleep, thus transforming the healing phase of KC to just a damage sponge phase kinda sucks.

The guards are usually spread out around the platform and wander around so it’s hard sleeping them all at the same time. The crab knight does have a bit of sleep resistance now and takes multiple pan flute uses to put to sleep. There are still challenges with using sleep during this phase but I’d prefer they keep the option for solo fights. In multiplayer you can have some players focus the ads so it’s less of an issue.

Highly doubt it’ll be a hard requirement, honestly. I’m sure there will be plenty of strats for doing the fight without one, especially if you’re not using purple gems. I like pan flute for solo fighting but in a group you can definitely have other players dealing with the ads.

I still think that pan flute thingy is kinda stupid i mean whats the point of adding cool crab guards if they are dealt exactly the same as the normal crabs so whats the solution? Well have the guards be unsleepable so that you have to fight it before dealing with crab king... But then crab king gets free healing right ? Well they can make it so that weather pains stop his healing for as long as the tornado persists which means you have to shoot a tornado and fight the guard while the tornado is active and manage both the king and the guard... And well in multiplayer one player simply targets the king while another the guard and you can even have more guards spawn with more players

Seems to me like that would be replacing pan flutes with a weather pain requirement. Not sure I’m a fan of that.

@@JazzysGames I personally am there are too many fights that are just "click pan flute to win" so adding another fight like that is kinda lame especially since you don't even have to engage with the crabs in the first place so they kinda feel pointless since you just click once and they are out of the fight The weather pains were always required for crab king anyway so intergrading it to the new fight feels right, it also makes him a bigger threat as you will now have to learn how to fight the crab guards which is perfect since he has always been a mid to late game fight anyway Other than that he is good

@@maaaaaaugh2323 I think Abigail, Bernie, Willow's ethereal ember spells, Maxwell puppets, Catapults on the boat etc. would go a long way here. Things that can draw aggro or deal AoE damage. Weremoose maybe if you're in a duo, but you couldn't do that solo because you can't row while transformed.

Eh, don't forget you can't row while you're in Moose form. If one wave pushes you too far away, you're screwed.

They really have to stop making bossfights leave piles of garbage all over the floor. I've mentioned repeatedly on the forums how bad the framerate gets on a low end system dealing with all the moonglass that CC spawns during its 3rd phase and I see just a stupid amount of ice and meat in the water here. Granted crab king is also stationary and isolated, CC can move around a lot during its first two phases and Don't Starve just isn't built for combat especially the kind where you need to deeply consider in the middle of a high stakes and high energy fight where its third phase starts to minimize fps death.

Sadly the ocean is still utter shit that is WAY too punitive. Tried the bossfight, lost my boat, lost all the fishes and good stuff I had on it, and got literally trapped and stuck on Pearl's island nearby with 0 way out. I am forced to rollback on a MIDGAME BOSS. I am a veteran player who has killed both FW and CC, and Crab King is still way harder than any of them because the consequences for failure are so ridiculously high, and the resource investment is much much much higher. Ocean fights should not be a thing, they are broken by design, they suck, your boat sucks and has 0 hp, it's as fun as doing a full boss run wearing 0 armor in any of the bossfights. It's just awful, you lose everything you have ever had when you lose, and once again it's a MIDGAME BOSS FIGHT, IT SHOULD NOT BE SO FCKING PUNITIVE TO LOSE AT THEM, LOSING YOUR BOAT AND DROWNING IN THE OCEAN IS MUCH MUCH WORSE THAN LITERALLY DYING IN THE FIRST PLACE IN ANY OTHER BOSS FIGHT. It's stupid, it's utterly, ridiculously stupid. No one has ever or will ever beat Crab King without practicing hours in test worlds before or watching guides, because the consequences for failure are so ridiculously high for a boss that is not supposed to be hard in the first place. You should not have to be dependent on a paper boat, you should not lose your stuff at sea, you should not get stuck on some dumb island, you should not have to rollback or reset your world for failing once and not even dying, drowning should not be 20 times more punitive than literally fcking dying.

I’m sorry that these changes have upset you. I’ve had to practice this fight a lot to get the right flow; it’s more practice than I’ve put in with any other boss besides FW. It’s helped me to keep as little stuff on the boat as possible, just in case I drown during the fight. There are still aspects of this fight that you just gotta know to avoid in order to avoid the 1-hit KO’s. It’s unfortunate but at least the fight itself doesn’t cost as many resources to excecute as it used to. If you’re a pro at the other bosses then I’m sure you’ll figure this one out soon.

@@JazzysGames Yeah, I needed to just get that out of my system. The ocean simply has this big issue in many areas, it's supposed to be an early or midgame area depending on where you are, but it's often way more punitive than the surface or the ruins. Dying is way less punishing than drowning, and that's playing Wurt, it's even worse with other characters. And you need backups of backups to be able to move, otherwise you very easily get stuck on an island. For example I got attacked by monkeys, they destroyed my sail, I had 0 way to make an oar, gotta drown myself... I lose the CK fight, get stuck on Pearl's, completely stuck which would mean I'd have to willingly die, resurrect at the effigy, craft another boat and everything, come to the island, get my stuff back, resail to CK, grab my stuff back, get back to mainland, reorganize, and then and only then I could try again... I don't know how Klei should do it, but the ocean needs fixing, it's way too punishing for absolutely no reason, the ocean should never be a more hostile region than the literal ruins.

Glad the fight is improving. But like- ehh. I dunno about it. It feels like too big a deviation from the old fight. Yeah the old fight was it's own demon. But there are people who unironically loved that fight for what it was. And they're just completely left behind by this change. And it's not like the Old CK fight was a bad starting point either. They just needed to give that fight more leeway to make mistakes and it would have been leagues better. Or made it actually interact with new sailing mechanics that where added instead of making CK ignore them entirely. Such as Boat Bumpers being able to protect your boat from getting grabbed instead of being smashed instantly. If I'm being honest, I think it's the fact that Klei saw this sailing-based boss, and decided the best way to improve it would be to make it stop being a sailing boss for 70% of the fight that really bothers me. It just comes off as the coward's way out, y'know?

Can still freeze from wetness which goes way up in this fight. You can use a star but your boat moves around a lot so it’s iffy.

@@JazzysGames I mean, it's not like you have much else to pick from. 6 skills for merm king, 2 for affinity, 4 more for helmet and tool sheds, remaining 3 ether for extra merm spawn, which is redundant, mosquito craft, which is just bad or ignoring wetness. And between the choices, ignoring spring as a season kinda feels the best.
