The container ship that entered Busan's new port was hit by a large crane.
The accident resulted in the destruction of several cranes, which would have hampered port operations for at least a few months.
Reporter Oh Tae-in on the sidewalk:
[reporter]
A containership that slips and approaches the pier.
Suddenly I turn my bow back towards the sea.
At that moment, the back of the ship hits a crane on land.
The crane, who could not overcome the impact, collapsed quickly.
A 150,000-ton ship approached the pier and struck a large crane.
[Accident witness: As the boat came in, there was a small boat, but it seemed to have been avoided. The stern tail hit the crane and collapsed.]
The accident was around 2:50 PM.
The large crane that moved the container from the ship to the ground was so shocking that it crashed down.
In addition, three other cranes in the vicinity were pushed out, and the knight on the crane was taken to the hospital.
[Kil Il-geun / Head of Public Relations Office, Changwon Coast Guard: The crane collapsed when a 150,000 ton container ship that entered the 8th seat in Busan collided with a crane on the ground. Guard ships and rescue boats are placed around the ship. .]
Due to the accident, the operation of the Busan New Port Pier 2 is expected to be disrupted for at least several months, and the damage is expected to reach 10 billion won.
Haekyung is investigating the exact circumstances of accidents against pilots and others on a container ship.

First, the tug at the rear was backing down as hard as possible, second, the ship had no containers aboard, hence very high in the water and less effective rudder and prop “bite”. The ship was travelling too fast, probably a mechanical or electrical failure in the engine room, as the ship closed on the wharf she was answering “full astern” but there was simply far too much momentum and she hit. One theory anyway.

From AIS info I learned that the Vessel came alongside with almost 6 kts. My experience in Busan is that the Pilots are generally going too fast. This is probably what happened, and they expected the vessel could easily stop because it was light. They just did not take the propeller immersion into consideration and the astern maneuvering had only very little effect.

The ship would have had a Busan local port pilot on board, giving commands - as well as the Captain. It might appear as though it was in forward propulsion.... but I’m not sure, because the prop doesn’t change rotation and the ship eventually stops. And it’s unloaded and riding high, so the “paddle-wheel” or prop-walk effect of the prop appears to be pulling the stern to port to an exceptional extent. Also it seems to be going slow astern initially (at 0:48, little froth, no smoke from stack) then about 20 secs later at 1:07 ramps up to full astern as quickly as it can (lots of froth, lots of smoke) all the time turning hard to stbd.... i.e. trying to stop. But that increases the paddle-wheel effect too. Conclusion: the pilot/captain thought the astern main engine action would stop the ship, but as it was high in the water the propeller had much reduced grab and also threw the stern to port - and failed to stop the vessel in time while rotating the vessel into the wharf. Operator error?

@@Container_World I also have one question... " Did I see that correct that the tug boat connected to the stern had to detach, was detached? Just before crashing in to the jetty? Because that might confirm the above " explination " as some force pulls the stern all the way to port the tug boat is unable to correct and for own safety must let go... I havent seen thug vessels do this too often in my career, on the bridge and pilots. Clearly this was not the current responsable.

Whomever was in charge of the bridge has some explaining to do regarding the vessel's speed, proximity to the dock and the manoeuvre that brought the stern into contact with the crane. There should have been a set procedure to cover everything that vessel did right up till it hit open water, specifically to eliminate the possibility of such horrific accidents. The material damage and financial costs are irrelevant as they will be covered by underwriters, but it is human safety that matters above all else, and I hope that no one was injured by this wholly avoidable accident.

@Brendo 111 Sadly and unfortunately, you have a point! When one of their bullet trains derailed, they immediately dug a hole and buried the wreckage where it lay! No accident investigation, no examination of any components or systems, just bury the wreck to avoid bad publicity to their super train service. I couldn't believe they were only concerned about getting the wreck out of public view, as opposed to determining the actual cause of the derailment.

This is one of those videos that is going to be on the training films forever, one of those 'Don't do what Donny Don't does'... What a screw up. (No pun intended). I remember watching vids of monumental F-ups during safety meetings when I was in construction... I liked to share them when I eventually was leading the meetings, too: people laughed until they realized that they just saw one mistake drop maybe $100,000,000+ (I meant that one/pun). In all seriousness, how many careers do you think this ended? (and/or lives? This is why we train. Ugh.) Thanks for posting, though.

Why is there no prop wash or wake from the tug, although it should be pulling with all its might to prevent the ship from running into the pier? Why is it being dragged sideways? Engine failure, that made it impossible to stop the ship before it hit the pier? The ship isn't really moving as fast as you might think from watching the first part of the video. It's been sped up, and if you count the time it takes each container section (2 TEU long plus a couple of feet) to pass the stern of the ship to the right, you will end up with a speed of maybe 20 knots. But the ship leaves almost no wake, and the tug that's being dragged don't capsize, so it's obvious that it doesn't move that fast. And if you compare the time it takes the crane to collapse the first part runs about four times faster than the second.

Why would they make a turn like that? Would'nt it be better if they hit the Quay lateral?

It hit several cranes, but destroyed only one. You can see this in the first part of the video if you know what to look for.

Design flaws on the ship. Its hard when u have a bridge at forward part of the ship. Its hard to see the aft section. It is still better the old times when ship had their bridge midship part and aft section.
