Schluter Ditra is installed on the plywood sub floor with a polymer modified thinset, using an 11/64" square notched trowel. First the plywood is dampened with a sponge and water, then the flat side of the Ditra trowel is used to spread the thinset onto the ply wood to key it in, then the notched side of the trowel is used. The Ditra is then placed on the thinset and smoothed with a wooden trowel. The tile is then set on the ditra using a ½" square notched trowel. All the tiles are back buttered before setting the tile into the combed thinset on the ditra. Finally the tile is grouted. Mr. DiBlasi, thank you for your time and effort to show us your techniques. Do you recommend a sponge-wipe of the plywood before I used a self-leveling compound on the floor (prior to using the DITRA decouple membrane)? The self-leveler might also benefit from not having its moisture all sucked in by the wood. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

Hey Sal,doing a bathroom floor for a friend. 12x12 porcelain tile over Ditra. Is it ok to place the tile over existing hardiebacker? He doesn’t want to remove it and start over. Was gonna use some a set to relieve a few low spots before putting down the dirt.thanks for any help! Really appreciate the time you put into these videos!

No, remove the backer board or don't install the ditra. I don't let people tell me how to install tile, if it goes bad they will point the finger at you, doesn't matter what the friend said.

It’s a lot easier installing tile and lining up all the joints. 1/3 offset 12x24s are a pain. Some of those cheaper tiles can look as bowed as potato chips.
