The nibbler makes me a little nervous sometimes, especially on certain tile. I like to make a few cuts to the line and then shift it side to side to break them loose while also making the edge nice and clean, I'll lift the tile at the same time keeping the back down and square, to square the cut best i can. I know, not always necessary with grout/ grout caulk.

How often do you run across tiles that vary in size? I mean same exact box of tile but they were slightly different in size, we ran a column stacked layout with these 12”x24” tiles and some were 1/32”- almost 1/8” different in size. I’ve had this happen before with mis matched dye lots but never in the same box of tile. The customer bought the tile from the orange store. I have never seen that before and it made my layout look rough I couldn’t figure out why my joints weren’t lining up perfectly three rows in until I measured the individual tiles. Is this something you’ve seen before?
@SalDiBlasiКүн бұрын
Seen it many times with cheap tiles, higher grade tiles usually are calibrated much better and have less variations in size.
@2yz4u5823 сағат бұрын
@@SalDiBlasi so this is not an uncommon situation, I need to make sure customers are aware of that before they purchase their tile, I typically suggest purchasing direct from the vendor bedrosians, Emser, Dal-tile those are my go to vendors.

This is great information. Super nice of this tile expert to help the homeowner know exactly what should have been done. Craftsmanship is a diminishing form. Anyone with pride in their work and a desire for their work to still be in place for many, many years will learn the craft to the level of detail this gentlemen knows. Super nice of him to mark and leave the book for reference. After hundreds of years, tile work and detailed Mosaics are still in place because the Tilesetters were true craftspeople.

Is the time really worth it? Why not just get prefabricated niche?
@hereticxxx93174 күн бұрын
The reason I make niches is to fit into a layout that reflects the size tile and grout line being used. This saves time in the end. Niche sizes are limited as well.
@hereticxxx93174 күн бұрын
Pre fab sizes are limited and often times need to be modified for different sizes. Learning to do this saves a lot of time and allows you to make sizes that fit into a tile layout perfectly., saving time in the end.
@jakegarcia61434 күн бұрын
he can build this to fit directly into the rows at the exact size he needs. and he doesnt need to spend 100$ to do it. it takes maybe 20 min to build and set

Hey Sal. Getting back to your videos as a refresher for myself as I take on another tile floor home project. I wanted to ask you if you like spreading thinset with a float on top of Ditra XL ? For example I spread ALLSet thinset on the wood subfloor and roll out the DitraXL then press down the Ditra with a wooden flat float tool. I like to then take ALLSet that is left over and rubber float over the ditra holes and let it harden. It creates more of a flat surface for the next step of spreading out thinset for tile and buttering. The tiling is the hard part and I think filling it in ahead makes it a little easier on the large tile step. Do you do this ... hoping for your thoughts.
@SalDiBlasi5 күн бұрын
Not usually, I will use up left over thinset, but I feel it is pointless to add an extra step by filling all the ditra letting it dry and then spreading it again to set the tile. I do however know many tile guys that like to pre fill.

Would like to see the next step where you install the linear drain and how you adhere it to the floor (I'm assuming with a fabric).

What about just putting wonder board over the whole job or sanding the stone, then do it right with proper measured pieces, etc., over the whole job? If there's structural issues, they could use plywood first, or metal lathe on top, then use a floor levelling mortar, after everything has been shimmed, leveled, etc., then add "redgard", or any waterproofing membrane, then add adhesive or mortar, then the stone, grout, sealer, as per drying times.

Floor was a total loss kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opZ0gsecndfPc2g.html
@ericastier16466 күн бұрын
That first looks smart but then becomes questionable. Leveling the tile flush with the hardwood floor that way you are forcing the thickness of the thinset to a different thickness the notched trowel will make it. I mean that notch that you dug with the oscillating tool will force the bottom of the tile to a certain height above the ditra membrane and that height won't match the height of the thinset from the trowel notches. Sure you can make a sloped thinset but that becomes tricky and now your last tile is sloped plus it can cause thinset coverage issue as the notch is no longer controlling. I don't see how this can be recommended.
@SalDiBlasi5 күн бұрын
You are over thinking it, leveling systems are for very small adjustments, to "Tweak" the tile height. The tile without the leveling system at the hardwood is very close to even. The leveling system just makes that last little adjustment.
@ericastier16465 күн бұрын
@@SalDiBlasi Ok, fair answer Sal, i take it. Since i got your attention, I ran into problem installing a membrane 3 days ago. I did everything as per your videos on installing membrane, right trowel notches, right thinset mixed to be "soupy" per ratio on the bag for membrane and following your video. 22 sq ft small bath. I checked the subfloor with a bubble level, it was reasonably level although not perfect but the bubble never got outside its lines. I thought i did good but next day i found the membrane has two high points. It's not too bad but enough to rock the level back and forth if placed right on high spot. I know you probably say tear everything down but I am not willing to do that despite the possible consequences. Besides i think it would be a nightmare to remove dried thinset and i don't have equipment for that. I will install LFT 15 x 30 , 10 millimeter thick porcelain. I will use a 1/3 x 3/8 trowel for that. I am not certain what went wrong with the membrane install. Possible i pulled and lifted the membrane too many times when i realized coverage was insufficient on the edge of the membrane. it was a difficult L cut around the vanity because of that it resisted pulling, it was already a few minutes after setting it. Also when i used a big light tapping wood block to collapse the grooves under the membrane and probably pressed two hard with half my body weight in my arms that could have moved the fresh thinset under the membrane. Don't know. I dry layout the tiles and, it looks ok, no lippage due to the two high spots. I haven't installed the tiles yet.

You don't mesh tape/thin set the niche?
@SalDiBlasi5 күн бұрын
The waterproofing is also a crack isolation membrane and the fabric also adds strength.
@roachtv9954 күн бұрын
@@SalDiBlasi I was going to waterproof a niche with just hydroban membrane banding, sheet, corners. The rest of the CBU would get just mesh tape and hydroban liquid, but I'm going to skip out on the mesh tape inside the niche as it just seems silly and possible be detrimental to the sheets themselves.
