Todd Helton struck out on three pitches against him one time, and on the way back to the dugout he passed by Larry Walker in the on deck circle and Walker asked him if he saw any of those. Helton answered "I think I heard one".

As a no-talent amateur scrub I've faced some gas passers, (80-90mph) and once in a while I would face a pitcher whose fastball absolutely had that gnarly hissing sound. If you're clearly overmatched you can only hope to work a walk out each AB. Maybe don't swing until you got 2 strikes. I'm not saying give up, I'm saying be smart about how you're gonna get schooled!!! :-)

When Randy Johnson had his A game, it was a scary feeling as a hitter. Almost all his pitches looked the same until they were about 75% of the way to the plate. People always talk about his speed but Johnson at his best was an even better control pitcher. The fact he could throw a 93 mph breaking ball and a 100+ fast ball was simply unfair. It meant you had to close your eyes, swing and hope to get lucky just to make contact. Forget scoring a "hit".

I was at this game at Chase Field when Johnson struck out his 20. What amazes me the most about him, I was watching him develop in the Montreal Expos farm team in Jacksonville, Florida...and he was so wild and all over the backstop. It was insane watching him pitch. That was 1987. Now seeing him like this was a complete 180-degree turn for him; the control, speed, and dominance. I don't know to credit for how he got that control down so well, so pinpoint...this man will always be the "Big Unit" and nothing else but.

We sure missed him here in Seattle after he was gone, but I'm so glad he had so much incredible success afterward. A World Series ring, tying the strikeout record, a perfect game. Just phenomenal stuff. It always depresses me that the Mariners could never get a ring for some of the stars on their roster. Can't blame those stars for leaving after a while.

I was so disgusted at Seattle already over trading away so many great players who would go to other teams and then win a series. Then when Randy got traded, they said he sandbagged his last game! That really made me mad because he was waaaay too much of a competitor to do that. Then we moved to Phoenix in the 1st year of the Diamond backs. Next year, Randy came over from Houston. OH MAN, was I ever a happy camper! I was there when he struck out 20 and watched them beat the hated Yankees in the world series!!!! I was so happy for the Big UNIT.

It was amazing watching him when I was growing up. It was a privilege to see him pitch in person. You think those sliders look nasty on the TV? Man, in person you would have thought the ball had eyes! I've been a baseball fan 20 years and have never seen a pitcher like him. I don't think we'll see another quite like Big Unit. His pitching was clean and nasty. Most of his pitches looked the same until it was too late! (especially that absolutely nasty slider he wailed on batters with). I may be a biased Diamondbacks fan from the very beginning, but I think Randy Johnson is alongside Nolan Ryan as the best pitcher of all the time. Not just because of his pure speed, but his skill and the fact that he played clean amongst a lot of people who did not. Quiet Greatness.

Haven't watched baseball in the last 10 years or so but from the pitchers that I watched, here's my starters rotation : 1- Greg Maddux 2- Randy Johnson 3- Roger Clemens 4- Pedro Martinez 5- Tom Glavine

Even crazier is that he wasn't the winning pitcher of the game!?! I was curious why he was so fired up after the 20th, but yet was walking to the dugout. D-backs won this game in the 11th inning. Man I wish baseball was happening right now.
