true, this parasocial relationship thing that many youtubers are doing is despicable. A month ago a couple of youtubers in italy that fell off made the same thing, they put their next videos behind a 13 euros paywall, and they made a video exactly like this saying the exact same things. web2 platform capture makes it nearly impossible for independent creators... nobody wants to jump through hoops to watch something especially an individual source, charging $6/month ideally, they need to find an integrative platform that combines several creators, and prices each individual episode at the cost advertisers were paying for each view... which i'm guessing is pennies per view (considering Facebook claimed they only made $5/month per user each month, with probably hundreds to thousands of ADs viewed) web3 seems like the only viable solution, as it's capable of all of the above... unless a web2 platform enables micropayments by allowing users to top off their wallets in larger payments, and allow creators to set video pricing but i doubt that will happen, as the control over people's viewing is basically the covert product, so they can slowly drive agendas to control the overall culture, and collect psychological data profiles creators are just assets... and i doubt any web2 competitors would make any money in an already financially captured market

It is wild they have 25 regular employees, and that is somehow not enough and they still need freelancers. Either they have a bunch of people not doing their job or in the wrong job, or they need to scale back on the production enough that the employees can keep up with the work without needing freelancers to pick up the slack. Considering they had I think 17 people credited on their goodbye video alone, I'm guessing they have way too many people pretending to do a job or barely doing anything.

My thoughts about most youtubers are like this: “Sure I like your content, but I don’t like it THAT much to the point where I’d pay for a service to watch you only. I watch hundreds of channels of all different content formats and genres, so I won’t really be missing you.” Probably only 5% or less of a KZfaqr’s audience are actually big enough fans that they would actually pay for a separate service to watch exclusively their content. They’re probably screwed, or they have to downscale or change their format.

This has been a growing trend now with lots of popular KZfaqrs. It’s like they’re never satisfied with where they are or what they have. Some of us have been struggling for ages on KZfaq, and would like nothing more than just a few thousand subs so we have an audience to share our work with. Meanwhile these dude sit here with a massive fanbase and 12k patreons and they behave like this. It upsets people because they’re so blind to the fact they could have almost nothing like the rest of us, and it makes it feel like they’re not really in it for the joy of making content, it’s just about business. What they’re basically saying is “we live richer lifestyles now because of our success, and we can’t keep living like that because things on KZfaq have changed. So please pay us now.” I hardly have 2k subs, but I keep creating because it’s what I love to do. The arrogance is honestly shocking. Learn to appreciate what you have, especially if you have a lot.

I find it fascinating how so many people are surprised that they've never heard about these guys. Or saying how they can't be that important, since I've never heard of them. KZfaq is so massive, that you'd have dedicate your life to watching and studying it to know even 10% of the top channels (meaning those that have over (1 million subscribers) I bet none of us are watching even 0,5% of those creators.

You are 100% correct. I would also speculate that a majority of Asmond's viewers focus their lives around video games, and probably watch exclusively 80%+ video game content. That narrow world view doesn't lend itself to something with a scope as large as youtube.

Some KZfaqrs really forget that people watch KZfaq channels because it’s free to access. People pay for premium because of the massive scale of content they watch on a monthly basis makes it worthwhile to them. £6 a month for 1 KZfaq channel is just not worth it to the vast majority, particularly when that content was already free.

I think part of the reason why they want to do their own thing and why I think it's not likely for them to partner up with another big entity is because they're afraid of being meddled with creatively. They've said it themselves, it's hard to strike a balance with what they want and what the advertisers want here on KZfaq. And also considering that they came from Buzzfeed, which probably also had control over what they were putting out before in stuff like Buzzfeed Unsolved, etc., I think the notion of having their own platform where no one would interfere got them into something like a sugar rush but with creative freedom instead of sugar. And I think this may also be why the tone is off and I find this whole message to the audience sounding insincere. They tell the audience it's for the people who watch them, but it might really just be about what they want. I agree that they really should've just stated their intentions outright and not tried to emotionally appeal to their audience.

The funniest thing about it is that almost no one cares what Steven Lim does. His videos make a 3rd of the views of Shane and Ryan’s. Edit: Ill add that they deeply misunderstood their audience. Almost like they thought they were idiots. We know you have about 18 employees you dont need and we know you hired them because theyre your friends. We SEE Steven flashing his Tesla and extremely expensive meals. Also their viewers are mostly broke college students and highschoolers. They have no money to fucking pay yet another sub. I can actually afford 6USD a month, its no problem for me at all. Im just not willing to pay for 8 episodes a year from the only show that I like. Im going to pay once when the entire show is out, binge it and then unsub. Im not the only person that is going to do this so how is it even a sustainable business decision?

IMO, the biggest problem for them initially is that they were taking content away from people. No one likes stuff being taken away from them. It’s one thing to keep some content free and then make more content behind a paywall, but it’s an entirely different thing to take away content from your audience and say “if you want it back, you have to pay us”. Almost all content creation organizations that I’m aware of have never said “bye to KZfaq”. They all kept producing the same content on KZfaq then additional content behind a paywall.

I once started doing "well" for myself I had a stable job I was finishing community college and that was going to boost my earnings a bit so I started looking into starting a business..... that was the biggest reality check I've ever had I didn't know it was THAT expensive. Friend of mine went to business school basically said to me you gotta plan out to straight up only lose money the first year you're not making a single cent, then maybe after that if you're lucky you can start earning some. My gf at the time had dabbled in e-bay like selling she though she was the shit "we could just rent a spot at the mall and start selling shit" she said. She called a small mall in our area to ask for the rent on a strip and all the costs sent her on a depressive episode that lasted a month. It's not for the faint of heart and unless you're rich you're going into debt when you start a business 100%

17:14 I have thought about it from the business perspective when things like this happen, but that is a good point. It is ultimately the responsibility of said business to keep the customers there. No customer is, or should be, responsible for receiving, or creating, a product which they desire. that is the sole purpose of business as a concept, from the consumer perspective. and so when the consumers are unhappy, it is always the fault of the business in question. It doesn't matter what problems they are having, it is ultimately their responsibility.

One of the big problems with up incoming youtubers is "clout chasing". You might get good traction at first, but not having an identity to your brand will cause your creativity to lose altitude. Thats why i recommend making videos that best express you, and your interests. KZfaq in general is a 10 year journey. Its hard to commit to something for 10 years which is why many channels fizzle out. Creativity is the seed and youtube is the garden, it all depends on how often you tend your channel.
