Lara is everything that artists should aspire to be; She's so technically proficient that it's second nature and she just has to focus on message and emotion. The story just flows out of her.

In my view.. no-one has done a better Caruso - maybe never will! Not just in each note but every breath and pause between. Just the quality , the skill, the nuance, the storytelling... Her total presence within each moment engages the audience at the same intensity. As you point out, this is not just a genetic vocal gift but the product of enormous amount of commitment to training, skill development and daily practice! This is why so many professional singers regard each and every one of Lara's performances a master class. Simply wonderful.

I agree with you totally that this is the best cover ever after having heard top male opera singers singing this song. No one can come close based on the vocals alone; if you add the emotions expressed through body language and facial and eyes expressions, she nailed every detail in a true masterpiece of all times.

Growing up, first born to Italian immigrant parents, this song was part of my "growing up". One of my most favorite songs ever. I've listened to all the greats sing it and sing it well they did. But this rendition brings me to tears almost every time. Lara is simply one of the best singers EVER to grace this planet.

this is, for me anyway, by far the best and most comprehensive and concise reaction/critique of this performance by Lara Fabian. I am a fan of hers and your explanations of the performance piece by piece helps me to understand WHY I am such a fan. Thank you so very much for your efforts on this and many others if yours which i have gone back to watch. I believe Lara is the "ultimate artist" who paints with her warm tones, breath control, seemingly effortless pitch perfection, and her emotions a picture in my mind of the story the composer intended to portray. I am so taken by her unique ability to invite each listener individually to join with her on the journey into that story. Lara Fabian is a treasure.

OMG!!! You are one of the best. Lara is the best. She kills this. I am a Pav devotee lover for my whole life, I have heard every rendition of this song by many many artists, it seems like, of this great song...and Lara just plain owns it. Not sure there is any better performance artist than Lara ever. Thank you thank you.

I love her version. Her sensitivity to the emotion of the song is unparalleled. As you said, she makes it personal, and the meaning of the story becomes so raw, I can't help crying. P.S. I appreciate the link with better audio quality that another commenter provided, but absent the audio comparison, your listeners wouldn't find anything lacking. This version does the job as well. 😉

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this in 1986 while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life. curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

I don't have time to watch your streams live these days, but always look forward to see the reactions you upload. I think you really get at the heart of what makes world class contemporary vocalists stand out here: It's the ability to interpret and then convey the story and emotional content of songs without being restricted by technique, genre, style, or letting anything else get in the way of telling that story and conveying that emotion. It requires vulnerability, sensitivity, humility, and dedication to develop the ability to interpret songs and then to be able to perform them in ways that are able to effectively convey that interpretation to others using whatever vocal techniques required.

Lara is the best. This song has been covered so many times, but she makes you feel it. There’s a movie about Caruso’ s life , played by Mario Lanza , who is a great opera singer in his own right. Worth watching.

I really appreciated this reaction. I got a lot from your exposition on the song itself. "The epitome of phonation" what a great description. So many people have commented on her singing being "conversational" and they're right, but going that one step further and saying that she's not really singing, she's just "the epitome of phonation" is so good. There's a lot to unpack in that statement. I've commented in other reactions to Caruso that I really don't like it. I've heard many singers sing it and it just, I don't know, irritates me. Maybe it's partly to do with the repetition in the melody and chorus? I don't know. But I "made" myself listen to Lara singing it. She somehow managed to find that connection for me. Maybe it was, like you said, the held back emotion rather than the forceful belting that most singers use in the chorus? It doesn't really matter. I will listen to her sing this anytime. She is magic.

You have explained what is going on in her voice more thoroughly and informatively than any other reactor I have listened to. Bravo! All I know is that I used to get rapturous over a few seconds at most from other singers (and very few of them) when the resonance they achieved produced that bell-like ring and then I discovered Lara Fabien who produces mass quantities of that shimmering, ravishing, miraculous sound. I know of no other singer who even comes close to doing that. For me she stands alone in a class by herself, and your commentary would seem to indicate you think so too. Thank you.

At first great reaction from an real expert. I enjoy your comments. Not too difficult for a non native english speaker. Lara ist an excellent singer. Like few other ladys. What makes her special ist the emotional side. While performing she becomes the unique emotions of the song completely. Her mimik, body moves, singing, breathing... And then she gives it all to the audience. A complete sensual experience.

i am not a singer for a reason - I sound terrible ........ in fact I wear ear plugs in the shower in case iI break out in song. Lara Fabian IS MORE than a singer - she is a vocal artist and, for me anyway, maybe the ULTIMATE ARTIST. She paints with her voice, her emotions, her breath control a story and invites her audience to join her on the journey of discovery into that story. Listening to her is a joy which remains with you, always

Nice reaction...I've subscribed to see more reactions to Lara! From my understanding, this is about Caruso on his deathbed despairing because he's about to die and will never see his love again. Caruso was with a much younger woman who I believe he was mentoring. I think they may actually have children together! Lara's performance expresses that pain and angst...so breathtaking and sad

Please forgive me but I can't handle the english language very well. However Caruso Is a a song of Lucio Dalla an italian artist. There is a story behind this Song. One day Lucio Dalla broke is boat in front of Gulf of Sorrento. I Asked a friend for help and the friend was the owner of the hotel (Grand Hotel Excelsior Victoria) where Caruso (famous tenor of the past) died. The friend gave to Lucio the Caruso's room. At the same time chance willed that the barman of the restaurant "La Scogliera" tale to Lucio Dalla that Caruso had fallen in love with an unrequited love for a young girl to which he gave singing lessons. Shortly after, Caruso died. In his room Lucio found the piano that belonged to Caruso and inspired by this story began to play a few notes. A little later the song was ready.

You should definitely check out the original by Lucio Dalla, sung by him. Nobody really ever mentions it, because Pavarotti sang it and he gets overshadowed but Lucio Dalla was an immense singer in his own right. His performances were unmatched IMO

It can't be taken for granted that this song is about a 48 year old man who knows he's dying (of peritonitis, or a form of blood poisoning.), who has finally found love, and is trying to say goodbye, while accepting his fate. He was no longer a strong, youthful master tenor. Also, Lara is telling this song from the perspective of the girlfriend, which is a different POV as well

Worth contemplating: How she can sing different songs in different languages and not miss a beat? I recall my mother struggling with a number of Charles Aznavour's songs (he wrote 800 songs in his lifetime.) One has to find the right poetic words that will scan with the phrasing.. Now, with all that said, Lara Fabian's "Caruso" is absolutely gorgeous !

Honestly; I first wanted to sanction you for the quality of the audio, but finally I watched to the end and will sanction you with a "well done, love your reaction" :) Let me explain :D I'm born 1966 so a 70's/early 80'q teenager and since ever forged into rock/metal. In the 80's we really didn't care about those 80's pop singers - we got wiser and no are listening (ok not all of us) too song singers :) I re-discovered Lara a couple of years ago, and honestly.... was wasting some years being not enough open minded (well I was, I also loved BJH but unable to reveil this to a buddy lol)
