In this video, I show you how I replace a drive axle (CV axle) on a 1999 Honda Accord with a V6 engine (J-series). This procedure should be similar for 1998-2002 models with a V6 engine. The exact vehicle in this video is a 1999 Honda Accord EX V6 Sedan.

Great Video Man!! I succesfully replaced my old CV Axle. (One word of caution though. Buy the correct breaker bar or impact for the spindle nut, they are notorious for being hard to remove. broke a 2 foot 1/2" drive breaker bar using a 3 foot pipe. A 3/4" 2' Breaker bar with a billy club attached to it removed it for me. And then theres the castle nut, was impossible to get undone had to get a friend to pry the thing up so I could hammer it and come loose. took hours dealing with these two bolts. other than that everything went great and smoothly.

I fixed the vehicle in this video with an aftermarket part. The cost difference was huge, I think it was something like $60 vs $450 or something like that. The owner has had no issues with the aftermarket one. When vehicles get this old I don't mind going aftermarket for stuff like this and most auto parts stores will give a lifetime warranty. And of course, fix it after coffee! lol

Dave just some info you might want to hear a followup on my 99 Honda Accord EXL. Wife was complaining of hearing brake issues on the left side after replacement. I think I found the problem. Upon taking the brake caliper off to check the brakes I found that when the CV joint slung the grease it coated the rotor and caliper and the inside of the rim. Took everything apart and cleaned but im hoping the grease didn't impregnate the pads as they are in good shape. Fingers crossed wonder if you ever came across this problem? Just sending out some info. Artie

What was the actual problem that needed the replacement. I have a 2000 Acura tl that when I drive the whole car shakes and I noticed that this same axle when I raise it up and move it from side to side it has play. Can this be the case or a need for replacement. Any help from anyone is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!
@BigDog50001

This drive axle was replaced due to the boot being broken open. It is possible that the drive axle is causing vibrations but there will be some play in the axle due to the nature of how they are designed.

@@BigDog50001 I popped in a new after market driver side and noticed it wasn't as flushed as the original. So I removed it and compared it to the old one closer this time. The new axle spline is 1/16 of an inch longer (at the part where it goes into the transmission) than original. Not sure if this will be a problem. Will ATF leak or air get in there? I don't know. Guess I'll call around and do more research for now...

Please help me, my accord 2006 A/T the left front tire fell apart from the upper ball joint, now it’s really hard to move the knuckle in order to align it with the ball joint, I can feel the axle is shot inside, when i go through parking, reverse and drive it feels like the transmission is kicking and the axle moved itself forward, that’s why is really hard to align the knuckle with the upper ball joint. could be this the transmission or axle? Thank you

It's hard to say what was damaged, but I suspect some damage was done. If the axle looks bad, it is the cheapest and easiest to replace so you could always start there.

Do you really have to drain the transmission?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on which side is being done, some vehicles have an intermediate shaft in between Drive Axle and transmission like in this video, so on those it is not necessary. On others it is a good idea to drain ATF and then refill after job is done, if not done it isn't the end of the world, there will probably just be fluid leaking out during replacement and that fluid will need to be replaced when done.
