In this video, I conduct a detailed comparison of the 7mm PRC and 300 Winchester Magnum cartridges.
On one hand, no list of big game hunting cartridges is complete without the 300 Winchester Magnum and it consistently ranks among the most popular calibers used for hunting all manner of medium and big game.
This is for a good reason: the 300 Win Mag has developed a sterling reputation afield across the whole spectrum of game in the 60+ years the cartridge has been in use.
On the other hand, the brand new 7mm Precision Rifle Cartridge has taken the hunting world by storm since coming on the scene in 2023.
I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve never seen a cartridge make as big of a splash as the 7mm PRC did when it was introduced by Hornady. Even though it’s still very new, the 7mm PRC has also quickly developed a great reputation as an accurate and effective big game hunting round.
With those things in mind, it’s not surprising that many hunters looking for a new hunting rifle are considering the 300 Winchester Magnum and the 7mm Precision Rifle Cartridge.
Both offer certain advantages to hunters and there is a big overlap in their capabilities, but there are some important differences between the 7mm PRC vs 300 Win Mag cartridges you should keep in mind.
For that reason, I investigate the 7mm PRC vs 300 Win Mag debate in detail and provide some insight into which new rifle cartridge is ideally suited for various hunting situations so you can make an informed decision on which one will work best for your individual needs.

I got my first 300 WM last year in a Bergara B14 wilderness ridge. I bought it hoping to go on an elk hunt. Have not gotten to go after elk yet, but did get drawn for a Texas mule deer last December and was able to take a nice buck. I am shooting hand loaded Hornady 200 grain eld-x.

@derekmcmurry4263 I don't doubt what you are saying,,,,But will we ever see factory Saami approved ammunition on the shelf for this Wildcat Custom cartridge 270-7PRC? Also will we ever see Factory chambered rifles in this cartridge from "numerous" Rifle makers or will it always just be a "Custom chambered Wildcat" rifle that you can only get from a Custom rifle builder?

YES there is. If you RELOAD the belt WILL cause you headaches after a few firings in SAAMI spec chambers. The beltless PRCs will not.. Also, the PRC rounds are designed with the correct amount of headspace in the magazine so the user can load LONG high BC bullets and are not tied to only vertsin actions which can use 3.6" plus mag boxes.

Hi John When you look at the good old 30-06 , it mightn't have all the impressive figures of these modern " Hot Rod " cartridges, but when it comes to a reliable calibre for " Meat for the pot " in Africa , & when the unexpected opportunity to take a shot at a bigger animal comes along, with good shot placement it's a time proven cartridge . Good video, l enjoyed it .

The 7mm PRC is a really interesting and positive development and, if I were younger, I'd probably get one. But I've spent a lot of time developing a round for my 300wm which I've hunted in many places with. It's never let me down. 180g Barnes. Killed plains game, chamois, wild boar and several species of deer. If a second shot was ever required then it's always been my fault. Fantastic cartridge. But - that doesn't mean the 7mm PRC isn't also great.

Fully agree with your statements on the ELD-X. With the grain weights in the Precision Hunter I believe Hornady for better or worse optimized for the long range market positioning. At more common ranges like 100-300 yards a heavier bullet would have made more sense. So the 220 ELD-X for the 300 WM and the 200 ELD-X for the 30-06 (which I handload). For a do it all I believe the 190 AccuBond Long Range is the better choice.

I have had two 7 PRC rifles with 24” barrels and never broke 3000 fps in either with 175s. About 2950 is what you can expect with a 175 grain bullet from a 24 so a 20 would be somewhere around 2750-2800. Now, the 6.8 Western gives me 3034 with a 170 Berger from a 24”. That’s actually a more efficient cartridge.

I've had a 300WM in a Ruger No 1B before and loved it.I was shooting 200gr Partitions at an honest 3050fps with no pressure signs.Yes,that was a max lod,but a safe load.I used it to kill an elk and it did just fine, and I shot the elk under 100yds.My brother also used the same load in his Browning A Bolt and shot his bull at 250yds and dropped it in it's tracks, pretty much. The elk rolled down hill about 20yds. Though the recoil is a little on the stout side, the A Bolt is the only gun I've been scope kissed by,it is very manageable if you practice. When I shot my elk,I didn't even notice the recoil,as is the case pretty much with all shots at game.I can't claim vast experience like you and many other people though.I have thought about buying a light magnum to replace that 300 and have considered the 6.8 Western and the 7PRC.Here I actually like the 6.8 better,on paper. It virtually gives up nothing to the PRC,the only problem is that nobody is really supporting it the way they have the PRC. This is due to Winchester not releasing it to the industry the way Hornady has.Marketing, marketing, marketing, that is the true issue.Great video and keep up the good work.

@Thebiggamehuntingblog for the distance I typically hunt, the 300 Win Mag is the obvious choice, but because I do shoot out to 400 yards and sometimes further, I appreciate the lighter recoil, better retained energy at extended ranges, greater confidence in my shot placement at longer distances, and the fact that it will still get the job done very well at typical hunting distances, the choice for me is essy... the 7mm PRC.

I first bought a 300 win mag back in the 1980s Winchester model 70 lite. $372 that thing kicked real hard after 20 shots there was bruising lol. Recently I bought a Browning X-Bolt Hells Canyon Speed .300 win mag 26 in barrel with the recoil hawg muzzle break. The Hawg reduces recoil by 76% according to Browning. I can shoot it all day with no discomfort, it’s barely noticeable. I was very surprised. I do not reload yet but I was interested in the .284 line up. I like the 7 PRC and .280AI. Or even the .280 Remington. Which of those calibers do you guys think would be the easiest to reload. Are the .284s 7mm cheaper to reload than the .300.? Thanks for any input

I'm getting 3160 avg out of my 300 mag. CA ridgeline with 181 hammers and H1000 and I haven't even hit the top end. I was reaching about 3225 when I started seeing pressure. Lets see the prc hit 4000 pounds of energy. I think the 7 PRC is just a over glorified 7 mag to sell more guns and ammo.

At 3225fps, the 181 Hammer 30 cal with G7 BC of 272 has 4181 ft-lbs energy at 0 yards. Curiously that's nearly the exact speed I'm getting with my 170 grain 270 bullet in my 270-7PRC with 3927 ft-lbs of energy at 0 yards. That's 214 ft-lbs energy difference. Respectfully, have you or do you encounter frequently any animal that requires that energy to no longer be compatible with life? I watch hunters kill elk at over 600 yards with a 243. My 270-7PRC outperforms the 7PRC with a 180 grain bullet at 3000fps and the 195 EOL at 2900fps in energy, drop and drift. FWIW, I have three 300Win mags, well sort of. All are Tikka T3x. Kept one intact, converted one to a 7PRC with a Proof barrel but kept the 300WM barrel. I'm taking the T3x Hunter to my rifle builder tomorrow to convert it to a 6.5PRC. Was going to make another 270-7PRC with it but noticed my Brux barrel is a 9.5 twist. So I'm saving it for a regular 270 Win. My 300WMs all shot factory Norma 180 Bondstrike very well. so much so, I won't bother handloading for them

The 7PRC should be compared to the 7Rem Mag, 7 Wby and the 28 Nosler. The 7 PRC is almost identical in performace to the 7RM or 7Wby. The advantage of the 7PRC, Shorter and Fater in a Std long action, seats out longer Bullets.

I think this is a poor comparison overall. 3000 fps with the 175 eld-x is right at the top velocity you can get with the cartridge and you currently need to handload to get that performance. Yet you use a 300 win mag load that is almost 200 fps short of top end win mag velocity. You plug in even 3100 fps for the 300 WM and you're at 33.94" drop at 500. You're shooting a good amount more powder in a larger bore size so you get enough extra velocity to generally outrace the 7 PRC with the 300 WM at typical hunting ranges. More speed, more energy, and larger frontal diameter of projectile give the killing edge to the 300 WM. However, you pay for that in more recoil, worse wind drift, and a cartridge that fights you a little more with its design, making hitting your target somewhat more difficult.
