Justin, my family has been in California since 1860 and I can give you some info: The reason the residents of Bodie relied on outhouses till the very end, was that it was too expensive to install a wastewater system (toilet, cesspool, and leach field). Much cheaper and quicker making an outhouse. Some residents, when they would move, would disassemble their homes and take the house with them in a wagon (one reason there is a lot of outhouses, but few houses in Bodie). The wastewater system would be too big of an investment to leave behind, but the outhouse would not be a big financial loss.

This video was great for my 4th & 5th graders in a homeschool co-op class. Showed it in our Westward Expansion class and the kids perked up right away and thought you was hilarious. Thanks so much! You rock!

Great Randomland! I love a glimpse into the old west. I commented on the vlog you did on the old cemetery and told about how my mom's father was murdered in a card game back in 1934 in Wyoming. When you were talking in this vlog about the justice system, I was thinking how true it was. The men who killed him were acquitted, too. I'm pretty sure the rule of the land was 'if you get killed in a poker game, it's somehow your fault'. My sister has the newspaper clippings from the local paper, I'm going to have to have her dig them out for me. Fascinating stuff. I'm supporting you on Patreon, because I definitely want to see more of your vlogs. You have a way of imparting information about history that makes things come alive.

A very interesting and informative video. We really enjoy your videos.

To go on the stamp mill tour, you have to get there early in the day, as the numbers are limited. You go to the museum and ask for a token for the tour. Once you gather for the tour, the guide asks for your token then reveals that it is real gold. I still have the sense of "hearing" the noise of the stamps while on the tour!

My uncle was part of a team that made a 1 hour 16m documentary of Bodie in the 70's Great film. Back in those days it was a full production. No handy technology in those days.

There are many ghost towns in Montana that are fun to visit, and it's always interesting to see what kind of towns existed around the same time in other states. Really cool

he forgot to say that you're not allowed to pick up anything from Bodie, not even a rock BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS CURSED! People who have taken things have had family members die, illnesses, bad luck so bad that they sent back the souvenirs they picked up.

Ever heard of the Curse of Bodie. Legend has it that anyone who takes something from Bodie is doomed to live a life of misery and suffer a life of endless misfortune until they return what they took to the location. And its not reserved to just the relics of the past, even the taking of a simple rock can bring the curse upon you.

Justin, anything paranormal happen to you on this trip? When I went there about 12 years ago, I was on a tour and I had fresh batteries in my camera and when I was taking the first 2 pictures, my camera malfunctioned and I couldn't take anymore pictures.

Bodie had a similar reputation as Stockton does.

I recommend visiting on the Friends of Bodie Day. Its a bit like Disneyland's Dapper Day. People come dressed up in period clothing and walk around the town.

I can't believe ive passed there and never had the opportunity to explore it :(
