Which other big country friendships are there? (for some reason the zooms & transitions in this video weren't as smooth(?), I think it has to do with the frame rate setting during the edit, I'm going to try and solve this)

Nah, germany was our biggest rival only since napoleon. And we really hated them only after the franco prussian war of the second empire. Before that we shared a lot of history and values, up till charlemagne and represented most of the troops for the crusades. Whats way more impressive is peace with our real oldest rivals : the english.

Greetings to you friend! In the video some aspects of the Polish-Hungarian friendship were already mentioned. An interesting aspect is also that in 1576 Stefan Batory/Báthory István issued an official instruction which was sent to the commander of the hussars, in which the detailed conditions were specified for the standardization of the weapons and armor of the hussars. The document even contained the order to wear Hungarian clothing. However, at that time there was already a fashion for Hungarian clothing in Poland. So the order was actually superfluous. An interesting aspect is also that the Polish language also contains hungarisms! Because during the reign of Stefan Batory/Báthory István, the Polish language incorporated numerous hungarisms which continue to be in active use. Most of them have military connotations, such as: szereg (row), orszak (procession), giermek (squire), dobosz (drummer), hajduk (highwayman), hejnał (bugle call), and puchar (goblet). Another aspect is that even the famous Polish winged hussars have Hungarian references. The characteristic hussar helmet Szyszak, for example, had its origins in the hungarian sisak helmet. The Hussars wore when they don't wear armor a coat which was called czuha (szűr in Hungarian). The forearms were protected by vambraces (karwos in Hungarian). Alos other elements of weaponry with the Hungarian origin included the horseman’s pick (striking and bladed weapon), koncerz (a type of a long thrust sword) and high riding boots with traditional crescent-shaped iron heels. However, two other elements were the most characteristic of the Hussars, and later of the entire nobility of the Polish Republic. The first item is the traditional magierka cap, which was known as Magyar in Hungarian. Made of thick broadcloth, plain woven cloth, it was worn by the Hussars away from the battlefield later it became fashionable among the entire Polish nobility. The second characteristic element is the famous Hussar sabre which originates from the Hungarian sabre. Known in Poland already in the Middle Ages, it became widely used with the arrival of the Serbian and Hungarian Racs. The sabres were sometimes embellished with an image of the king or his name, and then referred to as batorówka in Polish (from Báthory). Magierka caps and Hungarian sabres became inseparable attributes of the Hussars and, following their example, of all Polish nobility. To this day we consider them to be a permanent element of the national dress of the First Polish Republic, on equal footing with żupan and kontusz.

England wasn't the one helping Portugal during the napoleonic era, it was actually the other way around since Napoleon ordered the continental blockade to isolate England from the rest of Europe, and Portugal was the only country that refused to do so. After which Napoleon invaded Portugal and in return England escorted the Portuguese royal family to Brazil, which meant that even though Portugal was invaded the capital of the empire moved from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro thus assuring that the empire was still in control. Here is a WW1 British soldiers song about this alliance. " The Germans call us "Tommy", we always call him "Fritz". We call a Frenchman "Froggy", which sends him into fits... But our oldest ally you know who that means.... must never be referred to as... the good old "Pork and Beans (Portugal)"!"

@benvolio mozart The French do not call the English “Rosbifs” due to the colour of their skin (which makes no sense whatsoever), but simply because in the 18th century roasting meats, especially beef, was an extremely popular cooking method in England. Therefore the word was never actually intended to offend, but to simply characterise the traditional eating habits of the English people (although in recent years it has definitely been used with a little more sarcasm). I’ve never heard anyone from the US use the phrase “yellow-teeth donkey” however...

When talking about Polish-Hungarian relations, it's worth mentioning the common rulers wearing the crowns of both kingdoms: Ludwik Węgierski / I. Lajos and Władysław III / I. Ulászló Hungary and Poland adopted Christianity and received their first kings at a similar time, having the same enemies in the Middle Ages: Czechs, Germans, Mongols and Turks. Both countries acted as bulwarks or ramparts of European civilization. During the great Polish-Bolshevik war, at a critical moment in Battle of Warsaw in 1920, the whole world refused to help Poles, except for a handful of daredevils such as Merian C. Cooper (aviator and later director of King Kong) and the indestructible Carton de Wiart. Only the Hungarians helped the Poles in the most critical moment of the war, they handed over to the Polish army all their ammunition, which the Poles were desperately lacking. Even during the Warsaw Uprising, which Poles afraid raised in 1944 against the Third Reich - the Germans were that Hungarian military units stationed near Warsaw might join the fight on the Polish side. Glory to Great Hungary! Fun fact: This comment was continuously removed. Who might not like the content of this comment?

Unlike the Scottish/French defencive pact against the English which was dissolved when Scotland and England became the same state (therefore making the whole point of it mute - especially during the Napoleonic wars when Scotland as part of the UK declared war on France), England and Portugal's was a true/general alliance which is why it still exists despite the occasional scuffle and why even now they tilt towards favouring the UK when they can.

Long live Polish-Hungarian friendship! Greetings from Poland
@GreatPolishWingedHussars
@GreatPolishWingedHussars 2 жыл бұрын

The US's oldest continuing relationships is likely Netherlands. Officially established in 1782, we've never been at war against each other (The US has had skirmishes with France, the first to recognize the US as a country). Even before the 1782 official relationship, the Dutch were largely supportive of the Americans as the Dutch didn't like the Brits. A Dutch Caribbean island saluted us in 1776 but the Dutch government denied it at the time as they tried to stay neutral and let the war playout. The Dutch controlled ports also aided the US with passage under neutrality. And In 1779, the Dutch did recognize US Navy Captain John Paul Jones's ship as being American at a port in Holland. The ship was captured (or stolen by a pirate in the British view) and had no US flag.

Glory to Great Hungary! If you are going to include Albania and Kosovo, here's a similar one: Romania and Moldova. Romania and Moldova are like Deadpool. Deadpool is able to grow himself out of a single living cell. That should mean that if you cut his hand, you end up with two Deadpools: one grown from the body and one from the severed hand. This is basically what happened to Romania: a limb was cut from it, but grew into an almost identical entity called Moldova.

I should add to the Polish-Hungarian friendship the time when they were united in a personal union in the 14th century during the reign of King Louis the Great of Hungary, along with the Kingdom of Naples, which incidentally was also the greatest extent of land ruled by a Hungarian monarch ever. And we cannot fail to mention the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, when the millions of rounds of ammunition arriving from Hungary via train in the last minute afforded the Poles to stop the Soviet advance. Not to speak of the Crusade of Varna in 1443-44 organized by the two nations, led by the brave, ill-fated King Wladyslaw III of Poland. Forgot to mention that Louis the Great was also the father of King-Queen Jadwiga of Poland.

In a way, the Windsor treaty almost became expanded into a three-way affair with the close relationship between the UK and the US, making it UK - US - Portugal. Not officially, I know, but it does feel that way. And in the 21st century you might add Spain to it. These 4 countries will hardly ever strongly disagree amongst them, despite internal political interests.

Always? Wasn't Hungary part of the Axis and supported Germany in its wars, you know the guys that devoured poland. Edit: Because of many comments I looked into it... and I slowly get the feeling that many have a quite innocent look of hungary (not to say they got influenced by propaganda). Hungary was a fascist country that proactivly enacted antisemitic laws. In addition they tried to get a alliance with italy (and later germany). There goal was to (re)conquer neighboring territories. In addition, they initiated the work to join the Tripartite Pact, and got frst rejected by Italy and Germany. The truth is, that Hungary wasn't innocent. They were the same like Germany and Italy. They prefered strong neighbors that allow them to restore their "old borders" over their friendship with poland. Yes they might have helped polish refugees... but so did germans with jewish refugees (with the slight difference that the germans payed a much higher price). Propaganda isn't a good thing. And the comments prove why this is a case. Instead of just explaining the polish-hungarian friendship, everyone acted like I personally insulted them. I literally just asked a question and stated a well know historic fact... if you can't live with the fact that people doesn't know the history of you country or praise it for his false propaganda history you probably should rethink your values. Because your country isn't your identity, its just the place you were born.

Visited Hungary in late 1960ties and from the time I stepped of the train in Budapest was overwhelmed by friendliness of people once they learned that I am Polish. Every Pole knows about friendship of our two nations, but it came to me as a surprise that it translated to the personal level. Wherever we went, even in places where one should not expect it (ticket office, tourist information booth) we were treated as a family given very special treatment. One late at night we drove to the Buda Castle (Royal Palace) from which there was a great view of Pest - at the time it was a seat of the (communist then) government and there was "No Entry" sign on a road which we ignored at the top there was a policeman station and chain blocking a road, not only policemen did not shoot us but he lowered the chain and gave us a guided tour. Saying goes that you learn who your friends are when you are in need and Poland was in dire straights during the WWII, Hungarians who were Germans allies (and consequently should be supporting them) during the Warsaw Uprising were not only allowing unobstructed movement of Polish units, but treating and escorting wounded disregarding official orders. I wish you all the best, brothers (if only your language will be more understandable).

@GreatPolishWingedHussars
@GreatPolishWingedHussars 2 жыл бұрын

@@quasar7951 Not really, at least it's not both-sided. Generally Poles have a fond memory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth times, but I talked to some Lithuanians online and they had quite a different opinion. There's still some saltiness that Poland owned some of Lithuania's land after WWI (including Vilnus, the capital) and overall there's an impression that Lithuania was kinda forced to unify with Poland so that they wouldn't be at risk of an invasion (though we never really had any beef with Lithuania, we were busy fighting Russians for couple centuries). Nowadays I heard that Lithuania tries to distance itself from any Polish remnants on their land, changing the street names and encouraging mixed-families to attend Lithuanian schoold instead of Polish ones. So yeah, it's not looking as bright as some people seem to see it.

It's a funny point because when France removed the last King Louis Phillipe I from its territory in 1848, there was no longer any monarchy. It was only in 1887, during the establishment of the protectorate of Wallis and Futuna, that the traditional chiefdoms could be preserved. It was not until 1961 that Wallis and Futuna became an Overseas Territory (TOM) of the French Republic. Two years earlier, there was no French administration present on the island. This makes these islands one of the last recognized annexations in the world. Even today, Wallisian society is divided over the domination of the new Lavelua (King)
