One thing that's appealing about older video games is the way developers made games with the tools and technology they had available at the time. Is not just nostalgia. Any piece of hardware has it's limitations and developers have to work around those limitations, however those limitations can also open the door for new innovative ideas. Super Mario 64 for example, they couldn't fit as many courses in the cartridge compared to Super Mario World so their idea was to make fewer non-linear courses and give you multiple objectives to complete in them. They made an entirely new game genre by being forced to reinvent the wheel about what a platformer could be based on the limitations of the hardware. It's the same feeling you get when you watch an older film and you see the different approaches to cinematography they had to deal with. It makes you appreciate the work that goes into making these games.

Biggest misconception that brothers me would be that older video games are just not as good. Video games are akin to music in that if it is well constructed it will remain appreciated and respected. Does anyone refuse to listen to music from the past just because it is not current? No. Then why would anyone assume that an older game is no longer worth their time because it too is not current?

This could probably go down a whole rabbit trail and spark a sub-genre of "Misconceptions about RPGs", but I remember my mom couldn't watch me play turn-based RPGs because I would just "stand there and let the bad guys hit me". I think we can all agree turn-based combat is a simulation, not an actual playing-out of real combat. Right?

Being a big mega man fan, I always hear the misconception that mm games are overly difficult. Some people who haven’t played them seem to think they are in league with the likes of battletoads, ninja gaiden and ghosts n’ goblins

The misconception that retro gamers don't like or appreciate newer games ignores the fact that newer games are the result of multi-generational evolutions in design. You don't get to Skyrim on Xbox without open worlds like The Legend of Zelda on the NES. I can have a maybe deeper appreciation for a modern game than a non-retro gamer because I can look back on decades of growth in gaming and can see the many improvements that have occured over the years. My son is 10, and while he may think that Minecraft is the "be all, end all" experience in gaming, he lacks the experience and perspective to appreciate WHY a game like that exists in the first place. He wasn't around for Actraiser or SimCity or Civilization or Theme Hospital or The Sims. All that freedom to build a world he so chooses came from many earlier iterations and innovations that he's never heard of or played. My retro library isn't just for my entertainment; it's for my kids' education. In the same way that my copy of The Odyssey paves the way for my kids to enjoy Harry Potter, my copy of City Connection does as well for Rocket League. Also, Trader Tots.

I'm ashamed to admit I believed the "blowing air into the cartridge pins" myth for quite some time. It made sense to me at the time, but I know better now.

Also this would be my reply to those quotes to them: 1. 4:06: Well at least, we get to have lot of fun and play to win rather than pay to win XD 2. 7:45: That photo realistic is one of the main reason why you have to wait for longer time for updates with huge gigabyte on it. And yeah, I prefer the 2D one but I also like 3D retro gaming like Daytona USA and Virtua Cop 2.

I think another misconception is someone might say is "that game is the price of a brand new one!"..but to us retro gamers its much more desired than a so called "new one" that we might be willing to pay 4× the price of a "new one" just to get that game we've desired for maybe even decades as we might have been wanting it since childhood. Thats why its worth the price of a "new one" to us.

I was really lucky and grew up playing things like the Super Nintendo and Sega Dreamcast along with other older and classic consoles even though I grew up in the early 2000’s. I didn’t even realize that the Super Nintendo was as old as it was back when I was little I just thought that the games were going for that graphical style rather than they were older than games on the Dreamcast. The first game I ever remember playing was Donkey Kong Country on the SNES which is still in my top 5 favorite games of all time. Because of growing up with not only newer, but retro consoles as well I have a lot of nostalgia for retro gaming which I’m really grateful for. Keep up the great work man your videos are amazing!

The 8-16-24-32-64 bit era consoles hooked up to a Professional Video Monitor is absolutely brilliant. The picture quality via RGB is mind blowing. It makes you want to replay all the classics on your PVM’s. 📺

Vintage Games. When you were talking about retro meaning imitating older things, this was all that came to my mind.

I think quite a few retro gamers believe systems with small game libraries usually didn't have many worthwhile titles outside of the greatest hits. I'm here to tell ya systems like the N64 had much more quality games than people often give credit. I'm sure that's the same for other systems with small libraries as well.

You hit the nail on the head mentioning exploring stuff you missed back in the day. I switched from console gaming to exclusively PC gaming in about 94, all the way up until the late 20-teens and I'm finally going back and exploring what I missed. I never had a Super Nintendo either, so I get to explore that library with fresh eyes.

Best example for me was when Jordan kicks re-releases were labeled “retro”. We knew what was retro and the OG. As for what can we call it when we play old games, I guess the best word to use is “classic” or “classic style” but retro is fine by me even if it’s not fully accurate with the definition. Y’all know what we mean. 😊

Tying into your video from earlier this week, a retro game misconception I've heard a number of times is that emulation always runs games better than original hardware. Sometimes, but definitely not always.

Gaming misconception: Some people dismiss some older consoles as bad (for example N64 or Sega Saturn) as bad because they don’t like the well known games on it when there are plenty hidden gems.

My mother still has the misconception that 'video games are a waste of money that rot your brain' Meanwhile she will sit in front of the idiot box and watch reality TV. Still waiting for my copy of Rocket Knight Adventures mother!!

I wish people would have the more focus on framerate. Apparently less than 30 is still not a problem for people. But consoles and TVs are at least starting to make locked 30 the norm with 60 and 120 as options along with Variable Refresh Rate. That's also why early 3D games don't seem to age well. They run at 10-15

2:32 I love that screen : ) It is prefect to play outside. I grew up with the DS, and I remember the pain every time the sun would shine on the console, and it was impossible to see anything. I don't have this problem with my game boy

The, "oh you must have spent a fortune on all of that STUFF." Then trying to explain "uhhh well no actually, you see thrift store here, a yard sale here, oh and these paid me to absorb into my collection....it's complicated."

I absolutely agree with the misconception about people only enjoying retro games because of nostalgia. I was born after the fifth generation and back had already come and gone, and the sixth was on its way out. I absolutely adore these systems and the Super Nintendo is my favorite console of all-time! I mostly play retro games exclusively now, and I have zero nostalgia for 99% of them.

Oh man, Dynamic Cop! The game may be short, but there something so "Sega Arcade like" that just gives it a special charm. Ahh.. memories.😊

Biggest misconceptions in retro gaming I notice is: people who cannot relate to why someone likes retro gaming or thinks a certain game or era was the peak brushes them off as wearing nostalgia goggles. The other misconception I notice only started since the pandemic but shops and people all think retro games even if they’re trash are worth good money. Basically prices even for bad/common games are getting out of control, atleast at retro stores.

The biggest one I always hear is that the technology is dated, and then few of those same people who say that realize that some of these retro games were the pioneers that utilized technology which was the initial iteration of the technology that most games use today. When I was little i remember adults would say: "video games are meaningless." A huge misconception as it helps with depression, improves mental health & let's face it everyone needs a break from life now & then! Video games really use your memory for decision making, problem solving & even stimulates creativity & focus! Video games bring much joy, just ask any kid (or adult) who gets a new console for Christmas or any time for that matter! Video Games just make life that much happier!

I’ve been replaying some old PS1 games recently. Not all of the 3D aged that poorly. I think the Ridge Racer games still look fine, but that’s probably me just liking the aesthetic. And Tobal No.1 looks outright good still. The morphing textures is honestly the biggest problem, and flat polygons with a face texture. But some artists who understood the limits could create games that aged fine even though it’s from the PS1 3D era. Jumping Flash, Wipe out series, Horned Owl, Zero Divide, and I’m probably missing a lot. They didn’t really push the hardware, but looked great. It’s when they push the hardware is when things go pear shaped.

If you are willing to get a cheap or low end TV, most, even 4K screens, have a composite video in port. Some of us don’t have the luck or space for being able to own a CRT to retro game on. Another solution is to use a smaller TV, of around 20-25 inches diagonal, that is more representative of the size of TV used back in the day. A 1080 set ins important. A 4K set can be difficult to put retro games on and a good upscaler can cost about as much as 10-20 good action(non-rpg) games

My kids grew up playing these games together with me and my wife. I don’t think they have misconceptions (rather accurate conceptions) as we can laugh together at the ones that don’t hold up but they recognize how awesome and ridiculous some of the story concepts are, and how innovative they were for the time. It’s all perspective. No matter the age I think people will enjoy a lot of games that stood the test of time. Case in point…I can’t get my 14 year old to play anything other than Fortnite. Yet he sat down and played through Contra with me the other night and had a great time. Same concept with movies. My 11 year old loves Spaceballs but there are other movies from back then that I loved but we now agree they stink. We did the same thing back then. Once a new generation console came out it blew away the games of the previous. But this is all in how I personally raised mine. I can understand the misconceptions from someone coming in cold. You made a great point about people selling off games. However I really wish I hadn’t sold all my Atari games back then just so I could play Faxanadu.

I have another two retro gaming misconceptions: 1. Retro Gaming is just too easy and are only for kids XD 2. Retro Game Music are so boring and repetitive.

I know I've said this to you before, and I'll say it again, the first two generations of 2-D games don't look that great, like the first generation of 3-D games, but their graphics don't get a bad rap, because they were released before the North America video game boom of 1986. Henceforth, not as many people played them/have nostalgia for them, so they are not af critiqued, as much. 3-D video game graphics did NOT have the luxury of being postponed for 5 years, because whichever console could do 3-D, could be heavily advertised, because people CRAVED being able to play in an extra dimension. It's like saying, "The ENTIRE video games industry should have started developing two-dimensional games in 1983, instead of 1972, so that their graphics would look better." Also, "blocky" graphics were NOT a deterrent, due to the amount of extra-dimensional play area people now had. There WAS no precedent on what are GOOD 3-D graphics, until the HD era of video gaming. It's like telling a 1960's muscle car fan that his beloved cat steers and brakes horribly. Driving a modern muscle car gives one perspective, but that doesn't mean thay his beloved cars shouldn't have been developed, when he was in his prime. Also, I like the comedic spray of ketchup, into your mouth. 👌

While not a misconception I've found that retro games actually are more like a band. They're made with a small team & tend to be a more "pure" expression of that group's (or their creative lead's) ideas.

I have nostalgia for the n64 because I used to play it all the time at my uncles house and it came out before I was even born

8:37 Ackshually... The moisture from your breath gives better conductivity to the metal contacts and can remove small amounts of new dust; it's not good for the long term because of corrosion, but it does work. A better method is to just use Q-tips and a high % isopropyl alcohol to clean the pins.

Speaking of misconceptions, blowing into cartridges actually works. It is not good in the long term because humidity causes corrosion. but in the end it is a method that does work.

I was born in the 2000s. First game I ever played was Super Mario World at 3-4 years old, on Zsnes. I still remember the first time my Dad presented to me Mario 64, on Project 64, and I was like "Wow! It's 3D! Everything here is different!". When I got older, I learned how to download roms and emulators myself, and from there, the door was blown right open. If it EXISTS, I can play it. No need to ask my parents to buy games. I never even SAW a PS1 but I still had a great time with PSX-Fin and some BINs I downloaded from Rox-Roms. Only problem was Wii and Gamecube games, which are harder to emulate. But after softmodding my Wii and installing Nintendon't, I went from being a slave of the system to being the king of it! "You can't tell me what I can or cannot play, you little plastic brick! I'm gonna play whatever I want and YOU WILL RUN IT!" Talking about being a little rebel. I grew up with retro games despite most of them coming before I was even born. I dream of one day having a room with retro consoles, upscalers, flashcarts, ODSs, a closet for controllers, TV in middle and a large couch. Now that's a life!

I developed a full sized Gameboy Game last year and tested heavily on original DMG hardware. It was almost impossible to see the screen. The GBC is visible at least.

I love retro games,mainly because games back than were actually complete;i dont really like many modern games because most of them are incomplete or have microtransactions or DLC and most modern games lose value fast

I’ve been collecting both games I grew up with as well as many I never got to play. One game I picked up recently is Pirates Legend of Black Kat for OG Xbox. I remember loving it back then but when I gave it a shot I questioned myself as to why I loved it so much lol

Another great video... thank you!! Your comment about nostalgia is really interesting. I grew up with an NES (and later an SNES and N64) and my uncle had a Sega Master System. I now have a Genesis Mini, and I bought a bunch of TurboGrafx 16 games on the Wii U virtual console. I love the TG16 and Genesis games that I've never played before. So you're right - it's not nostalgia why I like games like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine or Devil's Crush. But when I looked at the PS1 classic, I didn't pick it up because it held no appeal to me whatsoever. The games looked like just older versions of more modern games. And I didn't see the appeal of low-polygon games. And when I visited a friend with a retro Atari system, again, I didn't like the look of the games (too old - a weird thing for me to think, I know), and I had little interest in it. Is it possible to feel nostalgic about an art style? In particular, I really feel like 16-bit graphics are superb (with some notable 8-bit games that look great, along with some pixel art 32-bit games on the other end like Game Boy Advance and Castlevania SOTN also drawing my interest). Strangely, the new Shanti games and the newer Ghosts n Goblins resurrection game look objectively great, but to me they look too polished - it's hard to explain. I like to see my pixels when I'm playing. Thanks as always for a thought-provoking video. The biggest retro gaming myth to me was that either SNES or Genesis was better. I was firmly in the Nintendo camp growing up, but I now better understand that both systems were incredible, both had great exclusive games, and we should be so lucky in the future to ever witness such a clash of greatness between two similar but different gaming systems in the future. Speaking of actual retro games, I just purchased and installed Tanglewood onto my Genesis Mini! It looks 16-bit, was programmed to work on original Genesis hardware, and it was released in 2018. As someone who's played retro games on modern TVs and thought they looked fine, I think the issue is less "they're playing the games on a modern TV" and moreso "they're looking at these games through the eyes of a graphics snob"

Retro gamers have redefined the word "retro". The word is defined as "imitative of a style, fashion, or design from the recent past". It's sort of like a 2005 Mustang, which looks like a 60's era Mustang. Today the words "retro gaming" simply means older games.

Yes words can adopt new meanings over time, such as decimation which means to destroy a tenth of something, yet it’s been used synonymously with completely destroying something. Or the word apocalypse is actually an unveiling, maybe of a divine revelation of something holy and good, but it’s now synonymous with dystopian futures and zombies.

people like retro games that didn't even grew up with them. most people hear about the really good old games from youtubers like you and many others and become collectors and fans because of that introduction.

I prefer using the word classic when it comes to old video games rather than using the word retro. Another interesting word that gets thrown around a lot is nostalgia, and if you look up the etymology on that word you’ll have a completely different look on it.

I find as I get older I seem to only collect Retro games I enjoyed as a kid or ones I missed out but would have enjoyed. A good example was Okami PS2.

Music could be readily compared to retro gaming, especially in the second category: old things becoming new. Most of what I listen to came out years ago. And I am constantly finding old bands and music for days past that I thoroughly enjoy.

2:30 I actually really like the original Game Boy's screen because it doesn't have a backlight, making it easy on the eyes and more power efficient. The screen tear while moving is pretty bad though.
