I recently got an N64 and I started banjo kazooie today and theres just something I noticed. There are some extremely modern design sensabilities in that game. Like, for example when you unlock a new ability if you arent at full health bottles will be like "ah fam, I got heals for ya, here ya go." And idk, I just found that so modern compared to a lot of retro games. And other little things like making the platforming slightly easier by making the character snap to the platform if youre a little off, and all those kinds of little touches that make the game just a little less frustrating. I also think its one of the N64 games with a better camera than most. Not 100% related but I just felt like gushing because banjo kazooie is good!

I must say, as a long time (10+ years) viewer of the retro gaming scene on KZfaq, your channel has kept me so entertained since I found it a couple days ago and I love the content. The subtle comedy is great & I def can’t wait to see more of your content!

When talking about the greatness of Capcom don’t forget the Saturn and Dreamcast eras. Arguably even better than their 8 and 16bit days.

I loved all the Developers you mentioned but for me personally, EVERYTHING Working Designs brought over here was just amazing. Lunar and Lunar 2 are my all time favorite games. The games Working Designs brought out on the Playstation, Saturn, and Sega Cd are just INCREDIBLE. I miss them so much. Victor Ireland truly was so passionate about bringing games over here we never would have gotten otherwise. The greatest artistry and packaging and for a normal price. They are number 1 for my collecting Goals. Trying to find Popful Mail, The Arc The Lad collection, and the Sega Ages Collection next.

Namco is my favorite because the Tekken and Ridge Racer series. This was Namco before they merged with Bandai. Tekken 2 through 5 are awesome. Ridge Racer on PSP was my fav.

Nintendo is my favorite developer for sure, even today. Next to them I’d say RareWare

I'm going to take the ultimate fence sitting approach here and say, all of them. If I didn't get the desire to play different games and genres then I wouldn't have the collection I do. Of the ones you mentioned, I like and appreciate them all.....equally. probably why I always spend a good portion of time just trying to decide what to play lol.

Even though as an “adult” child at heart, I came to appreciate more game developers like Sega, Capcom, Konami, Namco, Atlus, EA and the list could go on forever. All started with my love for Nintendo. Which still in my humble opinion the best developer in the world. What does my ass knows anyways... it only uses soft doble sheet of paper. :)

This son of a barnacle, agrees with all developers who tried and gave us a diverse selection of games to choose from. Back in the 90's, we had many new great games to choose from. However, only a few chosen remain the classics of today. SEGA/NINTENDO??? You decide... I miss the days of yesterday... Thank you for another awesome retro game based video!!!

Sunsoft made some amazing tech-pushing games on the 8 and 16 bit systems. Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, Spy Hunter, the Batman games, the Final Fantasy Adventure games (I know, I know... those were re-releases of the SaGa series...), Journey to Silius, Lemmings, the Looney Tunes games, the Aero games, Flashback, and I'm probably missing more. Blaster Master alone is one of those pulse-quickening games with a banger of a soundtrack and smoooooooth graphics full of color and detail.

Really appreciate the Sonic & Knuckles footage. If we're talking about retro developers, I'd have to give a shout-out to Naughty Dog for the original Crash Bandicoot games.

So had an idea for a video for you. You could do one about condiments for video games. So things that accent a game like I found a Mario Galaxy preorder coin and put it next to my official game guide for the game. Anyway might make for a funny video of you putting ketchup on games or something lol. Thanks again for all the funny videos man!

Your last point is an excellent point! I've wondered about this many times, as I have seen people liking one game or another in a genre, console, etc. Most people haven't played but a couple hundred, or maybe 1,000 games in their lifetime. So how would a person like that truly know the BEST in a given genre, UNLESS that was the main preferred genre? For me, I've played probably over 9,000 games, and finished 4,500, but I STILL haven't played every game for every genre. For some, like run n' gun games, shooters, etc., I actually have played most or all of the that were released for the US, but I can say, with fair certainty, that most people have not. So with that stated, you should do a video about how MANY games a person has played and also finished.

There's a lot of devs that made games from which I have great memories of and I still enjoy playing until today. Also there are other developers that I (re)discovered along all of those years of researching and discovering retro games. Not just SEGA, Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft, Capcom, Konami, Namco or Atlus but also SNK, ADK, Renovation, Wolf Team, Sunsoft, Technosoft, Hudson Soft, Toaplan, Treasure, Taito, Pack In Video, Vic Tokai, Bandai, Kaneko, Nichibutsu, Cave, Raizing were all great japanese developers that provided us so much fun.

LJN has countless underrated timeless classics that need more recognition.

This is super hard to answer. My first thought was Working Designs but immediately remembered that they never actually MADE a game. They just brought over, localized (putting their distinctive touch in them) and distributed games. After that I thought Konami but then I thought "Okay what name do I see on a game that makes me happy and gives me confidence that it will be a good game?" First thought was Falcom but then Atlus came to mind also. I'm at a complete loss here.

Wonderful video as always and you hit the nail on the head as far as who some of the best developers were. I want to give some love to two of the true underdogs though. Sunsoft was absolutely incredible during the NES era! Blaster Master remains one of my all-time favorite games and they made plenty of other great games with some of the best music you will ever hear! And secondly, Monolith Soft has created some of the finest games ever in Xenogears, the Xenosaga trilogy, and Xenoblade Chronicles. There aren't many games that I feel could go toe-to-toe with Chrono Trigger when it comes to all-time greatness but the third Xenosaga game is on the same level and that is saying something!

Late to the party here, but I have to go with Working Designs! They were absolute juggernauts for the 16 and 32-bit eras, especially if you were a JRPG fan-boy such as myself.

Capcom by lightyears. Multiple amazing games in various genres for almost every major system. The name is synonymous with quality fun.

i agreed with the big names you mentioned like nintendo and sega.. konami and capcom, you even mentioned natsume.. how obscure but i do love wildguns, but i liked Midway, NEC (tg16/pc engine) and Irem (r-type/metal storm (nes)).. also, my favorite toilet paper is banana peels, i found a use for them outside of mario kart 64..

Quilton, of course. :D Team Andromeda is one of my favourite developers. They only made 3 games in their short life time, and all three are brilliant. SEGA in general from the early 90s to early 2000s was hugely creative, and their games were so fun and unique during this period, especially towards the end. But all the developers you mention in the video made or still make great games. We're so lucky to have had them making games for us.

A few standout developers that immediately pop into my mind are Interplay, id Software, Sierra Entertainment, and Apogee. Konami is especially impressive considering, in addition to being a power-house game developer since the nascency of video gaming itself, they also developed and have maintained the world's largest trading card game franchise for over 25 years.

Aww man, you made this easy. Nintendo, of course!! So many mainstay series like Mario and Metroid that spanned MULTIPLE systems, the early Black Box games on the NES, and let’s not forget Earthbound! But as far as other developers, my favorites are Capcom, Rare, Sega, and Konami. So many developers to choose from. Btw a few others that I think sometimes go under the radar are Acclaim, Data East, Tecmo, and Hudson Soft. Favorite toilet paper before the pandemic? The kind that I bought for $0.69 at Kroger. Now no 🧻 is cheap, so probably Angel Soft.

I live in a house from the 40s that has a really small toilet paper holder built into the wall. I've been looking for the holy grail of budget tp that fits the slot but doesn't feel like sandpaper.

Great video dude. I feel like the developer Masaya deserves an honorable mention. While they didn't publish a lot of games, they did make some memorable games. Strategy games like Langrisser & Vixen 357, side scrolling action games like the Kaizou Choujin Schbibinman series, Target Earth & Cybernator (the latter 2 being part of the Assault Suit series), and shooters like Gleylancer & Wings of Wor. Though they're probably probably best known for the manliest video game series ever made.

The best third party developers were Capcom, Konami, and Squaresoft by far. They dominated the market in the 90's and felt like they could no wrong. Now they can barely do right. Although Capcom has gotten better in the past couple of years. Here's hoping Konami and Square follow as well.

Sunsoft had a great 8 bit era, but they dropped the ball in the 16 bit era.

Nintendo by a mile. Kinda surprised you left Atari and Namco out of the conversation. They were pretty dominant in the beginning of the retro era of videogames. Toilet paper? Electronic Arts sports game manuals, of course.

My favorite game developers are Nintendo and Capcom. I have so many fond memories from every console generation of playing Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Mega Man. Regarding toilet paper, the large Kirkland pack from Costco is what I use.

I personally love Konami, it's a shame they don't make games anymore. Apparently, they make mostly slot machines now.

Capcom and the 6 original mega man games will forever be legendary to me add in duck tales and chip and dale. You start to see Capcom knew when to "fire on all cylinders".

For the NES/SNES/GENESIS era, both CAPCOM and KONAMI equally had hit after hit!

My favorite toilet paper is sold here in Japan. It's the Tom and Jerry brand. Yes, the cat and mouse are printed on toilet paper here. It also smells like fruit if you can imagine that.

A very difficult question as there were a good number of second or third party developers that released many top-notch classic games. The ones you already mentioned have some of my favorite classic games. I also enjoy games from Intelligent Systems, Taito, HAL Laboratory, Namco, Sunsoft, Hudson Soft, Sony and many others. If I was forced to choose, I'd probably go with a tie between Nintendo and Sega. During the "Great Console Wars" of the early 90's, both companies really shined with many really great games! Looking back, many of the games in my collection were either from Nintendo or Sega.

I would love to see a video about Capcom’s Disney games, or just Disney games in general. That’s quite a blu ray collection you have! Very impressive

Konami and Psytronik get my vote! Konami for the Contra and Metal Gear series. Psytronik for continuing to put out a stream of awesome games for the C64. Charmin.

Nintendo, Konami/Ultra, Capcom, Rare, Factor5, Square, Lucasarts... maybe even Acclaim. Cannot remember any bad game coming from them back in the day? Guess i will pick Rare for really being on fire during the SNES and N64 era (but actually also on NES, RC Pro Am, Snake Rattle n Roll...). Also have a soft spot for Factor5 as being that one iconic german developer that really made some great stuff and had Chris Hülsbeck on board...

Idk.. It's hard to choose but I think I will go with kitchen paper I like the shape of the big rolls and they are comfortable to whipe your hands with :)

If PC games counted, Lucas Arts would definitely be up there. Midway and Namco knew how to make arcade bangers.

Sega and Nintendo are my favorite retro game developers. Many of the games they made are still fun and look pretty good.

I love them all tbh Konami changed my life with Dance Dance Revolution, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. Capcom has so many great franchises like Devil May Cry, Marvel Vs Capcom (at least the first few), 19XX, Powerstone. Sunsoft gave us Clock Tower & Astra Superstars. Technosoft gave us Thunderforce. Namco gave us Pac-Man, Galaxian, Splatterhouse, Soulcalibur. Sega, which is my heart gave us OutRun, Space Harrier, Streets of Rage, The House of The Dead, Cyber Troops Virtual-On, Super Hang On, Samba de Amigo.

I love them all. I want to throw Working designs into the mix, in addition to making some of my favorite games their packaging was amazing.

Sega by a country mile...for the soundtracks alone. The Dreamcast startup tone sounds like a future that never came to pass...

I'd have to go with Sega. I like Nintendo too, but Sega was just insane. You never knew what was going to be in the box. Also EA used to be interesting on the Genesis. Populous, Zany Golf, Mutant Football, Haunting, NHL, and more.

Kirkland is by far my favourite developer. Great TP and fairly priced at Costco.

Konami has my favorite games ever, but I have to give mad props to the crew who left Konami & created Treasure! Those games are so different that it seemed each game they put out was a treasure in it self! They influenced me so much so I just had a person hand make me a real Treasure Chest out of wood so I can put in all my Treasure Games in it. Might have to buy it as my kids are always playing with it when they think I'm not looking! Silly Kids my Treasure Chest is for the biggest kid in the house! Arrrhhhh!

I was straight Capcom growing up, but I have a soft spot for Kanomi. But then super Mario World is one of my favorite games, but I had a sega so Sonic is king. Hmmmmm.

Growing up, it was Nintendo and Capcom for me.

A lot of people will probably try to pick something slightly off-beat just to be unique, but my honest answers would be Nintendo and Charmin 2-ply. If I had to pick one not mentioned in the video, I'd go with Chunsoft for the early Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior games.

Id, Valve, Machine Games and Arkane! Great Stuff, as always!

My favorite toilet paper? I will go with anything soft and multi-ply. There's no sense in getting the cheap stuff that chafes (that is, when it doesn't rip)! I much prefer the sensation of wiping with a few sheets of a fluffy kitten over the feeling of using half the one-ply roll of sandpaper and still accidentally tearing it and having a stinky pinky.

Squaresoft, Capcom, Nintendo, SNK, Sega and Konami are worthy of top honors.

Oh man, for me it will always be Konami and Squaresoft, but I guess I will always love side scrolling beat 'em ups and platformers as well as epic JRPG's! Cheers my man!

TP: I love Charmin, just so soft, ya know? Games: I grew up owning Nintendo, while playing Sega at friend's houses. As Sony got into the mix, I got into the playstation, the PS2, skipped the PS3 for the Wii and then got a PS4, still gonna wait to get the PS5. I have a Switch of course. I've owned all Nintendo consoles at some point. Currently, I own: a DS lite, a GBA, Gameboy, a GC, a Wii, a Wii U, a Switch, and a New 3DS. Some of the systems I don't own anymore are: SNES, NES, N64, Gameboy Color. Thanks for the great video and for giving me the chance to go on about games :D

Nice video, and its too dang hard to choose one especially the earlier generations as it seems we are talking the 80s and 90s(and as I watched your video and thought..yea I can't choose one and I ain't even gonna try). I can tell you what toilet paper though, I use old LJN instruction manuals. If I can only figure out what to repurpose these cartridges in to now, I sure as heck ain't gonna play em.

Great video as usual! Quick question…. Did you clean each one of your cartridges as you collected them? They look super clean. Meaning no stickers, residue, sharpie, etc…. Or are they your childhood games just well preserved?

As a kid I loved Nintendo, but I also fell in love with Capcom, by getting to know Megaman, then there was Konami too. I got to play old Square / Enix games as a grown up and I would definitely add them to my top 5 developers. As for toilet paper, if possible it is best to take a short shower, this way one needs even less paper.

I no longer go premium because I now have a bidet. It was a delightful investment so now I just buy the off brand stuff that's still thick enough to not crumble when wet

Not my favourite, but Konami seemed to provide the greatest variety on both the Genesis and SNES, so it feels like they really need to be considered. On theory they did the best job of providing great memories for 90’s kids, regardless of which side of the Nintendo vs Sega battle you found yourself on. My personal choice is Nintendo based on sheer variety and quality, followed by Rare and Treasure for pumping out the most optimized games for the SNES and Genesis respectively. Definitely Charmin tp, most comfortable and best cleaning, and the dancing bears are a hoot too. And to be parrot 🦜 for game developers, nintendo and sega are my favorites with capcom and Konami being right behind.

Tough question, I like to play a wide variety games across multiple genres that aren't really comparable. I guess quantity has a quality of it's own as uncle Joe used to say so I'll answer with that in mind. Let's see, I had an Atari 2600jr , NES, SNES, Gameboy, and Gamegear before going PC in '95. I had 5 Mega Man games purchased new over 3 systems so I'll say Capcom. Loved them all. Next runner up would be Nintendo with 4 Mario games over 2 systems. Rarely had more than 2 of any other series.

I think it’s fair to consider Second Party developers like HAL and Intelligent Systems as Nintendo seeing as how the vast majority of Sega games were made by developers under their umbrella.

Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Hudson, Konami, Treasure, Square, Core, Naughty Dog, Tecmo, Data East, Jaleco, can go on and on as they were truly great, dedicated, imaginative, hard working teams that all made games without relying on patches LOL.......Scott Tissue (1000 sheets per roll) I’m not cheap, just frugal.

Tri-Ace, GameArts, Falcom, Team Silent, Nipping Ichi Software, Capcom, Konami, Square, Enix, Square Enix, Working Designs, Xseed Games, NIS America. Sony PlayStation! JRPGs, Psychological Horror, Mega Man, MGS, Castlevania FTFW!!

So for me the answer just has to be Nintendo. So many amazing games of wide variety, almost all of which are so deeply creative and well-polished. Squaresoft is right below them for me. Also, something I strongly believe, which seems to be a hot take, is that Sega was an enormously underrated developer of RPGs. In my opinion Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Skies of Arcadia, etc. were just as good as most of Squaresoft's output.

Even though RPGs are my jam, I'd have to pick Nintendo for their consistent high-quality, creative, and flavorful games that kept changing in style between console generations yet never lost sight of the Nintendo feel. And single-ply, paper-thin, 3 squares. =D

They didn't make retro games, they made the modern games of their time. Playing them now is retro.

I think one of the best retro game makers have to be Konami, Capcom, and Sunsoft. Konami has some great games with good soundtracks. Capcom does too. I think their mega man games are really good but I think Sunsoft did one hell of a great job with their games. I mean just hear the soundtracks to games like Journey to Silius, Blaster Master, and even Batman! Also they knew how to really push the limits of the NES Sound chip with Sunsoft Bass.

Konami hands down. You have Castlevania, Contra, Blades of Steel, Double Dribble, TMNT, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Sunset Riders, the list goes on.

Sunsoft for the sheer variety on the NES. They were all fantastic as well.

I think it's Nintendo by a huge, huge margin. In a distant second place.... Konami. Honorable mentions to Hudson Soft, Taito, and TECMO.

For the 8 and 16 bit generation, Nintendo is my favorite publisher. A good test is to ask someone if they could only for now on play games from one publisher from that era, which would it be?
