Cos it's fun, and they both have one thing in common that not a whole lot of other sports can relate to: Field tackles and how damn hard they can go. Plus, the ball they use. They're similar enough games but are primarily played in different regions so, it's fun to compare what (basically) everyone but Americans are doing across the pond while we put on helmets and tackle more recklessly at generally faster, more break-neck speeds.

You must be joking, league hits are so much harder. Youre running from 10m away so both sides pick up more momentum and so the hits in an average game are bigger. I've played both and can say i had a much easier time in union with the tackling and how hard people ran the ball in. (We can both agree that it's better than what the yanks play)

In American football you make 1 tackle and thats the play but in rugby you need to make many in one and then turn around and attack, all the players attack and defend unlike American football where each player does 1 job all game and nothing else, how would that be fun to play?

I'm American so I don't really knows the rules of rugby but are you allowed to lower your shoulder when you're about to get hit cuz most of these dudes gettin crushed are running down the field with the ball gettin hit standing straight up and down like a board? I'm just asking cuz from playing American football that's the first thing u learn as a running back. Don't run straight up and down or you'll get crushed.

You can, but for the most part it's when you take two props (linemen equivalent) and they just run at each other to start the game again after a foul. These hits are from being downfield and expecting to either get hit, or pass, something you're not trained to do as a RB. If we were to start dropping shoulders to try and keep going you're more likely to be stopped, picked up, and dropped on your head. That's why most of them are standing up, because they're looking for run lanes or a pass. You also have blockers, it's basically you vs. them in rugby

If rugby players are the most elite (as some like to say) the most tough etc. why is it that they dont play NFL and make millions per year/game? Because most of them cant handle it. Not saying they are pussies but it very different game and while rugby is a contact sport (and they are tough - dont get me wrong) NFL is a collision sport. They hits are career ending at times (although the newer rules are reducing that). Simply said neither player - rugby or NFL are pussies. Anyone that says/thinks otherwise just have not played.

As an American football fan, these are some pretty hard hits. Football hits are about equal but the pads we wear actually make it hurt worse to be honest. The pads and helmet aren’t there to protect from injury. They are their to prevent death. Altogether football hits are a little worse but in no way is this a soft sport.

They aren't equal, average Rugby hit is earth gravity x 10, average NFL hit is 25 x earth gravities. The pads and helmets are definitely are a factor, but pads and helmets don't necessarily help with whiplash style effects. NFL players also run about a full half second faster in a 40 on average. Speed is the most deadly aspect of big hits in either sport.

Redd boxx they also have pads and hit carelessly. The amount of force actually connecting with the body is only about 1/4, maybe a bit more that the body feels. Also, those numbers you're referencing are from a random american rugby league, against a pro-american football player. If you want proper readings, get an actual pro rugby player in to give a hit, and compare numbers

Rugby has smarters hits, since you are hiting bare bodied. So they get better technique. They use their heads not to use their head.

Lane Ross Uh. I didn’t say these guys would light up AP. I said they tackle correctly. If you played football, you’d recognize the difference between proper form tackling and the head down Sportscenter Highlight BS form most NFL players use now. When you don’t have a bunch of armor on you, you have to tackle correctly. That being said, Darren Bennett lit up a lot of kick returners in his day.

@@Grayk-ge5vo there is a lot more helmet to helmet hits in the NFL, in Rugby people cannot spear tackle because their heads are unprotected. So they use the shoulders and arms. For me there is no arguments, the NFL hits harder, but Rugby hits smarter, and get hits more, since you are playing offense and defense at the same time for 80 minuntes.

Why Rugby is tougher: No padding or armour or helmet. more dangerous. Match lasting 80 minutes with one interval Each position requires an all-rounded skill set, technique, and athleticism scrums, mauls and rucks are frequent and require a lot of energy and strength. One team playing together for the entire game whereas in American football, the offensive group and defensive are split so players relax for longer. Each team player will tackle and will be tackled in the game. Why American football is tougher: Tackling can be anywhere in the body Players can build more momentum for tackles. Padding and helmets add weight and could lead to aches and pains when tackled. Some positions require you to run a lot. Some players require you to block a lot. Inconsistency.
