• Kris Kristofferson - S...
Kris said in an interview, "This song probably was the most directly autobiographical thing I had written. In those days I was living in a slum tenement that was torn down afterwards, but it was 25 dollars a month in a condemned building, and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was more or less looking around me and writing about what I was doing. One time, some people broke into that place, and I had to call the police station to answer some questions about it, and the guy said, "Yeah, they really trashed the place when they went in there." But I hadn't noticed that it was any different. There were holes in the wall bigger than I was. It was quite a place, so "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is kind of more or less what I was living at that time. I guess it was depressing, I don't know, but the chorus was kind of uplifting. ... What I was really trying to do was to keep the feeling of loss and of sadness. For me at that time, it was the loss of my family and looking at a little kid swinging on a swing and his daddy pushing him. That was the feeling I wanted to get for the whole song. I think Sunday was the choice because the bars were closed in the morning and nobody was at work, so if you were alone, it was the most alone time..."

2023 and here I am. Listening with my beautiful wife. Not even 42 yet and I'm getting nastalgic... Reminds me of the days my old man would bang out the tunes all Sunday long. Everything from JC to Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straights.... Then onto Buddy Holly and Tina Turner.... What a lucky lad I am, was and will forever be. Music really tells a person's character.... Let's not mention the Monty Python nights and Red Dwarf after Top Gear.... I knew of better Times. For which I am forever grateful 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

I like the version of it that they performed with the other two “highwaymen” Waylon and Willie. It was a bit slower and more down beat? If that makes sense. That version of this song really gets to me. It’s got more regret and a touch of sadness to it. Brings to mind that feeling we all get when we think about all the coulda shoulda wouldas in our lives. Plus, I love me some Johnny Cash but Kris sings this song so much better. Especially later in life when his voice got aged a bit

At Christmas lunch 20 year back, this classic started. My father looked me in the eyes and said "This is you son." It was, in its special way, one of the most beautiful moments of my life. Dad is 80 now, November 11th at 11am, my time of birth, I complete the 53rd year of life. It probably comes across as a little odd without the back story. But my folks raised a good, kind, compassionate and loving citizen of our precious planet. This song is a major signpost of my life and will always bring a something special til the second I draw my final breath.

For all his mistakes (drugs, alcohol) No one should ever feel the shame of being disowned by their own family as Kris was by his mother and his family. It is funny that the person whose mother deemed "an embarrassment" to their family would go on to be one of the most beloved songwriters in country music.
@abg125
@abg125 5 жыл бұрын
Of course I agree with your statement, but we have to understand it was a different time back then, and also not so different. Think of it from Kris's parents perspective...in their mind they did everything they could to make Kris a "successful" adult in life. We all know that excelled in the military and in education by going to Oxford and after working a pretty lucrative job flying helicopters in the oil industry he turned down a cushy teaching position at West Point...to became a janitor/songwriter. This was in an era when women were homemakers and men made a living and supported the family. Class and etiquette were the social graces of the day...they couldn't understand why after all they did and Kris's hard work he would "throw it all away" to be what they considered the equivalent of a hobo-minstrel...That said, I'm one of the biggest Kristofferson fans in the world and don't condone or agree with the way they treated him. I'm glad he shirked the system and changed the face of country western music...that goes without saying, but I do "understand" their grievance, but I also would never do the same to my child and can't believe they never made amends...I know this still bothers Kris, but it's heartwarming to know how happy his family/children make HIM now...He's probably learned a lot about how to and how not to raise his own children through this....

@@UNMIRED I read recently he didn't speak to his mom for 20 yrs. Other articles give the impression they never made amends. Either way, it's truly horrible for the child, which is Kris, to be shunned as he was. It's never acceptable to not find a way to work that out, at some point. Be angry, fine...but then get over it. Their son grew up to be a fine man, as well as very successful, in spite of them.

A man with a very high IQ. Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, Army Captain and helicopter pilot, they wanted him to teach English at West Point. But he wanted to get into music. He wrote the songs "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night" along with a pile of other hits. He closes every concert with “Why Me, Lord”.

I have loved Johnny all my life - my favorite record album of my childhood was Ring of Fire, it was my parents and I play it so often it had scratches. Kris is the first person I ever remember having a Hollywood crush on, from Star is Born, I was in middle school at the time. He kept his own with Barbara.

Just stumbled upon this. I was born 1970 and never heard this song. Great song, but what was even more amazing was the beginning. Kris says this may now be his proudest moment ever having Johnny Cash said he would be honored to sing this song with him. The humility and genuine kindness from both men just pours out. Does this even happen in today's music?

I occasionally like to crack open a few cold beers, on a Sunday morning, and give this song a listen. Just to feel what Kris and Johnny went thru. I bet many a man and woman both, have been there, done that. And probably thought they wrote the song just for them? I know, I feel that way sometimes.
