As a male, black, 20-something, I remember listening to this song while working with my dad on the weekends. I know the song talks about pain in a relationship but I always applied it to other portions of my life too. There may be let downs, disappointments, and I may mess up, but all of those things work out to strengthen and improve us. We can’t grow without growing pains.

“NO PAIN NO GAIN” What a hit!🎉 I met this Beautiful Nubian Jewel personally in the early 90’s. She reminded me of Cleopatra Jones, see👀 lies coming around the corner and knocked them out. She wrote music based on the perception of the world and people, but she was a WOG and True to herself. I’m honored to have met THE REAL BETTY WRIGHT💯

This song is a metaphor in life not just a man but in life if you want something more your going to go through something if it’s easy then it’s not worth it. A man is just one of many things that you will experience heartache from no matter the color of your skin. You gotta push through the pressure and pressure makes diamonds. Love this song it’s a childhood favorite ❤️ RIH Betty Wright

I think people are missing the point of this song. She saying if your person is generally a good person then fight for your relationship. The point she is making is that when you bring two people together it’s not going to be easy; there’s going to be some hurts, offenses, and misunderstandings. So if you’re expecting your relationship to be all roses and rainbows all the time you’re not going to make it very far. TRUE RELATIONSHIPS are WORK. And they take more than 5 minutes of work. This microwave society we’re living in can’t perceive what she’s saying in this song, because we actually have to invest time in something other than ourselves to make the type of love she’s talking about work.

I don't believe any woman should be in a relationship when experiencing more pain than pleasure. Steve Harvey said a Man show's his Love by Providing. Protecting. Professing. A Real Man will put a roof over your head and pay all the bills. He will make you feel safe. Finally he'll put the ring on the finger without you asking. Women we need to Love Ourselves First so we know we deserve to be treated as a Queen.

I used to love this song. Listening to it tonight though, it hit differently. There’s truth to it for sure, but I don’t know, I think women, Black women in particular, have been conditioned to believe we have to be hurt by men in some manner, in order to “earn” our way into womanhood. We’ve been conditioned to accept some level of mistreatment. That whole “boys will be boys” trope is dead and it should be. We deserve respect and be treated lovingly; gently. Yes, everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes it’s just bad behavior/choices, too, and it’s unacceptable. So forgive for sure, but also know when to walk away. We don’t owe anyone our happiness. We owe it to ourselves to be good alone, if need be.
