Perhaps one of the best Medium #Battlemechs ever made, the #Omnimech known as the #Stormcrow, or #Ryoken, is one of the deadliest beasts to ever walk on the battlefields of #Battletech.
Built by #Clan #SnowRaven, long before the #ClanInvasion, this monster changed the very nature of warfare when it arrived. Never has a medium had such an impact, at least since the Invasion itself.
It descends from another mech as well... so in this video, you will get a double feature, as I also cover #ClanHellsHorses mistake... the #Corvis.

If the Timber Wolf is the next mech to come out, i have the feeling this one might break your current video length record. Personally i am of the impression a long video is not necessarily a better video. Yet if ANY mech deserved a 3+ hour video, it´s the MAD CAT!

@@BigRed40TECH That mech is certainly iconic enough to deserve that much XD It just doesn´t have that much background storie as the Stone Rhino or Gladiator. One question though: i have never seen you using much, if any, MechWarrior 3 or 4 footage. David White´s versions are fairly popular too, after all. And those games, same for MechCommander I+II, are long time fan favorites.

Fantastic medium mech; the prime variant was an ideal core medium mech design for long term conflict, while the UAC20 version was a true nightmare of the invasion era as it could tear apart anything smaller then an atlas in a single round of shooting. This is quite frankly the Mad cat of clan medium mechs in the invasion era.

Out of all the Clan Mediums, the Stormcrow has always managed to find itself in every one of my list no matter what. The Prime configuration is just so darn versatile, I would almost forget it had other configurations.

This thing is the epitome of "keep it simple stupid." Where other omnimechs will dazzle you with available weapons systems that you might (or might not) be able to use effectively, the Stormcrow's weapons are simple, effective, and straightforward. Simply fire at the enemy until its no longer a problem. Clantech ER large lasers ensure that you'll never be out-ranged, and adequate amounts of double heatsinks means youre never in any real danger of cooking yourself. Its truly a marvel of battlemech engineering.

The stormcrow was one of the first Ral Partha mechs I purchased back in the beforefore times. It's a great one.

One of my absolute favorite mechs. This monster is fully capable of taking on virtually any other 'Mech in the game. It's prime is very different from many clan 'mechs of the time. Many clan designs emphasize alpha strikes followed by shutting down and not surviving a counter attack due to a lack of armor.

The Stormcrow B is great example of how outclassed the IS was At Operation Revival. It brings more damage per turn than both a conventional Hunchback and a laser swayback variant combined, yet moves at 150% the speed - comparable to say a Commando or Phoenix Hawk -k model, with CASE baked into the design.

One of the protagonists in a recent story of mine used a Stormcrow for a while - custom configuration with two ER PPCs, AMS, jumpjets and some DHS. Very nasty machine.

The golden 55 tons, clan XL, endo, and FF, and a beautiful 6/9, this machine was always a winner. I think JJ and general optimization has the goshawk (both the original and my favorite the 5) win out over this for me, but having a fantastic generalist like the stormcrow A or having a B run up and disembowl a heavy mech of yours makes them a close second in the ass kicking department.

My favorite personal configuration of the Stormcrow turns it into a mini-vulture/mad-dog. It's definitely a mighty mech and probably my all time favorite clan medium design.

I hate to say it but mediums are my favourite weight and in all honesty (despite my inner sphere bias lol) this is probably the best clan mech there is...if I could have a lance of these in my merc company I'd be happy :-) great vid 40k

Great vid as always :) First time i have heard the corvis referred to as the clan urbie but its spot on... Always thought this mech was the 2nd best mech in TRO 3050 after the Timberwolf. Our gaming group really learned to fear these bastards when they turned up in opfor. From the view point of the clan invasion era, to me its the lower cost mech the Ravens built to take on heavies as well as destroying anything lighter than itself but without the production cost of a heavy. It punches like a heavy cav unit and can keep up with anything used in the med cav role. The B in urban combat was a nightmare...all that knife fighting range firepower just chewed up just about anything in its way...seen it kill assaults with the double tap... Much as I love the Mad Dog (personal fav), i always knew it was outclassed by this medium monster...

Excellent video, perfectly written (and performed), as usual! When you said, it's only fault was a lack of jump jets, I was saying it along with you, as that is all you can criticize about this butcher bird. So glad you have embraced B'tech. I have been lost in it since 1989. You are a huge shot in the arm to those of us who are amazed it is still a thing in this century.

One of those mechs to which it is difficult to find a but... But I honestly think I would have installed the three additional heatsinks that the reactor would have allowed in design, yes, that would lower the available tonnage, but mostly free up some internal space if I needed it. Personally, I am in favor of the mech carrying all the heatsinks that the fusion reactor is able to incorporate. Better than over heat dissipation, that you can not reach it if you need it

When looking up the Stormcrow on Sarna I was surprised to find that none of the configurations equipped the ubiquitous and dangerous Clan ERPPC. All of the Sniper configurations used an LBX Autocannon, Gauss Rifle, or Missiles. A Clan Omnimech seems strangely... incomplete without a Clan ERPPC configuration, especially since two of the Stormcrow variants spend weight & critical to cram in the massive HAG 20 or 30.

My favorite clan mech. My version 12 er small lasers, 2 medium pulse lasers, 2 srm 6 streak. 6 jump jets. All this and the speed to get close. A truly devastating alpha strike.

I love the Stormcrow-A. Moves as fast as a Commando, but strikes harder than an Atlas. I used a Stormcrow to good effect in the running of the Mechwarrior Campaign: Bloodright My fellow players brought 100 ton death machines, not able to catch up with fleeing members of the Hallis line. I was able to extinguish two members of the line with my Stormcrow-A. While the other two player characters were able to take down one member a piece. The two 100 ton machines lined up against each other for the right to challenge me for the Bloodname. They mutually killed eachother. One was head capped. The other was cored out. As the last man standing. I won the right to declare my own Bloodname. I owe it all to to the plucky StormCrow.

With Heatsinks on Omnis, I always think the "put the most that you can in the engine or standard 10", but just like the Warhawk, the Stormcrow is the exception to the rule in the opposite fashion. Great design, haven't had the chance to play it, though

Remember playing one once in college. Playing evil Clanner in a Binary vs Company(Invasion upgrade) urban battle. (Lt/med &med/hvy Stars vs 2 hvy & 1 aslt Lances) Came around a building and ran into an Atlas. Ultra AC20. Both hit. Both CT. Cored it in one round. Good memories.

The Stormcrow/Ryouken was the first Clan Omnimech I ever used., along with a Summoner/Thor. I used it against an Inner Sphere heavy lance. After the Summoner got destroyed early by a Gauss rifle shot to its head, the Stormcrow destroyed a Whitworth, Axman, and Marauder. She was finally destroyed by a Caesar in a close fight. The Stormcrow, in my opinion, is the best Clan mech in history.

The Stormcrow is my favorite Clan medium mech. I played the battletech video game with a build with one ER large laser on each arm and 2 medium pulses in each torso.

I just love the Stormcrow. Its odd in that its actually a nicely designed mech, especially unusual for the Clans. The clans commonly have either Walking Arsenals that shut down from overheating, run out of ammunition quickly, or are very fast but lightly armed(for Clans). The Stormcrows speed is faster than most Inner Sphere mechs, especially those of similar weight ranges. A lot of Inner Sphere Mediums are as slow as heavy or assault mechs. The Prime Stormcrow very well balanced in terms of heat, enabling it to run and fire continuously. Configuration D has 40 LRM tubes and some of the highest ammo counts on any battlemech. It carries 3 times as much ammunition as some dedicated missile boat mechs. Alternate Configuration I is more unbalanced, like its a pocket Timber Wolf.

Definitely not a mech to underestimate and yes, I agree that medium mechs are often considered to be the red headed stepchild but are definitely my favourite. Do one job, do it well and you can eliminate any shortfalls by adding other mechs to fill the gaps. A medium lance or star is terrifying in their capability and flexibility when used well. I'm definitely stoked for the Hunchback video and will be there. I'm also eagerly awaiting your videos for post War of Refusal, particularly the Cougar as I feel it is a much maligned beast for its lack of speed but a monster in truth when used well.

I really liked this mech in MW2. I'd throw an upgraded engine on it, some medium pulse lasers in the left and right torso, and added armour & heat sinks as I could fit them. That was it. It was so fast that I could simply avoid a lot of incoming fire. The weapons placed in the torso provided some versatility by being able to shoot over hilltops, and the arms acted as some extra armour while also stopping me from losing any firepower when I eventually lost an arm. I did a lot of hit-and-run tactics with it. It was a lot of fun to use.

Great video! I have only been exposed to the BattleTech cartoon, MechWarrior series of video games, and recently the HBS BattleTech video game. I have always liked the BattleTech universe, but I didn’t fall in love with it until I started playing the HBS game. These lore videos of yours have filled in so many blanks! This is such a cool universe and you do an excellent job of presenting it in an interesting and accessible way. You have earned a sub sir.

So far, no one has mentioned that Kai Allard-Liao piloted a Stormcrow B (Yes, he DID refer to it as a Stormcrow instead of a Ryoken [Note: That's Ree-oh-ken to be quick-pronounced without the double ee in Ree, and Ken as in Kenneth and not Kern as in Kernel.] ) and used it to thrash up Vlad Ward good good in his Timber Wolf during The Great Refusal in Strana Mechty. That's the prime example of what Big Red mentioned about Timber Wolf pilots being wary about the Stormcrow when they see one.

It's mechs like this is why I say on the invasion era. Clan mechs are capable of their inner sphere counterparts of a mech 15 tons higher and lighter than itself. Aside from actually have double the steel.

Great video, as always! The Stormcrow is pretty much the only Clanner mech that I call by its proper Clan name, partly out of respect for how good it is and partly because it just sounds cool to my ear. I'm glad that you mentioned the HAG variant, I just don't see a purpose for it when the B variant exists, but I get how new technologies work, people want to try them.

I always used to build the Stormcrow as a long range missile boat. One day in MWO, I decided to put it back to its Prime variant. And holy shit, there are few laser boats I love as much as this one. About the only change I make these days is swapping to Large Pulse Lasers when I feel like some disco. "Proving ballistics are often a poor choice for lighter chassis." The Ryoken A has been a go-to variant for me in MWLL when I want to threaten heavies but stay mobile, though it is a bit altered compared to the tabletop variant. In mwll it's got 5 DHS, 2 cMPLs in each arm, a Dual cSRM6+cLRM10 in the side torsos, and it has a GECM. It also has 1 free ammo tonnage slot that imo is best used for more SRMs as the cDSRM6 is firing 12 SRMs per shot.

Never heard of the Corvis before your video. So looked it up, of course it's from Tech readout 3060, not exactly the greatest tro ever minted, at least I didn't pay much attention to 3060. But looking at the record sheet, the Corvus is not a bad design. Okay yes granted it's slow, but it's got max armor, it's got a clan UAC-10, with a lot of ammo. So it's got the Firepower to do some damage, as long as it doesn't go toe-toe with something a lot bigger. Like the fluff says, this is a good support mech.

That Corvus is like a succession wars era trooper or bodyguard like a Wyvern or Vindicator. I still would take a Wyvern IIC over it for a 4-6-4 clan urban Garrison chassis.

The most notable thing about The Stormcrow is that it is one of those Clanner names for a very common 'mech that is actually good. Timeberwolf or (Ew)Ebon jaguar? Nah, MadCat and Cauldron Born. But the Stormcrow? That baby is still the Stormcrow, and man that baby is sexy.

I wonder if the writers of battletech who made this mech were aware of the story of the F-4 phantom. That plane began also began as a revision of lighter predecessor, in this case the F3H Demon. The F4 was away better and performed well when handled correctly (i.e. as taught by Topgun) and is even in service in Turkey , Greece, South Korean, and (surprisingly) Iran (was featured in a video touting their reinforced bunkers).

Every clanner is like "We know when the Stormcrow-" Or "We know how the Stormcrow-" But nobody wants to ask "How IS the Stormcrow" I guess empathy is dezgra.

Have to admit, I don't think I learned to appreciate the Stormcrow as much as other designs when I played Mechwarrior 2, I think it was because of having more interest in either the Nova(Black Hawk) that was lighter or the Summoner(Thor) which was slightly heavier. After watching this, it makes me want to go back and give that mech a second look, it looks like I really might have overlooked a good design.

In defense of the G variant, the HAG's max range is 20 hexes, C-ERML's is 15, while the C-UAC20's is 12. So, while not as potent as the B the G can outrange its cousin's main gun throughout the fight with proper positioning, leading to a rather one-sided affair. That's because when the C-ERMLs are hitting on 11-12, the Hag is hitting on 9-10, roughly 3-8% vs. 17-28%. Course C-LRMs are lighter and longer ranged.

Sure, but I think you'd just be better off with just something else. I love HAG's, but the HAG20 always seems to kinda lack in most of the designs in its.

The G is made for abusing range brackets and as a back up anti-air. Once you start facing aerospace and VTOL's (and VTOL BA) all of the sudden the lowly HAG 20 shines. The G is the second best design after the C for BV to effectiveness when used by someone who knows what they're doing.

@@BigRed40TECH but then you have to give up the lovely 5 pack of ER mediums which by themselves are more firepower than a lot of IS mechs can even dream of. The HAG on this one is the utility rather than the primary.

I love medium mechs too but prefer to play Inner Sphere. The medium is the workhorse of every army. A good mix of speed, protection and firepower makes them useful in any situation.

I have one in MW5 all pod space is filled with martel medium lasers and more double heat sinks. You can alpha 3 times without overheating.

Stormcrow is amazing on paper but in 3d its low cockpit and high mount arms and torso makes it extremely vulnerable to peeking and very easy to focus off components.
