In a nutshell, he is saying that religion originates from a "It feels good, so it must be true" mentality.

Ygor Nimoy and I think it feels good to begin with because we are often raised with that teaching so it continues to be the story running in the background of our minds.. we subconsciously as and consciously associate religion with good so then when we engage in religious rituals or follow religious dogma we feel good... Because that's what our story is telling us.

People don't usually kill eachother over religion. People usually kill eachother over property and look to religion for an excuse or justification. Even the crusades were more about property and territory than about religion. Those who fought in the crusades really had materialistic motivations and used religious excuses. So if anything, religion is a deterrent from meaningless war. People have to do convoluted mental gymnastics to make it accept or support unjust wars. This is not always easy to do. But it is much easier to make materialistic ideologies support unjust wars. Just look at the soviet union, Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Mao ze tung, etc.

Then, the crowd of ants goes around following these instructions, doing all sorts of crazy things like not eating sugar on Sunday and not mingling with other ants who do not follow the special instructions and spreading this information to other ants. This is even more ridiculous when you see humans behaving the same way.

Hahaa indeed! it's really absurd. and when you tell them (the humans) they always tend to get angry because appearantly you may not question it? While we don't actually care in what they believe. But one thing is sure, it's a man made construct and thus untrustworthy and it always benefits to someone at the top with power or control. But in essence it divides humans and limits the mind. The only cool thing about it is the epic dramatic art they make of it. But I do think a lot of people (can) never think in this scientific way and that religion recomforts them when presented with unanswerable questions.

I noticed something about my dreams. When something external such as a noise woke me up my brain tried to come up with an explanation by integrating that into the dream causing me to dream something that would end the dream. It means that when people claim that god has brought them happiness and joy as they worship together through activities and songs, it actually is because of the neurochemical process that is making them feel that way. More powerful than your perception of reality. If you believe something is absolutely real without a doubt it OBVIOUSLY is gonna reshape your reality depending on what you're believing in. This has been proven. The word delusion exists for a reason. I don't know why religious people don't come to conclusions like this. Its right in front of their face.

It is no coincidence that when normal people refuse to believe any make-believe fantasies, they are deemed to be enemies. It isn't just religion doing this, although because of the psychological traits involved, there is a deep underlying allegiance with it. They have the same methodology of establishing and maintaining allegiance as another category of abusers, narcissistic sociopaths. They both "love bomb" you at first, establish a dependency, an addiction. Then they start in about all the things you do wrong and just punishments but set themselves aside from judgment or even self-reflection. Even their inflictions of suffering upon you are deemed your fault. "Look what you made me do" applies as easily to deific abuses as it does to spousal abuses. They find Constitutive Others to scapegoat, to demonize. It gives them someone/something to project their own failings upon. The homophobe politician/pastor is the closeted homosexual. It gives them a way to deflect from their own egregious behaviors. It forces allegiances into zero-sum us-vs-them mindsets that continually drag everyone down to a lowest common denominator. They triangulate, getting acolytes, the gullible indoctrinated "true-believers," to compete for abasement, to see who is deemed "most worthy." Hence continuous fracturing of allegiances and "pragmatic" loyalties. 33,000+ denominations of Christianity, all of whom believe the others are fundamentally errant. Independence is subsumed by adherence to doctrine, by loyalty oaths and NDAs. You are born into sin, can never escape it, and are offered reprieve through allegiance, no one else can save someone so abhorrent and broken, through a renunciation of your every act of volition, your will. You eagerly swallow the blue pill, and vilify anyone who appears to have taken the red one. Authoritarianism rears its head; everyone deems they know best. Everyone eventually wants their own undisputed fiefdom, their cult following, as they believe and require more and more outlandish, more unreal and irrational things, as demonstrations of loyalty -- of faith. Narcissists set themselves up as gods on Earth, to anyone who is susceptible enough, and aren't we all when the indoctrination begins in the cradle. Religionists do the exact same.

Just because the brain made someone feel a certain way doesn't mean that doesn't have a cuase. Hence ill give you a story what is temperature. You could say temperature is temperature but if you really want to understand it better you would see temperature is atoms moving. Even that you could go back a few axioms. At some point you cant go back any further because your mind is limited. So this is not a proof but it is a statemnt. You cant denie fact of creator just because of what one thing the brain does. A few million axioms back could be G-D. Im saying a proof is something that can be shown from all cases. You again went based off of your belief. Feelings never should be used in debate. Use facts.

human response to the idea of God or praying is no argument as to whether God exists or not it is why it rarely is bought up as it brings no progress to the discussion, anything that results in a positive emotion does not determine whether the cause of it is real or not, if an athiest reacts the same when he tells himself God is not real does that mean God is not real and then you need to answer why out of everything God ends up becoming the reason out of the human brain

People have this strange belief that if something can be shown to be neurochemical, then it's "not real", which doesn't make sense. Religious belief is more complex than "it feels good"; if that were the sole motivator, then why would things like Hell be part of religions? Proving that religion makes people feel "good" at church shows very little about the origins of religion; being in a community, having a sense of connection to the transcendent, obviously make people feel good. That doesn't explain the peculiar, fascinating religious stories that have somehow survived for thousands of years.

Humans have a wonderfully developed brain capable of many attributes that may not be shared with other species. Evolution has gifted us with imagination. It is our wonderful imagination that conceived of the wheel, the iphone or travel into space. We can imagine the future, the best possible outcomes and the worst. Like every other creature we also possess the ability to feel fear. Imagination often amplifies our fears to horrific levels beyond reality, from which we seek relief. Imagination + Fear = Religion. Is the religious world suffering from mass mental illness?

I even feel like I've become a more caring ethical person now that my first duty is to the people around me and not a god that I can "just" ask for forgiveness. Knowing you only have one shot at life makes you value it more as well as the lives of others. Instead of seeing people as sinners and non-sinners I understand them as complex human beings with unique motivations, strengths and weaknesses. So freeing.

The point isn't that religion makes our brain feel good therefore we made religion. Admiring nature makes us feel good but we didn't invent nature. The point is that the warm feeling you get when you receive the Eucharist sometimes or whatever it is that you do in your religion - it's literally all in your head. It's something people of every religion ever have experienced and cherish. Even the many Buddhists who do not believe in a god experience that feeling. Therefore we must assume that either there is no god that wants us to seek him specifically out in religion (lest he doesn't care in which way we do so which is contrary to the beliefs of essentially every religion ever) or there is no god or there is a god and he has just given up on us.

Religion always made me feel horrible like god just didn't want me involved. No matter how hard I tried to believe no matter how many times I read the bible no matter how many times I begged him to fill me with the holy spirit nothing ever happened. I knew from a young age if god is really all knowing all powerful was everywhere all the time, how could he watch as people are murdered, raped, tortured, starved to death, and the countless other atrocities that happen everyday. If you believe there is a all powerful god like I tried to, you realize he is watching all of this happen and doing absolutely nothing, even though he has the power to do anything. As I got older I started to think about the fact that he supposedly has this master plan and that's why he doesn't intervene, but if that was true how could we have free will if everything is set in motion by god then he knew before I was ever born every single decision I would ever make. Just like he knew everything serial killers, rapist, and pedophiles would do and instead of not creating them or changing their brain structure he just let it all happen. Dropping nukes on Japanese cities, the nazi, Stalin. I just can't see how anyone could worship such a being. I inevitably came to the conclusion that its all a giant scam that has bin wildly successful. Most people that can't let go of the idea of eternal life, and eternal happiness choose to either ignore these obvious realities or they simply blame the devil. Which basically was created by god and using the bibles own logic god knew he would create the devil and all the bad that came with that which in my mind leaves god guilty of the worst decisions ever made. So how can he be some perfect being when everything we know of in the entire universe is far from perfect even our seemingly perfect planet that could be completely inhabitable in an instant if one of those giant rocks traveling through space happens to be on a collision course with earth.

Firstly, religion is more than just the activity of congregating with fellow believers and so to minimize it to the sensations of song and dance here is vastly overlooking the subject. Secondly, you can filter everything down to mere neurochemical reactions as that is ultimately what provides us with the sensations we feel for anything. This really is nothing more than a very surface-level attempt to opposing religion.

'Religion is the opium of the people'-Marx. Goes well with the serotonin argument. The example of the mass and group euphoria also reminds me of Carl Jung's statement that the self experiences a heightened attachment with the group and experiences euphoria when in mass celebrations, and he goes on to point out how this is like an addiction. In the contemporary scenario though, I think going to a music concert gives you a similar experience and is much more sensible. The impulse is the same, but at least we're not bullshitting ourselves with deeming fantasies as being real, and plus are talking about each other's experiences and not those of made-up characters that are better than and above us in terms of morality and power.

that is, being solely preoccupied with material things (especially gains of such), and having no regard for immaterial ones (or gains of such). like doing a good deed to acquire something in return, and not for the good of the deed. or supporting a political policy solely for monetary gains. or someone funding research for the resulting technology and not for the acquisition of knowledge. or merely judging material possessions as the sole determinant of a good life.

Why do people refer to the brain in a third person if we ARE our brain.....? :/

People will always find a reason to believe in something if you take away something they believe in away from them. We are too intelligent for our good and can’t believe we have no purpose in the universe.

"Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." - Matthew 16:24 Following Jesus is not comfortable. Following Jesus convicts us of our sins. If we just wanted to feel good, we'd just give into our flesh and deny Christ as our Savior, and King, and to that I say, no thank you.

@@BlacksmithTWD I'll tell you how I know. Too many wars and too many people have died in the name of some god or other. Millions and millions on both sides of all wars. They all look up and pray that they'll through it all without getting hurt.

@@BlacksmithTWD Even Hitler's army buckles had "With God on our side" on them. We all did. Every bloody one of did. All sides in all wars go to fight saying and believing they have their god on their side. They also believe they will win because of it. They see their best friends die and believe they've gone to heaven because if they think otherwise they wouldn't fight. They would run away knowing that they mgith be the next to rot in the next hole in the ground. No one wants to belive that. It's the man at the top that wants the power, not the mug that fights. He's the idiot that's going to get killed.

Addiction and compulsiveness is a rewarded system to ultimately kick in boosters like serotonin. We rewired our own brains belief systems through our self induced positive emotional reinforcements in order to actually tap into our own feel good resources-we are wired for a feel-good God! We searched outside of us to find good. Story telling needed conflict and this brought us fame, power, control and rulers. It’s all a self made manifestation within us to gather up clans of like minds to not feel so desperately alone. Power, control, intimidation, authority and righteousness is the negative and direct opposite rewound feedback loop of our own fear factoring-in that systematically arose from our own self expansion through disillusionments, fantasy, hypothesizing, in-depth self discovering, experimenting, learning; all that steered us into internalizing for which resulted in our own negativity, fear and self doubt. We realized that we needed proof of our own making and story but our addictions and self medicating desired and required more satiation. Sinister mechanisms formed through monetary gain; ie. The king on the hill syndrome. Increasing our fear factor through divide, kill, mayhem and concur. Good vs evil and which will prevail? God knows-we know it’s self sabotage till the end. Unless we can find balance, and agree that we are all intrinsically wired for self awareness through discovery. ETA🌹
