Big Tractor Power follows the process of filling a Harvestore silo with corn silage using dump trucks. This video features chopping corn with a John Deere 7230R tractor, John Deere 3975 forage harvester, Dion F64 rotary corn head and a United Farm Tools 4205 Dump Wagon. Watch the UFT Dump Wagon unload 8 tons of silage into International Dump trucks. See the corn hauled to the silo where a Balers 1610 silage table unloads the dump trucks and fills the silo through a New Holland F62B forage blower. When the 90 ft Harvestore is full the video showers how the equipment is moved from one silo to the next.

Don't get too hung up on the proper name of the blue silo. At 20:00 you can see that blue tube has been converted to a top unloader style anyway! Nice video as always, Matt

I've done custom silo filling for a number of years, and it's amazing that you can go from an 80' to a 100' silo and if you your blower has some wear on it and isn't set up correctly it will not blow up that extra 20' until you set it up properly.

Yes, I enjoyed watching this video. It was almost easy for the guys to attend those machines and operate them, of course someone like me who only knows the 'old fashioned' ways.....would be lost. Did they say how much those Harvestore's will hold? That would be interesting to hear about. Isn't there something on the market now that would allow them to harvest more rows at a time than just the few that that chopper will? Eight tons of that bright green silage must be quite heavy, very lucky cows to have such silage and the amount that they put into the silos..I just can't get my mind to picture it all...Anyhow...I wish God's blessings on this farm and all the workers there.

I like finding different farms. I filmed three pull types in corn this summer. One had a bunker, one an ag bag and this one a silo.

Nice video! There are a few dairy farmers around these parts that still use a silo just like the one in the video, but very few. Most have gone to a silage pile.

bigtractorpower Yes it sure is! It’s nice in the dead of Winter when it -40 C or -40 F it’s the same, to have fresh green silage inside the barn! Providing it all works properly.

Given the chute on the side of the Harvestores, these blue silos have been converted over to top unloaders like your typical upright silos. While not as convenient filling and unloading as bottom Harvestores unloaders, top silo unloaders are easier and cheaper to maintain.

When you open the door at the bottom to feed out you better have your rain suit on. Looks pretty green to be going into a harvestore, but we've done it before as well .

The corn was at 65%. No doubt there was some juice leaking out but it was ready to chop. This was filmed a few weeks ago.

Its also a good idea since you dont need multiple expensive chopper boxes. We are looking to get one as well since it doesnt create a choke point around the blower

I find the backing up interesting. Where I grew up in NY there was allot of dairy and farms with dump wagons pullled the trucks in forward to the dump wagon. I filmed at three farms with dump wagons this summer in corn and they all backed the trucks in. One farm ran semis. It would be neat to here from other farmers if they back in or pull forward. Is it difficult or easy to unload from the top of the concrete silo I've not had the opportunity to see them unload only seen and climbed the a.o. Smith harvesters.

BTP, Do Harvestore Silos store silage as well as piling in a cement bunk and compressing it then covering it with a tarp? I'm wondering how much oxygen still gets to the silage in the silo.

The Harvestore is air tight. But there might be a little bit of spoiled

@@MrMagnum7220 i would guess its expencive if you say, fill the silo without checking that the outload sysstem is in good shape and plased in right plase before filling it. BY RIGHT PLASE I MEAN, line up the chain bars in a straight line so you can jack it out if the engine+gearbox cant start the chains first time after filling, becouse the weight of the silage blocks it from starting properly even if its nothing wong. if you didnt do that, it can be a LONG JOB DIGGING OUT THE SILO BY HAND. hehe

I noticed the blower tube is going into the side of the Harvestore instead of the very top. Why is that? I used to have a dairy farm with the Harvestore system and am quite familiar with it but this is the first time I’ve seen it going into the side near the top like this.

This Harvestore has been converted to unload from the top like a traditional silo.

It kinda looks like that 2019 Dion 2430 FH is like a green version of their own F-41 FH or is it a newer version?

Yes it is a Stinger F41 in green and silver.

In my opinion, New Holland makes one of the best silage blowers out there. I had a NH40 1000rpm with the Whirl-a-Feed and it was a beast at blowing silage. I usually had a IHC 706 on it and it gave it a pretty good load. I assume that F62B blower is 540 rpm?? Is that correct? I also assume the diameter of the blower is 62" which would lend it to a 540 rpm? Just a little bit of info that is interesting to know.....

Does that dumpster thing have to be hooked to a tractor, could it dump i to the dump trailor with out being hooked if i had a hydraulic pump, basically would it tip over?

The Balzer silo loader runs off the tractors hydraulics and feeds the silo blower run by the tractors pto.

Muscle Tractor Fan actually if I’m not mistaken I thought I saw in one of the shots from the back, these harvestores look like they may have been converted to top unloaders at some point. There for a long time harvestore ‘s weakness was the slow unloaders. So some guys converted their bottom unloading silos into top unloaders. I think that’s what they may have done on this farm.

Noticed at about 3:15 the chute up the sides. Had a neighbor convert 2 to top unloaded. Tripods were mounted on top and doors cut in the side. He also converted one to a Big Jim unloaded that formed a hole up the middle as you filled the silo. When you unloaded an auger brought the feed to the hole to a conveyor in the bottom. Original Goliath bottom unloaded were a nightmare!!

Yes but it’s chopped into feed and put in the silo where the grain corn seed the cob put back in the field.

I'm sure I wasn't seeing things where it looked like they pulled the pipe off the goose neck on top and notched a hole in the silo to fill into. I'm guessing the breather bags must be outside the silo then. Does that hole seal up air tight? Yea it's there at the 20 minute mark. There is no way that is air tight unless they some how seal that hole.

Horsepower equals speed, however I grew up when one row corn choppers were the norm. This does not impress me.

I grew up near 7 dairy farms in the late 70’s and early 80’s. One of those farms had a one row Hesston pull type. Another small one had a 3pt mounted New Holland 707 with a one row head. They chopped and filled the wagon and drove straight to the silo and unloaded and right back to chop again. For the small farm it was handy to allow one person to chop and never unhook a wagon. I wish I could go back and film those farms with. Digital camera to share the history and those machines. 2018 was the last year John Deere manufactured a pull type chopper. Getting to film this video was a chance to share this type of 3 row tractor powered machine before it is gone.

What type of storage is the best

I think it’s a preference thing. A silo takes up little land for storage where a bunk or bag takes up land space crops could be raised on. A silo takes maintenance. A bunk is fast. Dump and go. It will have some spoilage. A bag wraps the crop up tight but makes lots of plastic litter feeding out and takes up space. Each one works well in its own way but has down sides too.

I suppose this setup would be a whole lot less of a capital expenditure than the purchase of a self-propelled forage harvester.

Yes. A pull type operation is normally chopping about 150 acres. A self propelled is better justified on 150 acres and up.

Just a tip, when u introduce a machine and it's a mouthful, avoid repeating the same mouthful as that sounds kind of redundant. Awesome footage tho. Makes me wanna quit my job and go back to Agri.🤔

The corn is 20 inch rows. The header is set to cut a standard three 30 inch rows. I for got to mention this was a narrow row corn field. I have filmed the 4 row 30 inch Dion. It is the model F61. You can see the F61 in this video m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZ6SlrOoubGupoE.html

I normally do not show the operator. It is not a legal issue. It is a space issue. There is not enough room in the cab. I am sitting in the buddy seat right next to the person driving. The camera would be just inches from their face. So I just alwAys film over their head. I try to talk to the operator about the function of the machine.

That corn looks awful green for silage. We wait until the corn is about half brown. You get a lot more grain per fodder then and don't have water pooling up.

I agree on chopping at the right time. When this was filmed some farms where already shelling corn. It was time to chop. Also many farms here in Kentucky plant a second crop of sorghum behind chop corn so it is important to clear the field in order to chop the sorghum by Thanksgiving.

It is amazing how things are done in different areas. Around here, the couple of guys that still do silage do it in the later part of August, then corn picking in September, and soybean combining and wheat planting in October. But this year, I only know of one field of beans that has been combined so far. I checked mine at home and the stocks are still tough and the beans about 19%. It is supposed to rain again Tuesday afternoon.
