Bike locks need to be heavy duty and secure enough to prevent your bike from being stolen. At the same time, they need to be lightweight enough for you to take your locks with your during your rides, so you can actually lock up your bike. Here's the lightest, secure bike lock and what bike lock security ratings actually mean.

Listen, the surefire method of never having your bike stolen is to park your bike as close to an e-bike as possible because that’s what the thieves want.

I would second this were it not for the fact that they’ll use the same tools and machines to steal your bike because of proximity.

Well if I was a thief a regular bike is easier to pickup and put in a truck but yeah ebikes are more desirable also with ebikes remove the battery

If you lock a bike up in public on a regular basis, don’t ride anything you can’t replace! Camouflage is a decent tactic, make your bike look beat up, remove branding, add tape and stickers to make unrecognizable as a nice bike. Zach’s bike is too nice to leave locked up for very long, but as a smaller brand may not be as recognizable. If a professional thief wants your bike, no lock is unbeatable. Good video, it’s sad bikes are under such threat.

The litelock and hiplock pretty much are unbeatable. Kryptonite and Abus ULocks aren't great in big cities where you might find a thief with a grinder. Everywhere else you will probably be fine.

This is really dumb advice lmao. Put a sticker on it yeah that’s gonna do anything…. Even the cheapest wheel can be sold for $20, they’re looking for their next drug fix, I don’t think they’re gonna be picky .

Zach's bike is only going to appeal to a very small subset of thieves. They'd have to know what it is and how much it cost to even be interested in it. To the average person or thief it barely looks like a bike. Single speed, brakeless sometimes, no suspension. It didn't look like something they're going to be able to sell quickly. And if the average bike thief tries to ride off on it they'll break their face the first time they have to stop.

I got into fixed gear, bike commuting and always carrying two locks because of you. I’ve never gotten my bike OR WHEELS stolen in Mexico City, which is something to be proud of I guess.

When I lockup in public, its next to the $2k and up bikes. I frequently use the bikeshare that connects my city to the capital of our state--mostly to never be afraid my baby will get stolen when I'm out and about. My rule about bike locks is that I spend about 10% of the cost of the bike--$40 for a $400 bike, $100 for a $1k bike, etc.

hey a had a question. I bought a second hand fixed gear a few days ago a had it for 30€ and the reparations and custom a made on it costed me 24€ , so 54€ in total. It was in perfect condition putting aside some little scratchs and the rear wheel bearing i had to change. It is a margot cycling "fixie" do you think it was worth my money ?

I recently got into this whole fixed gear thing and I'm pretty much a noob at all this since I never really had a lot of money to buy bikes, so I always had very old, rusty, shitty ones. Now I bought a bike that looked good, is relatively light and not too expensive since I'm still in collage, not supported by anyone, paying everything myself and working way too much for a shitty loan. So I got myself a fixie inc. I couldn't really find any reviews about it so I was wondering wether you knew them and what you think of them? (I haven't gotten it yet, since I ordered it online so idk myself and I invested some time in researching stuff that's good to know to start out with this whole thing and I did everything right with the size stuff and so on. So hopefully ordering online wasn't too bad.)

Honestly in a place like Texas id feel fairly safe about my bike not being stolen because the thieves are scared there. But in any of the more soft on crime areas nah forget it. Basically if the usual response to theft isn't the thief being pummeled or scared off. Then I'm worried

Litelock X3 is the way to go. The hiplock is too small, though REI carries them. Any Kryptonite can be cut through in under a minute. The weakest Kryptonite is only slightly worst than the thickest and is a 1/3 of the weight.

Zack you first mentioned how the safest way to secure a bike when needed is to make your bike not worth a criminals time, effort and risk. Your flexibility lock looks easy to break even if it's not. I think that could attract attention in itself. The worse u lock would make me as a criminal think that bikes well locked up I'm not going to wipe out an angle grinder to try. -I mean all of this in the nicest way possible. I just feel the illusion of hard to steal holds a high value

I use a kryptonite lock for rear wheel and frame with a cable that loops round the front wheel, and my bike is never out of my line of sight for more than 15 minutes at a time unless im at work, where it is in a secure lot. 2 locks would be better, but the weight saving is why i make the compromise

In the U.K., hooded machete motorbike riders are targeting cyclists, especially around London. This type of targeted violence and theft is increasing against cyclists. The criminals are getting really brazen without fear of getting caught or arrest. It’s getting scary to be a cyclist. There is little risk of getting caught or actual punishment, because in the U.K., sadly along of the general public have an ideological hate of cyclists that is getting fuel by social media and some media outlets.

I've had trouble with components get stolen. If your in a high traffic area I recommend putting clear shoe goo into the hex key holes. Hasn't failed me yet. If you need to adjust seat height or take off handlebars then just use a pin or sharp object to take out the dried shoe goo.

don't forget to never lock your bike up to something easier to cut than your lock. i knew people who would use a five-star lock to secure their bike to a sign pole or wrought-iron railing, only to come out and find the railing/pole cut through, and their bike and lock missing. a profesh thief will 100% sawzall through a rail, throw your bike in a van, and deal with the more laborious task of cutting the u-lock in a remote location. if i can't find a proper bike rack, i won't lock to it.

Hi Zach, love ur content. 🔥 Have you considered doing a video on, creative ways to carry heavy locks? I commute with my bike daily, and having to figure out how to carry my 1kg Abus chain lock is a constant struggle. 💀 I've seen people wear thier lock like a belt, but I dont think that's very comfortable.
