Bilbo's Patchwork Housecoat from The Hobbit: One Robe To Rule Them All

The quest for the ultimate in fantasy-bounding lounge wear and a desire to use only recycled and repurposed textiles resulted in a three month long creation process that gave me a fabulous new patchwork robe and a new sense of appreciation for the community of my childhood home.
While this didn’t start out as a nostalgic project, that’s certainly what it ended up being, from making a garment based on a story that was read to me as a child from the books gifted to me by my uncle, to the heirloom sewing machine that I learned to sew on, in the city and house that I grew up in, this was both a literal and metaphorical coming home… and I ended up with a super comfortable robe with a Twirl Factor that is off the charts!
Come with me as I recreate Bilbo’s Robe from “The Hobbit” (I don’t dare say “Lord of the Rings”, lest the Tom Bombadil gang comes for me). If this project inspired you to create your own version, or even to tackle a similar project - maybe a different patchwork or quilted garment from recycled materials - please be sure to find me on social media (Instagram is perhaps the easiest way to contact me) and let me know, I love seeing other people’s works!
The patten for the patchwork squares was created by me, to give the illusion of randomness, and I think it worked very well. The patchwork doesn't seem to have a discernible pattern, yet I didn't loose my mind trying to sew it together. The pattern is available for purchase from my KoFi store (ko-fi.com/s/c7b0f2c44e), along with a little instructional PDF with some suggested assembly methods and techniques.

I must say, I started watching this video expecting a pretty impressive patchwork robe. I did not expect the epic video editing, grandiose music, nor the sheer volume of puns and quotes! You should be seriously proud of yourself for this project!

Everything about this project makes my heart sing! I'm a quilter and a costumer, so I have buckets of leftover fabric scraps. This is something I just have to do! I might also make one for my husband, who is the real JRR Tolkein fan, and who has said, "There is nothing nicer than a home made quilt."

Everything about this project is delightful… from sourcing the fabric, to the hours and hours of stitching on a vintage friend, the deliberate use of Tolkien quotes... right down to the barefoot reveal. 😊 And now I have apparently added, "Sew my husband the Tolkien nerd a Bilbo robe" to my very long project queue!

As soon as I caught the mere barest glimpse of this gloriously colorful, wonderful fabric, my eyes widened, and it seemed as if the universe itself was calling down to me: 'You must make a patchwork coat.'

I feel like Tolkien himself would have loved this project and video. You put so much care and thought into every step of not just the coat, but the video itself! The music, editing, prose-like narration full of Tolkien like language, perfection! It makes me want to make a similar coat... but all those squares would give me nightmares.

This is not just a tutorial on how to sew a patchwork robe. You have created a real movie with music and different fabrics in the style of the Hobbit movie. This is the true spirit of fairy tales and magic. Thank you very much! 🧙‍♀🌟💖

This video. Holy Hannah. Not only was the sewing great, but the STORY, the EDITING, the MUSIC, the CORGI...all of it's literally making me cry a bit from joy, it's so good. This video did NOT need to be so epic, but by gum, you did it anyway. I came to your playlist for another vid of yours, glad I clicked on this.

This is not only a stash buster project for an avid quilter. But, it is a stash buster project for a small village! Well done, damsel!

Another Shannon here, 🙋‍♀️, pippins scarf has been living rent free in my brain since the movies came out; it has always been my desire to recreate his scarf as screen accurate as possible. I have finally reached a skill level as a knitter that i feel competent enough to tackle it. This past summer i found fiber that very closely matches the contrast colors, and is being spun up by my best friend, and i will spend this Christmas break meticulously creating the pattern. ❤

What an absolute masterpiece! Two of them....the robe and the video. The music was enchanting, the storytelling mesmerizing, and the village of fellow crafters and friends who donated was so heartwarming. Your robe is a treasure....absolutely beautiful and fascinating.
