Let's take a look inside a bilge pump and see how it's put together.
This is a 1500GPH 12 volt bilge pump that had a crack in the case so I decided to have a look inside. It's pretty cool how it all works inside!

Legend been looking for this exact video. I dont think these pump can stay submersed mine failed shortly after the timer failed keeping it submersed. I wonder if epoxying one more shaft seal inside the motor housing and siliconing the wires would stop all water ingress??

Ah one thought i just had was drill a hole in the top and squirt in maybe 15-30ml of outboard gear oil to keep positive pressure and it will absorb any moisture that gets in just like in an outboard leg. That would require less trouble than sourcing a seal to spec. And possible work even better

I think the brushes on the motor might take issue with motor oil touching them. But I wonder if you used dielectric grease if that would perform the same purpose. I've actually had these bilge pumps last a long time in the past, but I suspect they do have a limited life in part due to water getting past the seal. I might have to run one for a year and then take it apart to check for any water inside... If the seal remains good and it's just the brushes that wear out, I wonder how difficult it would be to swap in a brushless motor into the same case... If you try using oil, maybe drill the hole for it down the side of the motor near the bottom, that way it would avoid the brushes entirely at the top end of the motor. You would really just need a small amount to pool up down near the seal. Let us know how your experiments turn out! I plan to dig into this further over the next year, but it may be a while until I get the chance.

@UtmostOutdoors thanks for responding and sharing. The brushes last usually a thousand plus (usually 1-3000) hours depending on the load or head height and battery voltage as well as Intermittent on and off wears out brushes alot faster. They are easily replaced and many brushes are for sale online. I agree with what you said about the oil causing increased wear on the brushes. A packing of grease like you said is probably the best method by far. Possible even with tube silicone creating a shaft seal and surrounding that by grease I think that would stop alot of water ingress as well as siliconing the input wires heavily, as well as greasing or silicone the base gasket below the impeller housing. These pumps are incredibly efficient for the size and power, especially the larger ones 3700gph and 4700. If we can stop water ingress and have replacement brushes for 1$ a pair these pumps will last forever. I've found some great information about coating impellers with epoxy. It's helps tremendously with longevity and durability to particles and cavitation especially. I'm going try epoxy coating the impeller mine keep wearing down with pine needles and leaves chewing away as it spins

@@UtmostOutdoors I don't think the pumps are designed to stay submerged like a pond pump that is sealed in epoxy
