Bilge Pump Installation: Make Your Boat Stay Afloat!

When water gets into the lowest part of your boat, called the bilge, you need to be able to clear it out. for this you use bilge pumps. In this video we look at two different types of pump and install them in two separated bilge compartments

Excellent work John, a keen follower of your series. Have you considered rust treating old components before they go back in (eg old bilge pump motor)? I use Bilt Hamber Oxy Gel (or Jenolite equiv) and it not only cleans up old surface rust but stabilises the surface to give a new lease of life so easily painted over with some Jenolite Directorust paint to give more protection and a newly restored look.

I have used Vactan before, and one thing that needs converting sooner rather than later is the iron part of the keel. Haven't used the products you've mentioned here Colin, but have looked them up and might give them a go. Cheers.

Nice video. I had that Whale pump in my last boat and had to replace it as the impeller shaft sheared. Had bo choice but to get another due to very shallow bilge. My new boat only has a manual bilge pump and i want to fit and electric one. The pump mounted out of the water with a strum box looks like a much nicer solution!

No question that the pump out of the water is a better solution - but separate float switches are usually mechanical in some way and IMHO not as reliable and don't have the 'smart' delay features. Plus the total cost is about three times that of the integral unit. Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching.

No. The other boat 'Confidence' was sold before I bought this one.

Thanks for your quick rely ! I know time is scarce and you are busy man but I would love to know why you sold a very pretty ready and able to sail yacht for a project boat? Not a criticism in the slightest, I think that your new boat is beautiful and full of potential. I am just curious what tipped that balance for you. I suppose the real reason for asking is I am considering doing the same myself .... @@confidencesailing

Ah. That would be because I only owned half of it, and the person who owned the other half didn't want to come sailing with me anymore.
