Stuart and Christine Lee have a gem hiding in New Zealand. Their steam launch 'Kelly Maree' was a project COVID helped complete, and to a very high standard at that.
'Kelly Maree' consists of a 23' Elliott Bay fantail hull, and York 3+5-1/4x3-3/4" compound steam engine castings from Elliott Bay Steam Launch Company, a vertical firetube boiler, and loads of gorgeous woodwork.
Stuart acquired 'Kelly Maree' as a project that unfortunately the previous owner was not able to see to completion. Largely unfinished, Stuart saw to getting her complete and on the water during the COVID pandemic. With guidance from the collective steam masters of New Zealand, and final machining of the engine by his friend at WM Ross Engineering, 'Kelly Maree' was completed and in the water in a relatively short time.
My father and I were very graciously hosted by Stuart and Christine, providing electrical hookup for our camper van and an amazing dinner. Unfortunately when we visited we had been overly ambitious on our itinerary, so we did not have time to go for a ride ourselves on 'Kelly Maree'. Luckily for your viewing pleasure we have footage and photos of her under way filmed and provided by Stuart and Christine Lee, Steve McClune and Daniel Hicks.
Again, I cannot say enough about the spirit, kindness, and ingenuity of the kiwis.
Thank you Stuart and Christine for sharing your wonderful boat and home with us!
