A video to show the lighting up of Consuta's loco boiler, then oiling the DesVignes engine and warming through.
Shot on a chilly damp day at the end of the season just before hauling out for the winter, so please excuse the state of the boat ;-)
The charitable trust that runs Consuta has recently (2017-2018) been awarded Heritage Lottery Funding to construct and install a much lighter boiler more akin to what she would have been fitted with when first built.
The new boiler will allow her boiler casing to be lowered to it's original form, help her to perform better and she'll be easier to steam too, so all for the good.
For more info please check out the Consuta Trust website: www.Consuta.org.uk

This man loves this engine. Every part is his next of kin. He is a patient and loving father to gears, links, valves, pipes and gauges. It responds to his every touch as he wakens it, until it comes to life. He will attend to its every need until he is not able to bring it to life ever again. Sad, as many true love stories are.

I go for a trip at any opportunity! I went out on Osprey (double expansion, 30" prop) mid-September; a beautiful sunny afternoon on Windermere just gently pottering along. A lovely boat, very nicely maintained, great crew. (2)

Damn guys! Class!))) Where did you get such a cool thing? I myself live on the river, well, not really, the boat is on the river, I spend 2 weeks regularly in the summer with my family on the river, such or such a boat would be just right! You don’t have enough gasoline, but we have a forest edge! Russia, the city of Kirov, the Vyatka river.

Content is excellent. Now you need to do it again in 4K with a gimbal camera and not in interlaced mode. Interlacing is such a pain. A bit of editing to cut out things like "let me know when you're filming" would help, too. Consuta is such a delight.

How do you clean the fire box on that?
@arlette31
@arlette31 4 жыл бұрын
During the steaming season we just rake the ash through the grate, anything still well formed and too big to drop through the small gaps gets re-burnt. The ash from the ashpan gets used to fill in potholes in the car park. Out of season the grate is lifted out and the firebox is given a quick wire brushing and is just left over winter until next season.

In the video we are on the lake at Beale Park, Lower Basildon, Pangbourne (UK). The lake is a man made one, the result of grave extraction in the 1980's. Around the early 2000's a cut was dug out to allow navigation to and from the River Thames.

No water tank needed. All the water for the boiler comes from what she's sitting on, as the Thames is fresh water.

Fascinating piece of machinery but the camera work is terrible. It is a shame to put in the time and effort to make the video and have it turn out this bad when learning how to properly operate a camera and edit the raw footage would have made it so much better. Hope future videos are easier to watch.

@arlette31
@arlette31 4 жыл бұрын
No trash goes overboard. I think what you are referring to is clinker (aka rock). The lake the boat is on here was made by extracting thousands of tons of gravel (aka rock), so throwing a few lumps back is not going to make any difference in the grand scheme of things.

I very much do not condone littering. Stop throwing your garbage into the river.
@arlette31
@arlette31 4 жыл бұрын
Your use of the word garbage is incorrect, we don't throw 'garbage' overboard. Only the odd couple of bits of clinker (aka rock) go overboard into what is an old gravel (aka rock) workings pit. Note: we're not on the River here it is a man made lake made by extracting thousands of tons of rock & putting a few small bits of rock back really makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.
