Bill Adam teaches the Ready Approach to me "dB"
William Alexander "Bill" Adam (October 21, 1917 - November 25, 2013) was an American trumpeter, respected pedagogue, and Professor Emeritus at Indiana University. He was highly analytical as a teacher, but always avoided discussing the mechanical aspects of trumpet playing with a student. Instead he "taught" by demonstration and by explanation in terms of sound. In his own words, "If your mind leaves the sound of the horn, obstacles will appear.

These are great Bill Adam videos, very helpful. Is there anywhere we’re we could find the whole thing perhaps? Also, when were these recorded?

DB wouldn't you say Adam's philosophy was a lot like prof Fielder's? Idk if you studied with Fielder but I know you know guys who did.

Hey Austin I studied with Prof. I'm not sure what he taught others but what he taught me was coming from the Chicago Symphony school. I would say that their methods are different

Hello ! great video thanks ! ! I have a rather foolish and simple question : are we supposed to buzz without the upper and lower teeth touching each other at all, or do they have the right to be in contact just slightly, especially as we go up in the register ? I try to keep them really apart but at some point it gets complicated, while letting them touch each other slightly doesn't seem to have an impact on how I manage my chop, lips, and tongue. And helps hit higher notes with more precision. Any opinion y'all ?

damn no responses 😝 I've recently started getting stronger and unlocking some upper register. the increase in strength has come along with shifts in where the "weight" is on my chops, and throughout where I recruit the most muscle support from in my face, jaw, and neck. The shift has also included more of a closed jaw (and an overall "grumpy grampa" face setup that's borderline under-bitey). I now sometimes struggle with clacking my teeth together when simply trying to make vibrato on a middle-range note. I think the trick is finding that just right configuration which probably IS rather closed-jawed, however you'll have to back off to the point that you CAN. Find a balance between grip/control and having a singing/loud tone which usually does require opening up the lower lip/jaw a bit even if you're making an underbitey face at the same time. Kind of awkward, but my $0.02.

dB here hope you’re well. All I can tell you is what works for me. My teeth never touch each other. My corners are always firm and to move through the registers air flow and tongue level are essential for me. I’m always thinking flow, strong corners and tongue level. I try not to get too fixated on chops because my main focus is making music and creating. Again this is what works for me, if you don’t agree with it, don’t try it. Love and Respect to you from dB.
