At Stanford's 123rd Commencement, Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, urged graduates to change the world through optimism and empathy. Truly connect with the poor and sick, they advised, and channel those experiences into making the world a better place.

Thank you for posting this video. I saw the Commencement in person at Stanford's Stadium. It was an excellent joint presentation by Bill and Melinda Gates. Melinda said how she was powerless in certain situations to help some people who were desperately in need of help. She said that empathy is saying that could be me. Both of them said that we should be compassionate toward others. I want to thank Bill and Melinda Gates for coming and speak at that commencement.

The funny thing is that when he had his ideas for Microsoft and was trying to implement them, most of those administrators and students would have ridiculed him and made fun of him and his idea, likely telling him he can't make it. Maybe only a handful of truly succesful minded individuals like himself saw that he had potential. Now that he made it everyone is bowing down to him like he is a messiah and hes making money off of them, so he has the last laugh. What beautiful revenge success is.

Bill and Melinda are so humble! I wish the little politicians from all over the world learn something from them. That will eliminate half the poverty. Many of these countries have enough land and wealth, but a few have grabbed them all and want to keep it that way.

Fascinating commencement speech by Bill and Melinda Gates at Stanford. What does Experience of Suffering, Heart Break, Luck, Empathy, Optimism and Innovation lead to? You have to view the speech to figure out yourself. Keep some tissues handy, just in case. Melinda Gates speaks from her heart, and displays passion and energy of a determined woman who wants to change the world, one poor child and one deprived woman at a time. Bill Gates is the voice of reason and talks about how technology and innovation must help everyone, not just the rich.

USA people have a naive point of view of poverty, but I'm glad people like Bill and Melinda have an active social awareness. However you don't need to be a millionaire to catalyze social change, every body with creativity can do it (and everybody can be creative) not only Stanford Students. I think the work's biggest problems invites any idea from multiple disciplines, universities, nationalities and age. You don't need to be a computer scientist. Also artist, designers, musicians, sociologist are welcome. What ever passion you have, can contribute to solve the World's biggest problems. No matter how small is your action, because size doesn't matter but is intention, The world is full of unexpected and surpising results.

I hope someone will have Bill read this. It's very important. The 18:30 speech about the Optimist vs Pessimists is very disturbing. In this part of the speech, Bill defines Pessimists as people who complain about inequities. Bill seems to suggest that if the optimists pay attention to the "pessimists", that will hold back Innovations. He goes on to suggest, in a coded way, it's okay to ignore inequalities, because the exclusive optimists (i.e. Stanford Graduates) will create innovations beneficial to everyone, including the poor excluded complainers. Obviously, Bill edited his speech at 18:30. Even Melinda grimaced during that part of the speech.

I wonder when we will realise that we do not only mechanical engineers or programmers etc but social engineers as well. We have evolved technology at a high level yet we ignore the social-cultural evolution. The world needs more social engineering, social problems can be solved if humanity and universities invest in people to educate on this subject. The word is not only bits and bytes. Problems that need more investment for future generations: Pure and cheap Energy, Solving mortality-health problems, Space exploration, Social-city structure, Global Educational system. Best wishes for the 2014 graduates!

Gates is a president without the title. He's independently trying to do what one would try to. Doing better than Obama, but he also doesn't have to deal with trivial things as a president would. So, it makes sense despite the good things Obama has done.

That's great that they are donating so much time, effort, and resources to help impoverished people around the world. But we don't need to go to India and Africa to help impoverished people, I've seen a lot of homeless people here in the Phoenix, AZ area. If we can't even help our own people right here in America, how can we expect to help the rest of the world?

One of the most beneficial things wealthy philanthropists could do to benefit humanity would be to offer a billion dollar prize to anyone who can find a cost effective way to desalinate sea water. (By "cost effective" I mean competitive with the watershed in temperate climates. Also, disposal of waste brine would have to be figured in.) In the future water is going to be more important than oil.
