Drum solo excerpt from Earthworks Paderborn. I’m not sure I like this particularly; too many notes and not enough space. It’s much easier to play a note than leave one out. But I think for my style it makes sense to lay the drums out flat like this. I took that idea from the tympanist of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, who was giving a demonstration one morning at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). He just swivelled left and right so easily from the hips, with the mallets at the same height for each tympanum. It’s not where you take it from that counts, it’s where you take it to. If you’re interested in percussion and drums, go to one these Conventions if you can. Highly informative. #billbrufordsearthworks

What I love about Bill Bruford, is that his playing and solo's are so unique and not the same 'ol rock drum solo featuring how fast the obligatory double kick and tom roll is accomplished. Like Ginger Baker, their solos go places you never think of, are melodic and enjoyable. Not just a barrage of one's senses!

Bruford was such a huge influence on me. My dads friend came over and said I heard your son likes hitting pots & pans, and playing to the radio, the kid has to hear this guy, and it was the song Yours Is No Disgrace, by Yes. I was 6 years old back in 71 and it will forever be ingrained in my memory on my musical journey throughout life, he has such a magical /technical pulse that no one will ever be able to duplicate.

zero motion wasted...so precise but fluid...he moves to other pieces of the kits when he needs to strike them...even in the first 9 seconds when he hits the cymbals, his right hand just waits a beat before hitting it again - and it just locks in there until he hits the note. efficient mastery by a legend.

i've always respected drummers. But the real respect and link came after a recording weekend session with our first band, when finding out my function and performance as a keyboard player in that band improved so much by essentially linking it to what the drummer did and much less linking to the other musicians. i loved Yes and King Crimson, in particular the episodes in which Bill was in the list. Really respect and enjoy your channel Bill. Thanks for your music and your teaching.

The tone and sound of the instrument, and joy are fully present and accounted for - also, I love this totally ergonomic setup - probably lends itself to new musical ideas to radically change the arrangement of toms - and didn’t this arise from dealing with a back injury or some such ‘mother of invention’? Or is that way off the mark?

He did a video with Neil peart and bunch other greats doing buddy rich tributes, so you got to see a bunch of guys that you've never seen do jazz do jazz... Suffice it to say Neil part was admittedly way further behind in the jazz channel then all of them, Steve Smith was the sleeper for me I had no idea when I first saw that video how amazing he was, bill bruford I always liked, but he did a great impression as a jazz drummer ;), no it's stood out to me was how well he uses his left hand in match grip in spots where historically the traditional grip would take precedence even for the most stubborn drummer like I've seen a lot of even pro drummers really but you could only call pretend to know how to play traditional grip but what I like about Bill Buford is he doesn't pretend and Matt Garstka too, those two probably are the for anyone that wants a reason not to have to be able to play traditional Matt Garcia not only could probably do anything a drumline percussionist could do with traditional grip he could do as fast or as clean with Bill bruford too but he's not as as much of a freak of nature, and they both make excellent arguments for their decision both intelligent musicians and well-rounded drummers and to hear guys like that make very good arguments for why they don't feel the need to be able to play traditional grip it's at least comforting I mean I've dabbled here and there with traditional grip but most people don't even sit there right when they do slanted down away from them and a little to the to the right I mean slanted to the right, for those hybrid left handers don't set their snare any different and according to Buddy Rich well let's just say he'd probably yell at you,.. but back to this man and some of the best in studio tracks of all time on close to the edge and fragile with no real tech like Master tracks with click to make him sound pretty.. that's the thing I dig the most about the pre digital age like thinking about Harvey Mason on headhunters do those four songs all the way through in the studio, I don't know if he did as in one take, but I know they did it pretty raw back then and you just ended up with gorgeous sounding drum tracks where is today everything is so mechanical and quantized and grid oriented a guy like Jack de Jeanette would have been fired from every band he's in because he plays pretty loose let's say but he happens to be my favorite drummer if not top three, I'd say right now today you looking at Matt Garstka Benny greb,And Morgan agren, if you had to squeeze me into a corner to name my top three from today and I don't know if I've heard too much more of Harvey Mason other than headhunters but I don't think you need to those are foUr the best drum tracks ever recorded, and everything Jack dejanette did to me is gold and Keith Emerson I'm sorry Carl Palmer who surprisingly played traditional grip quite well probably the best rock drummer to play traditional grip other than Steve Smith but Steve Smith was more a jazz drummer who happened to also being a big rock band like Max Weinberg, where is Carl Palmer was a rock drummer through and through and could probably bang out jazz tunes no problem and could probably sIght read np, Bill Buford was definitely my top 5 or 10 of all time but definitely of years past, and along with Carter Buford you got some guys who played match grip so ambidextrously that it wasn't necessary to spend time relearning muscle memory to appease the smug drum crowd when it's not how you look when you play it's what comes out of the speakers and out of the drums... I actually met a guy when I first started playing we played together like an Allman Brothers thing and he would look at himself in the mirror while he played and that instinctively felt wrong and to this day I don't see anything right about it because it's not your eyes that makes you play the drums well or even improves your technique, if you watch Morgan agren, you'll notice that a lot of today's drum teachers would condemn his technique or the way he holds the sticks but you can't argue with results
