He was a super tough deer. We actually video of the fight where lost a bunch of that hair. He got routed, but it was late enough and dark enough we couldn't tell much about the other buck.

Yes, it was dead square liver. It looked better than that on video. He only went about 150 yards total though. Not very far, but he was tough and lived longer than I would have liked.

Thanks Wayne. I appreciate it. That shot was 50, but I had been practicing a lot of long shots that year and I was good out to 60. The main thing with shots past about 25 yards, though, is whether the deer will move when the arrow is in the air. That is really the big x-factor. In this case, if you look at it closely, the buck started to take a step as the arrow was in the air and that resulted in the hit that was slightly back (liver). It is hard to tell people what their maximum range is, but like I said, it is more related to the animal's movement than to the archer's pure ability. That is something to consider on every shot.

@@bill-winke Yessir I believe that too. I did in fact notice the deer step forward. i've been doin saddle public land bow hunting for about 11 years now and ive realized that deer in open areas have alot less predictable movements than a deer in thick side-covered bedding areas so my maximum range i trust varies. I practice to 60 yards max comfortably, my sight goes out to 100 yards but I don't bother with it unless I'm in a controlled inside environment to train stability. Regardless, hitting a 4" circle at 60 yards I can do comfortably but I'd take that shot on a buck who's less tempted to move while sniffing around head down in one spot in bedding areas. However in an open area like yours, I'll trust myself to 40 only as theres so many distractions and attractions that can cause him to move after that yardage. most times if I can take a buck without bleating at him I'll do it. as they don't hear the release on my Mathews. If I stop them I'm afraid any sound after that may encourage a twitch so have never tried it. Good job brother. Wayne..... from Ontario, Canada

So many deadlines and so many people who I had to interact with each day. It did wear me down. I think adrenaline is the only thing that keeps you going sometimes. It's getting to be that way again now, unfortunately. Something I was trying to avoid.

Chad, I think that had been planted to beans that spring but we had a drought that year and wiped most of the spring planted plots out. I believe it was some kind of volunteer grass that he was eating. Not sure what it was exactly.

No, that was a very small cutting diameter (1 1/4 inch) Rocket Steelhead. It hit the offside and bounced back slightly. I was a pure liver hit - center liver - so I am not sure why it didn't break the skin on the other side. It was a really big bodied buck, but it should have fully penetrated.

@@bill-winke good job. Really enjoy your content. Has very bad experience with rage in my past. Seems like they eother baisically cut the deer in half or don't deploy at all. I'm staying away from from them things for now on.
