Omg this is exactly what I want to be able to play one day. Already started practicing stride and will refer to this once I am comfortable adding the right hand in. Feel like I will get many months worth of mileage out of this particular video I am absolutely love the slow tempo and the syncopation here. I would love to simply listen to this or similar piece over and over again.

Great lessons here! You thoroughly hit the basics without going all the way back to 1st grade. I’m primarily a guitar player/singer who’s been banging on the piano for most of my life. Now, at 50 years old, and 40 years playing music on several instruments, I have decided to relearn it all from the beginning. KZfaq is an amazing resource with thousands of teachers, and it’s a thrill for me to discover one as articulate as you. Thank you. I am excited to go through all of your lessons in the coming years. Cheers!

I watched this last year, but didn't have the chops for this. But now I've been working on the Stride left hand techniques. I hate to politely disagree with Bill since he's a great teacher, but he said Chopin was a Classical musician. He was actually a Romantic. Mozart, Haydn and early Beethoven were Classical.
@BillHilton Жыл бұрын
It’s one of those words that people use lazily, I’m afraid, Lawrence 😂. The usual (rather slim) justification is that “classical” with a lower case “c” refers to the whole of western art music, from Gregorian chant through the Arvo Pärt, while “Classical” with a capital “C” is indeed roughly the Haydn-Schubert era. I certainly agree the terminology isn’t great…!

This is very good. I learned the difference between "boom-chuck" and "stride." (The dance music I play has a lot of boom-chuck.) I loved the way you built it all up, showing us all the pieces, and then walked through the improvisation. I"m currently building up my technique (1933 Starr piano with a stiff action, so I need strength!). I'll be happy to learn from you when I'm ready.
@BillHilton3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vicki - the Starr sounds like it's good exercise: stiff pianos can be good for your control. My upright piano (which I've had since I was 14, and love) has a very, very light action, which I prefer, but it's left me relatively "weak" when it comes to playing heavy actions, so you're doing things the right way around!

When you talk about peddling is yours an on/off pedal or a piano pedal. I have Yamaha p515 which comes with on/off pedal so difficult to pedal, or would it work in principle?
@BillHilton3 жыл бұрын
I'm using a piano pedal (well, a digital version of one). On-off and "pad" pedals are a bit of a pain, but you can still do a lot with them. When you get a chance it's worth investing in a decent-quality digital pedal. I've played a p515 (nice!) but I don't know the exact specs - I'd be very surprised if it didn't work with a decent-quality pedal that produced signal for half-pedalling etc.

Is Gymnopedie No1 stride?
@BillHilton3 жыл бұрын
...kind of. In the same what that much of Chopin's work contains "stride-type" left hand. For something to really fit the stride genre as it's usually understood, though, you're looking at it being at least vaguely jazzy or bluesy (or ragtime-y) and being in 4/4 or, occasionally, 2/4 or 2/2 time.
