One of the more common questions/comments we receive is along the lines of “64 buttons?! Does she use them all?!”
The answer is yes! She definitely has buttons that are used more often cough mad/fan toy/pets *cough*, but I’ve put together a compilation of every button being used in the last 10 months (the length of time we’ve been in this apartment). I hope you enjoy!
While it’s hard to generalize a percentage of the known vocabulary that an average English speaker uses, it’s been thrown out that daily conversation is probably around 3-10% (if you’re rather verbose!) of the total number of words we actually know. If Billi is using her buttons in the same manner, the slant towards more commonly used buttons would hold true.
This was a time consuming but fun project for me to put together, if you’d like to see other compilations let me know in the comments!

Billi is a female domestic shorthair, she's 14 years old, her favorite word is mad.
Inspiration for learning to “speak” with buttons from Hunger4Words (check her out on IG).

I think the accidental step and then oops really shows she knows that she's communicating. She'd have no reason to turn around and push oops if she just thought she was pushing buttons at random to get attention like I've seen some people postulate is happening. And then mad after was just so relatable. Small little mistake, but she's expressing frustration with having made one. So cute.

Except that animals don’t think in sentences, or syntax, or mistakes, or guilt, or redos, the list goes on. As a certified trainer it’s just sad to watch average people think that they’re actually teaching their pet anything at all
@champagnesupernova1839

@@StaticResurreXion deaf people don't think verbally, do they? if someone learns a new language later in life, they don't constantly think in that language, do they? intelligent animals can communicate with each other and other species, including humans, without any sort of training or buttons - these things only make their communications more clear for us when it works out. now of course the size difference between the brain of a cat and a human makes extended and/or complex conversations impossible. but to deny that any connections could be made is simply absurd.
@lz7839
@lz7839 Жыл бұрын
@@champagnesupernova1839 Brain size is not a valid indicator of intelligence anymore. Between studies showing bird brains work much differently than historically thought to and a specific slime passing all the scientific tests to determine actual intelligence, simply having what humans recognize as a brain is no longer even a valid starting point. While in some instances brain to body ratio may affect the thought process, it is only human vanity to wholeheartedly believe that humans are the only ones who can have intelligence (as is the person you posted your response comment to - Static Resurrection), be it demonstrated verbally or with actions. There are black kites (raptors)that use fire to it's own advantage, as in it picks up something that is already burning/smoldering then flies to an area not affected by fire, drops it to create another burn area so that is is easier to find prey during droughts. This has only been seen in Australia. Tell me that is not seriously intelligent! They are the only known species to use fire as such a tool aside from humans. Personally I think Billi is communicating in what is probably her second learned language, her primary one being her natural verbalizations/body language and her first learned one being whatever she focused on early in life to understand whatever she wanted to learn. @Champagne Supernova none of the above should be taken in a negative light with regards to what you posted. Please do not take my directness for anything insinuating insult or detriment to you! The so called "certified trainer" 'Static Resurrection' made me rather annoyed at their display of outright tunnel vision, troll style. That is where any bite in my words comes from. Animals are so much more than the masses of humans give them credit for. Not only in language skills or intelligence, but in social groups, family groups, inter species interaction + cooperation + understanding. Only the small minded and afraid seek to diminish the amazing wonders that other life forms are. Billi - you freakin rock!! [Edited to fix typos, but probably still missed some]

Also, I just realized that (at lest what we see of) Billi's comunication has gotten much more consistent. Back when Billi had only 2 hexagons, it was just "food" and "pets" and "mad" when she didn't get them. Then there was a phase where some of her "sentences" frequently made little sense (or required serious interpretation). But now, most of her sentences are reasonably clear.

I find it interesting that Billy actually enjoys this extra level of communication. She actually uses it as a tool to communicate with her humans. She realised it´s a way to convey some emotions and wants and needs and she wants to communicate them. It´s pretty impressive to watch it happening.

It’s clearly beyond the point of koko the gorilla, as we are allowed to see complete interactions without jumpcuts, and the audience isn’t locked out of the communication due to the faux “primate sign language”. Moreover Billi is clearly beyond the point of merely attempting permutations to get a reward, and has been observed to use the buttons when the humans are not nearby/paying attention. Talking to one’s self is a formative linguistic behavior that is often seen in human children. One failure of the medium is the inability for Billi to “stumble into” new word, perhaps saying hope instead of soap, the parent would provide context for the new word. In this case Billi’s vocabulary can only expand when more buttons are added.

I recently watched a video where someone who claimed to have whatever degrees cast doubt on whether Billi and Bunny were actually understanding what their buttons mean. Her conjecture was that their owners were imparting meaning where it didn't exist, and that the only worthwhile communication was verbal. *WHAT A BIG STEAMING PILE OF BS.* I've watched virtually every Billi and Bunny video and it's clear that each pet has their own set of terms, idioms, and objectives when they communicate: i.e. *they know exactly what **_they_** intend to communicate.* It *is* up to us to interpret, but the language has become established between owner and pet. And it is very real and very worthwhile. So, I would urge any so-called knowledgeable skeptics to get a pet, get some button, then interact with said pet via the buttons to gain empirical evidence before speaking on the subject.

@@Catherinzsl Ofc it is impressive that billie learned it at that age. but i want to see what the maximum is. and how much of a difference it makes that billie was raised with humen from a young age. i bet billie already had some form of understanding of human language. similar like a child, that is surrounded by complex music from a young age, developes perfect pitch. it is theorized that perfect pitch basically is the human brain learning to differentiate notes like processing language. they just hear that a note is a E2 like they know the color blue or any other. i think it would not only be of scientific interest to see a young cat learn the buttons, but also a feral that has not had much human contact in their youth. this is so interesting

I will never forget how she told you she was sick just before she vomited then got upset you wanted to check her before it got cleaned up. The buttons saved her life and I am so glad.

I absolutely had no idea that cats could understand all like humans. I feel unhappy that when my kitties were alive, we together missed out on all of this communication. They understood my words, but I had no idea their minds were always thinking. Billie has blown my mind by opening up all this new revelation of cats understanding sequences of events, concept of time..... We could have had such a richer relationship if only we could have communicated the way Billi and you communicate. This realization ... I am crying... So much I missed out on of their thoughts and feelings...😭

Yes, your cat is smart. When I had cats 30 years ago, I figured there was some untapped brain power that was lost in the word, "meow." My cat was 1/4 Siamese, so she was very vocal which was great. It felt like she would curse me out when I came home late from work and was late with her dinner. Now I know for a fact the hunch was right. This is great, you've proven that cats aren't so different than us after all. Keep up with these videos, this stuff is awesome!

i think she's said in the past that she didnt want to add "sad" as having multiple buttons for negative emotions could get confusing for billie, since sad and mad are kinda similar. i think mad tends to be enough most of the time, but it would be neat to see billie express more in-depth what type of negative feeling she's having.

I found myself glued to this as soon as I found it, and watched the whole thing immediately. When I studied Latin, which is a language mostly without word order, the first drafts of translations we did sounded very much like Billi's longer sentences. Further she'll string nouns together when we might recognize one as an adjective, for example, catnip water (inspired!). Is it possible she might understand ownership? Mom's mug, Billi's Fan Toy. Normally I wouldn't think that could be true, but cats are territorial. I'm wondering if she might understand some prepositions as well, like from, and to; from outside, from bedroom, settle to bedroom. Your linguistic connection with your kitty is so cool, and so sweet. I love your videos, and the patient, empathetic way you button with her.

I think my favorite part of watching Billi use the buttons to communicate, it's when she's responding to a question or formulating a question and she stops thinks about it and then turns around and walks very deliberately to whatever word button that she needs. I think this particular video showing the map and the different word groupings and their relationships really goes a long way to demonstrating the legitimacy of using this form of facilitated communication with Billi. It makes sense that locations in a room and locations on your body be next to each other just like questions and identity being next to each other.

The other day I got a nerve block done and I was panicking a bit. I usually ask people if they have cats and try to have a convo about that to calm myself. I also had my blu-tooth hat on and was watching Billi while they prepped me. My mom was there, too, and the convo we had about whether or not Billi knew What the was doing Was SUPER distracting, thank you! I love Billi and her big, beautiful eyes. I wish I could teach my boy how to case the buttons. He is in a lot of pain and discomfort without meds, but he is so out of it. I am amazed that Billi is elderly and ill (right? kidney troubles ?) and still doing all of these activities. It makes me think that these buttons sort of gave her more to learn and live for, as well as helping her feel a stronger connection and sense of satisfaction because she can communicate more specific information.

Some people get really outraged when you suggest that certain animals are capable of much more intelligent interactions that thought possible…but honestly, with how much we’ve been wrong about animal intelligence in the past, is it really that outrageous? We used to believe that fish couldn’t feel pain, that all animals were incapable of thoughts beyond survival, until research proved us wrong. Why can’t we delve even deeper into researching the capability of certain animals to learn and utilize words? Obviously there have been problems with anthropomorphizing in past experiments, specifically with chimps and gorillas, but what’s the problem with accepting that yes, animals are fundamentally and intellectually different from us in ways that cannot be ignored, but that they are ALSO capable of more than we previously thought? Billi is an ambassador for all kitties, at least in my eyes. ❤️

For oops, Kendra said she modeled it when she would hit the wrong buttons on accident (usually while using a foot to hit buttons), thus teaching the idea that oops would sort of erase what you said. And I don't understand is a very new button that Kendra has been modeling ever since she started with buttons! She always says 'I don't understand. Can you try again?' when Billi says something Kendra doesn't understand. Billi seems to have taken to using it as intended very quickly which is so amazing.

The way you teach a child those things: you say them appropriately. For most language we don't sit children down and repeat words at them, we just narrate what we're doing when we're in "baby teaching mode", talk naturally otherwise. This is also how children notoriously pick up swear words. Nobody tries to explain to the kid what it means, it just pops out of their mouth at the worst possible time and little kids figure out that's what you say when things went oops...
