Yo! That tip about turning counter clockwise and pushing in saved me from calling a technician! I didn’t see that in any other videos. I spent half an hour trying to figure out how to get that transmission back on! You saved my sanity! Thank you!

What a great clear concise information. As I type my Kenmore is spinning like new!!! A tip for fellow :OLD FARTS" like me. Lay the washer down flat before you reassemble it! The angle thing works great for tearing it appart but that motor and transmission is a lot eaiser to handle in the reassemble with the washer flat. This is no way a critisim. The video was one of the best "Ican fix this videos" on KZfaq.. You saved me a bundle!!! Thank You a thousand times.

As a guy with an old Series 90 Kenmore washer that stopped spinning, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video-parts 1 and 2. Brilliant. I've been convinced I have to buy new machines, but nothing, and I mean nothing, seems to be built as well as these old machines. Bells and whistles? Sure. But basic, bulletproof functionality is hard to find. If I can get a new clutch and install it myself, and get a few more years out of these mid-90s machines, then I'm gonna be a happy camper. First, I just want to say thanks for taking the time to create and post such an informative video. Second I would like to give everyone a warning as there may be nothing at all wrong with their washer. I just found out that it is normal for the washer NOT TO SPIN during the first stage of the spin cycle; only the pump is activated. After most of the water is pumped out the motor stops for a couple of seconds then starts up again. You hear a click an then the washer spins and pumps out the rest of the water. I opened my washer one day during the first stage and thought it was broken because only the pump was working. I ended up taking everything apart before finally realizing this so I hope this helps someone.

The way you make sure to be so complete in your lesson, ex. which way the washer goes on that fell down when pulling the transmission was wonderful. Showing four different versions of the agitator removal screw. I really felt compelled to write this review as when the video was complete, I knew that I had learned good information and in a complete way. I fixed my kenmore washer on my own and also cleaned out the massive amount of gunk buildup on the inner tub. Now it spins like new and no more smell, and saved us a ton of money!

Thanks Bill, just brought home my wife and our firstborn child, a son. The first load of spitup covered ans soiled linens i tried to run, i came downstairs to a drum full of soaking wet clothes. Ran the timer back around to spin... Motor runs, drum tries to spin but doesnt get up to speed. Have to help it to get up to speed by hand. Lol i can see the headline now, "Man found wrapped around washing machine agitator, dead." Found your 11 year old video to confirm my suspicions of what is wrong with my 23 yr old washer. Great video, I have not looked under my washer yet, Its a 22yr old White Westinghouse. I'm hoping its the same style setup. My tub turns but not fast enough to remove the water from the clothes. To me, from what I have been watching, I hope it the coupling. But think it's the clutch. LOL The only mystery on my machine is the agitator and shaft are different from Whirlpool. But I guess I'll figure that out once I'm knee deep into it. KZfaq has been my go-to source for repair info. I have saved hundreds of dollars fixing, motorcycle, car, plumbing, cement work( tuck pointing ) , clothes dryer and now my clothes washer. Thanks to you and all the others doing these videos!

Hey Bill - Thanks for the videos! My wife said the washer won't spin and she noticed the agitator also wasn't working quite right. After watching your videos I found we had bad dogs on the agitator and a bad motor coupling. $22.00 and an hour of my time, I fixed both problems. I even watched your video on removing and re-installing the cabinet. You are a gem on youtube!! Thank you so much!

Bill, I can not thank you enough for these videos. Repair guy quoted me 175 dollars to replace the motor coupling. Took me 3 hours with your youtube video, and the total cost was 24 dollars. Thanks for the great videos and help! BTW, instead of replacing the clutch on my washer, I reconditioned the clutch by sanding the inner drum and clutch pads to de-glaze them, then cleaned them with alcohol and stretched the spring for a little more tension. My washer is to old spend 40-50 bucks on a new clutch when I can buy a used mint washer and dryer set on craigs list for 150. Cheers!

Such a helpful set of videos! After our 2006 Kenmore Elite washer stopped spinning, agitating, spinning, and draining properly, your video gave me the knowledge to replace the lid switch, coupler, clutch banding, and agitator dogs. Our washer now performs brand new. I’ll never get rid of this pair, as parts are super easy to find, the direct drive system is super robust, and the garbage they manufacture now has no chance of lasting as long as this stuff!

I was about to throw in the towel and cut our losses with the 15+ year-old Kenmore Elite washer that stopped spinning, then I found Bill Newberry's videos and figured what the heck. So, following his excellent instructions, I ruled out the coupling, which looked OK. Again, I figured the machine was toast. Then I found his two videos (parts 1 & 2) detailing how to locate and check the clutch. Seemed to turn too easily, as he described, so I rolled the dice, ordered a new one ($60 with shipping), and not without some struggle, got it reassembled. And it worked, even with a heavy full load of towels. Newberry's guidance couldn't have been better.

This is the second time you have helped me get my washing machine working again. Both times it was the clutch that slipped and was tilted. The first time I was back and forth to the computer making sure I was doing it right. This second time (this morning) I went over it again with your WONDERFUL videos and got it done with out all the stress and it it took me about a half hour. Great tutorial! I took everything apart and it all looked fine, and when i reassembled it all it started spinning again, so I'm not sure what went wrong initially, but it's working now and it didn't cost a dime!

The damage couldn't be seen until the motor was off as you said. Your disassembly -reassembly procedure went perfectly. Bill, My husband and I can't thank you enough for your very thorough video. Our Kenmore 80 series is 13 years old and it stopped spinning the other day, but continued to run and make a weird noise, (much like the washer in another video that you did). We followed your video step by step. First, we checked the motor coupler and while it looked "just okay," we did what you said and really gave it a good look. We also checked the clutch and the dog agitators, just to be sure. We came to the conclusion that the motor coupler was just worn down so we switched it out and voila!! Now, our washer spins again! Thanks, Bill, for sharing your knowledge!!

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps. Spent a lot of time watching repair videos that don’t fully help you diagnose your problem. I initially thought my whole transmission was bad since the clutch passes visual inspection, but the torque test is key. You save me a few hundred bucks and fixing the wrong issue.

My very mechanical boyfriend said to buy a new washer and gave me the money. I'm a 52 yr. female and fixed it myself (yay should keep money). It was the coupler was rounded out. Put back together and agitator was frozen (crap must not have turn counter clockwise to release brake), took apart again because I thought it was suppose to turn one way but not the other (moved both ways when I started). Put back together, still frozen (suppose to be dah) turned on made noise but no agitating. Spin worked tho. Forgot to turn on water, who knew it wont agitate unless full of water. Works great! Thank you for saving me so much money for now and in the future.

Great how to videos. My washer is about 7 years old. One of my 3 bolts underneath snapped (rusted?) in half and the other two worked themselves loose until they fell out during a wash cycle leaving the whole motor/transmission unit on the floor while running. Washer made a banging noise like an unbalanced load. Lifted the lid and realized the clothes bin was about 3 inches lower than it should be. Tried to drain water out of washer by switching control to Rinse mode but it made a terrible noise. Unplugged everything and moved washer to find two and a half bolts on the floor. Had to drill out the half that stayed in the shaft. This video helped me to take apart and put back together once I had new bolts. Thanks so much! Saved a lot of money and learned a lot in the process!

Bill Thanks for the video. Had to do a repair fast when the Sears technician failed to show up last Friday. Saved me a bunch and bought the parts off Amazon instead of the Sears site. I had to watch the video again when I struggled to re-install the shaft to bolt the motor back up. That little anti-clockwise push trick is quite important to get the motor in flush position for bolting. My wife thanks you.

I was about to scrap my washer. After watching your video i was able to find a problem you didn't mention. The tube brakes! Your tub turn counter-clock wise and mine didn't! Somehow the brakes was seized up. I took off the retaining c-clams and took out the brake mechanism. After reinstallment the tub could now turn just like yours did. Now my machine works as it should. No clutch replacement need. My machine wasn't spinning. Thanks a bunch!!!

Bill, thank you I diagnosed & repaired following your step by step instructions. Found motor coupler pieces on floor upon tilting machine ordered part on amazon fixed for $2.96 saved a ton of money thank you Bill. I did remove the cabinet as it was loose and wanted to secure it on properly when doing this there is a water tube in the back make sure that is secured on properly as mine came off accidentally and leaked (my fault). Machine is working like a charm now thank you again BIll

I have exact washer. Followed your instructions step by step from my lap top in the utility room. The only difference was that the spline at the top of my transmission rod was rusted and pitted. I had to pound it out with a 2"x4" as not to damage the spline or threaded hole. Once out, I wire brushed the spline and everything went in smooth. You saved me at least $600 on a new washer. These older top load washer are pretty easy to work on. Not much electronical stuff to go wrong.

This saved me a bundle....simple...easy...makes me think about fixing more things around the house I thought were hard to do. Just remember the couplings are made with metal inserts now which supposedly may or may not start to round the edges of the shaft. Supposedly whirlpool fixed it. Thanks against..was ready to just buy a new one since it's 13+ years old! but if I can get a coupling and spend an hour fixing it I'm super happy

I just want to thank you soo much last week my washer broke it wouldn't spin but would fill I was about to just buy a new one and watched your video. I took my washer apart and found it had a had a broken coupler. I purchased a new one on eBay for $4 and fixed it today. Thank you soo much 👍👍👍❤️😄

Thanks for your help! I couldn't figure out how to get off the spinning thing and you showed how the little cover pops off to get to the 7/16 bolt. Appreciate you. My washer had a bad clutch, it had trouble spinning the tub, sometimes I would spin it manually as to help it to start the spin cycle. When it finally failed I couldn't manually turn the tub, the pump and motor spun freely so I figured it was something with the clutch or brake. Saved a lot of money doing it myself

I replace coupler but the rubber piece was dry but didn't fix it now the wife says it didn't fix it so got new clutch the newwer one with 6 (six) pads and followed your on spot directions only thing never mentioned was those pads and my kit came with two spring blue and black I put blue on and stuck that pad in it and put it back this way . outside of what spring and those pads this was the best utube Bill. thank you .😉

Great job on explaining things. I got a call from my daughter-in-law tonight telling me her clothes were soapy and still quite damp. I didn't hesitate to jump right in and start sourcing out the problem. I'm very fortunate that my skills as an HVAC technician provide me with trouble shooting skills. I did find and figure out that the motor coupling was broken and needs replacement. I just want to be sure that there's no issue with the transmission that caused the break other than age and fatigue. I'm going to replace the coupling and hope that it's problem solved.

0:58 NOW is the time to change the Motor to the Transmission coupling. That coupling is a 3 piece coupling consisting of 2 plastic pieces ( one each on the Motor and on the transmission ) with a RUBBER coupling in between those two pieces. This is a phenomenal video. The attention to the VERY IMPORTANT details that might otherwise be overlooked is great.

Just want to let all of you newbie amateur washer repair techs. that the difficulty of spinning the clutch band is a subjective judgement. I replaced the band and the coupler in mine 5-7 years ago. It stopped again. After finding the coupler to be good, I did the spin test on the clutch band to find it rather difficult to spin. So I moved on to the more difficult things it could be, which took me to the transmission not neutral draining. After watching a video and seeing the complications of it, I decided to remove the clutch band from the clutch ring it installed in. Upon removal of it, I found one of the plastic pads severely worn two pads barely worn, but two pads completely missing. After replacement of the clutch band, it's back to working like new. So my point here is, if the coupler is good and the band has plenty of tension on it, before continuing on to other and more difficult trouble shooting and or repairs than removing the band for a visual inspection, do a visual on it. Don't skip/miss the simple things to fix more difficult things that aren't broke.

Bill, AWWSOME video. I folloewed your instructions and everything you described was spot on! My washer would not spin, agitator worked fine, but no spin cycle. I had to change my coupler a few years ago and had to remove the sheild on the washer. I really like your way of tilting the washer to get at the motor. My clutch was bad only problem I had was getting the retaining clip back on. I changed the coupler again since I already had everything open. Great Job!! Thanks

Both outstanding videos. I purchased a kit on Amazon that included both the full clutch with ALL the related parts, including two different springs and the coupler for less than the cost of the two parts separately. I was not sure which of the two springs to use, but one was the exact same size as the original plus it was blue (new spring & original were both blue), the other was a little bit longer. So is used the shorter, blue spring. Also, I must not have been careful turning & pushing in on the white plastic brake tab that he specifically says to turn counterclockwise and push on just before he reinserts the long shaft into the hole at 5:40. When I finished and plugged in & restarted the machine, it still did not spin !!! I tried turning things like the coupler assembly, motor, clutch, . . . Whatever I could turn and finally noticed inside the tub that the agitator was not turning right. Clockwise should just move freely and counterclockwise should activate the four dogs when trusting by hand. After manipulation by hand, something felt into place and it started working just fine. Whew !!! Dodged a bullet. I think I must not have fully seated that white plastic part as he says in his instructions at 5:40. Hardest part for me was trying to reinstall that retention spring that holds the clutch in place on the rod/shaft. I had to get assistance to hold one side in place while I clipped in to other end. You can probably get away with just changing out the "ring with the little white brake pads" and not the large metal "dish" which avoids this difficult step, but I was concerned about not going ahead and replacing the small white plastic part that goes between the clutch and shaft assembly. I figured any plastic was susceptible to wear & tear and breakage. My 15 year old Kenmore washing machine, is running great now. Should last another 15 years.
