For whatever reason Curry blamed his trainer Jesse Reid for this loss. Years later in an argument in Las Vegas Curry actually fired a gun at Reid and was arrested.

Bill Costello was a good fighter that took advantage of an opportunity to be a world champion. Whether Curry was past it or not, he was still 27 and a world champ. But we know boxers age different

Curry is clearly a shot fighter here. Uncoordinated, no reap power etc etc As a footnote : Ex Curry and Sugar Ray Leonard ( 76 Olympics ) opponent and quality pro Clinton McKenzie said he was never hit as hard to the body as Curry hit him.

What the hell was Ricard Steele waiting for? I know refs back then (I was a fan back then) let fights go on, but that was ridiculous.

Daniel E. Muhammad In the grand scheme of things, Curry was pretty much shot by this time. If you see his earlier fights from the 70s, he was much crisper and fresher and a solid puncher. In all honesty, he was on the downside of his career when he won the title. He’d had some tough fights up to the point. Take a look at his first fight against Wilfred Benitez and his shootout with Monroe Brooks. They’re both up here.

Daniel E. Muhammad Oh, Damn. LOL. Well, Costello won the title because Curry was at the end of his rope.

A very good question, considering the number of top lightweights who also fought at juniorwelter.
