The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It is so heart breaking we do not have these types of performers today. Mr. B a real singer and gentleman. I have talked with a number of performers who knew this man. My main man Charlie Sifford a Black Golfer who knew this man and he always spoke very highly of Mr. Eckstine. Oh Mr. Charlie Sifford was the first Black American to win the Senior PGA. Rest in Peace to the best this nation had to offer to the world.

Charlie Sifford was Billy Eckstine's golf teaching pro as you know. Joe Louis had a black golf teaching pro named Teddy Rhodes who used win so much money hustling Louis on the golf course that he didn't fight to desegregate the PGA Tour the way that Sifford did

Tears fall freely when I hear that voice, music is so much greater than religion. (Music is where God hangs his hat when he watches “christians” politicize Him!)

I was sent here by Kareem's newsletter. Billy was great but the problem was all those Italian tenors in the 50s had pop locked up, and then rock n roll came along, we've had 7 decades of high-voiced men. I'm a feminist but this is where I want a deep-voiced manly man! Sick of the screamers.

Very smooth, but can't compare to the interpretation by the co-author and original artist, Anthony Newley, especially in this performance, on KZfaq: Anthony Newley - Hollywood Palace #6 of 6.

I've heard Anthony Newley sing this song, and thought it was just a pretty good singer with a mediocre song. Now that I've heard Eckstein sing it (perhaps for the first time), I realize what kind of fool I've been. That's what a great singer can do for a song. Thanks, Kareem, for leading me to this.

@@robertackerman4675 Melodically, I agree. But as far as telling the story from the point of view of the character it was written for, I think Newley's version is more authentic.

BE was well-spoken, tall, slim, light-skinned, and VERY handsome. As his popularity grew, especially with women, including white women, many white men became threatened. The old trope: He's after "our" women. Eckstine wasn't stupid; he was friendly and smiling with fans, but kept his hands to himself and was careful what he said. In 1950, a photo was printed in Life magazine of BE surrounded by white female fans. Everyone is laughing hard. His arms are at his sides but a blonde woman is resting her arm and forehead on his chest in her hilarity. The photo caused a huge stir and backlash toward him. Doors started closing that had been open and it really limited his career.
