Young people will never have singers and entertainers like this, and it's a damn shame.

I've lived in Vegas the last 50+ years & saw all the greats of the day, Frank, Dean, Elvis, Tony, Wayne, Sammy. Sammy was the ultimate entertainer, performer. He could do it all & he did it all.

I met him after a performance of Golden Boy on Broadway in the 60s. My sister was an usher in the theatre and there was a party after a performance to which theatre staff were invited. We were just teenagers and stood in the wings revelling in just seeing him up close. He called us over and asked about us and gave us a glass of champagne. I will never forget it. He knew how to develop the narrative of a song. He understood how to use phrasing and exploit the lyric to create tension and anticipation from the audience and of course he knew how to deliver a finale that completely satisfied expectation. He was a masterful storyteller with perfect pitch and timing. As for the actual instrument in that larnyx and diaphram, what control !

Truly one of the greatest entertainers to ever live. He is hugely underappreciated.
