Billy Gibbons strolls up. I offer my guitar. Here is my version using same guitar, amp, and backing track: • The Thrill Is Gone, Kø... and check out the rest of my videos / angelicproductions
Note added 18.11.2021: Many have commented that people are not stopping to listen. This took place on the corner of a small pedestrian street and a larger shopping street with nice shops and a tram line. Finns are respectful of personal space and tend to leave people alone, plus Billy had his back toward most people. The whole thing lasted just minutes. At 0:30 a blonde turns and perhaps recognizes him but she keeps on walking. People are just going about their business in the middle of a beautiful sunny day. Billy was out shopping with his wife when he heard me. He walked up to the corner to see who was playing. He talks about it at 1:12 of this interview from Sweden • THE ENEMY: ZZ Top - In... .
The story was picked up by Finnish media. www.is.fi/viihde/art-20000012.... I never for a moment thought the video would make a stir. I just put it on KZfaq like I do my others. I know better now to protect my property. My video was pirated by a bunch of sites that post rock and blues stuff.
Joe Bonamassa asked Billy about the episode at 17:20 of this recent podcast • Live From Nerdville wi... . The "slow blues number" was The Thrill is Gone. Billy asked what key I was in. I told him B minor. That was pretty much all the conversation. It was all very natural. I handed him the guitar and he jumped right in. The Thrill is Gone is one of my favorite loops. Here it is again from a video shoot in Copenhagen. This video shows the guitar in great detail. I used basically the same amp, an earlier version of the Roland Micro Cube. This shoot took place next to the Round Tower of Copenhagen (Danish: Rundetårn).
-- • CITY BLUES
Apparently, Billy liked my blue guitar and stopped back to make me an offer but I was gone. By the way, the finish on the guitar is Daphne Blue, not Sea Foam Green. It is indeed a great guitar. It's extremely articulate. It has small vintage 6230 frets and a 7.25" neck radius. The pickups are Fender Custom Shop 54's. The bridge assembly is Callaham with a full size steel block. The neck is substantial and I have it set very straight with almost no relief. It has soft-V contour and a nitro finish. The whole instrument is vintage spec. You can hear more of it on this video shot by a retired economist in Copenhagen who heard me on the street and asked if he could record me.
-- • Nobody Knows You When ...
That guitar was assembled by a gifted luthier in Pennsylvania from excellent parts selected by me. Most of the parts were purchased over eBay. You don't need a name brand instrument today to own a great guitar.
I have another excellent parts Stratocaster with a cherry red body by MJ Tele that I won in an eBay auction. It has a somewhat thinner C-shaped neck, 9.5" radius, and 6105 fret wire, tall and narrow, although I like the fact that they are quite worn down now. The rest of the hardware and pickups are the same as in the blue one. A few videos:

For anyone who is interested, my PhD dissertation was a psychometric study of musician personality and occupational stress. I collected data from about 1,400 musicians over the Internet using an in-depth survey that contained 60 items measuring the Big Five dimensions of personality as well as items measuring stress and numerous musician-related variables. It's a free download.
-- repository.upenn.edu/edissert...
Nine clusters of musicians emerged using a robust algorithm that sorted musicians based on the similarity of their personality profiles. Each musician's personality profile consisted of scores for Neuroticism, Extroversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. I ordered the clusters by Neuroticism because this personality dimension was the strongest predictor of occupational stress and psychosomatic troubles. It turns out that the cluster highest in Neuroticism and lowest in Agreeableness (cluster 9) had a disproportionate number of jazz and rock musicians. Musicians in that cluster were also low on Extroversion and Conscientiousness. They reported the highest levels of stress and psychosomatic troubles.
Best wishes,
Emmanuel Angel, PhD

Yes, he seemed very happy and relaxed. His wife stood next to me and looked on as I shot this video. She's also his manager, so I'm sure she stood ready to jump in should anyone mess with him, but as you can see people did not recognize him or they just left him alone. At 0:30 a blonde turns her head as she walked by. She may have recognized him, but she just kept on walking. Finns are respectful of personal space. As one Finn commented, "It's because in Finland we let people be. We don't have term like 'starstruck'. We let everybody do what they want to do without disturbing them." Check out my rendition from Copenhagen using the same guitar, amp, and backing track of The Thrill Is Gone, in B minor. --> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8qBo9Kdmp6nm5c.html. I met him in Ontario also, at the Port Carling boat show. He was standing beside his entry in the show, alone, a mahogany classic boat with the name “ZZ” emblazoned in large gold lettering across the stern. Took me a minute to put it all together, him with his beard, his name as the owner right on the little sign beside the dock that described some details of his boat. I told him I was a young teen living in Atlanta when ZZ Top’s “Tres Hombres” album hit the stores, and how that blew everybody away across the South. I told him how I used to open up the gatefold of that original album and look at the double wide photo of the huge Mexican meal spread out with the cold Cerveza sweating on the table, and how I just thought that was so freaking cool. He was super chill and friendly!

Billy is a very humble guy. He was nice enough to talk to me for about 15 minutes at my work one day . I told him ZZ was the first concert I had ever seen and that Just Got Back from Baby’s was my favorite tune of theirs. And he goes “ Aw man those are still some of my favorite licks.” while doing a little air guitar riff. He actually remembered the tiny venue I saw them at. He also asked if I was from Texas and shook my hand after. Just a down to earth great musician.

Yes, very nice man. I talked with him once, it was late 80's and I was in a restaurant called Happy Days that happens to be just one block away from this place where he's playing in this video. Girlfriend comes back to the table and says there's a dude from ZZ TOP. First I didn't believe her, but then had to go and check for myself. Suddenlt, as I was approaching him in a crowded bar a big guy blocks my way (his bodyguard) but Billy says it's ok and i got to change few words with him and shake his hand. Aapo The automatic assumption that Americans would disrespect him is pretty juvenile. There are tons of videos on this site that show what a good experience that kind of thing can be. And, honestly, I think that most American musicians would find that being completely ignored as they play is not polite at all, rather the opposite.
@abobb0
@abobb0 8 жыл бұрын
+Todd Pund I don't mean that americans are disrespectful but those crazy paparazzis and mass of fans would start following him and stopping him for hundreds of autographs and pictures. So I don't think that you are disrespectful what I mean is that some fans there in america are not afraid to follow someone and ask for pictures and autographs so if he would play the guitar like this people would just get all over him with no intensions to be disrespectful but for the musician it might seem a bit disrespectful or bot depends on the person.

@66fredo99 la France Actually, Jimi was very humble, as can be seen on many interviews where he gets embarrased whenever someone tries to label him as "the worlds greatest guitarist", and on such occations he would frequently mention other great guitarist that he thought deserved as much credit as himself. Now, Billy had been opening for Jimi with The Moving Sidewalks, and what Sammy is probably alluding to is the well known story that Jimi on at least one such occation mentioned Billy as another contender for the title. I wouldn't read too much into it, though, he probably said similar things about many other guitarist. It really doesn't matter though, Billy is probably one of the most under-rated guitarist in history (at least by the general public), and every blues/rock guitarist over a certain age know his huge influence and historical importance.

Gibbon's first band, The Moving Sidewalks' opened a few shows for The Doors & Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was so taken with Billy's talent that he not only taught him a few things, but he also gave him a pink Strat. Gibbon's profile was given a boost when Jimi named him as "America's best young guitar player." during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. 1968. Gibbons was 17.

I fail to see how not recognizing some person you're not very familiar with and stupidity are linked together. Ignorance and stupidity aren't the same thing. Billy Gibbons may be superstar in the US, but in Finland he's not and by assuming everyone should be able to recognize him on the street, you just demonstrated your own stupidity. Why so eager to show everyone you're not very smart? Don't get me wrong though; there's nothing wrong with being stupid and there's not much a person can do about it. It's just the way some people are. But because it's not very desirable attribute why wouldn't you try to make it a little less obvious? Just for your own sake. I actually do hope you wasn't all that serious with that statement. However, since I do lack the sophisticated sense of humor of yours, I'm afraid I have slight problems to understand the funniness of calling people stupid. As I see it, it was just a poor attempt to insult other people and quite ironically the arguments behind the insult were so flawed the only thing you managed to insult was yourself (although you probably didn't even realize it). If you for a some reason want to insult someone -- maybe to boost your false sense of superiority or quench your sadistic thirst -- at least try to be more creative, if you please. For example instead of calling my mother just "fat" it's far more effective to say "Your mom is so fat if she eats any more she'll cross the schwarzschild radius and form a black hole". It may take a bit brain power to come up with good and funny insults though, especially when you have to do it fast, but if you manage to do that it'll pay of in the end.
