The second part of day 1 of my Jan 2022 High Country Trip with Bruce and his 200 Series.
We headed off from Grant Historic area after lunch, make our way via the Hibernia Track and Conway Track down to Kingswell Bridge and on to Billy Goats Bluff.
We had a long tough climb and helped our some guys with a 79 early on before finally getting to the Pinnacles Lookout.
A great day wheeling. Enjoy the video!

Did Billy goats in late Feb in my GU, conditions were dry and perfect. It was even more chopped up then but plenty of traction due to dry conditions. Rain definitely is a game changer. Thanks for the long detailed video, it'd be very helpful for people that've never done the track before.

Thx mate. I try and show more than just the highlights of tracks to give people an idea of whether they want to tackle it themselves.

Did Billy Goat Track today (22 Jan 23). First time for me in a NX Pajero. Conditions where perfect but my mate was saying in his whole time of doing the track, it's the worst he's seen it. Was pure rock crawling, big wheels lifts and just 110% focus. Was so happy when we got to the top. Thanks for the video mate keep it up!

Glad to hear about another Paj out there! It's a great drive, but yeah in it's current state needs focus and you have to keep your attention on the track. Been a few come to grief last few months. When it's a good day the neck is amazing to drive across and the fire tower so worth it!

I did it in the same condition but in the dry, on my own for the first time, swore id never do it in a d22 again. Some of those upper sections were so hectic i had a super dry mouth at the top, but didnt break anything on the car! Great vid!

Thanks mate. That was filmed in January 2022. We're planning to hit Billy Goat again in a couple of weeks, Jan 2024, this time I'll be in the 76 with no lockers or traction control so should be interesting.

Looking forward to zeka spur video. I've not done it and keen to see the track. Longer videos are appropriate for informational purposes. Thanks Jason for putting in the time & effort with them. Helps a great deal actually!

Great video! I drove Billy Goats yesterday 8/01/23 and they still haven’t graded the track. All the loose gravel and shale between the rock ribbons has gone completely. Between minutes 27:00 and 31;20 of your video, that has become pure rock crawling, very very bouncy!! I completed the track with my stock bar tyres 2011 Triton (solo) but a 2017 dmax 2 vehicles ahead dropped its fuel tank on the track. Double black Dimond track for sure at the moment and needs an experienced person at the wheel Great vids well done 👏👏 39:48

thx Mate, yeah amazing how much it changes, when I drove it easter 2020 it was almost a 2wd track. Not that now at all. Sounds like you did well! Bummer for the guy with the Dmax, were they able to sort it on the track?

Completed the track last weekend in dry conditions. Had no idea about the track beforehand. Once we started we just kept going. Two cars, both stock standard. A 20 y.o. Troopy on skinny tyres and a nice, newish Ford Everest. Our recovery gear was a long-handled shovel. No issues at all. Even stopped half-way up to enjoy a beer. I think we got lucky?

Ripper video Jason. It has been at least 10 years since I was up Billy Goats 🐐. Then I had an NM petrol Pajero...I'm keen now after watching this movie to take the NX up, I'm sure it should be fine...but I won't do it if it's wet...FARK THAT.. Thanks for the videos 🍺🍺

Thx Matt, appreciate the feedback!. Yeah huge difference this time to the last couple of times. Very doable in any vehicle with a basic 2" lift. Just be patient and take your time.

Last time I did this track a couple of years ago the loose rocks made it so hard that 4 land rovers, a Range Rover and a jeep cooked their auto’s, to the point of boiling the fluid and spewing it all over the tracks/roads on the way home! My wife’s stock(no lift) NX had a transmission hot warning on the track, so I stopped for 30 minutes and continued, and changed the fluid 2 weekends later to be safe ! You can do this track on road tyres, aside from being more puncture resistant M/Ts are actually worse on this track than road tyres as they have less rubber touching the rocks due to the wide tread groves !

Time before this trip we had some overheating issues with the Paj but it was a hot day and, I found out later the cores on the radiator and transmission cooler were over half blocked by insects etc. This time no overheating issues, just some traction issues and I hear it's even worse now from others who have driven it more recently.

Gday loving your vids , Im amazed how capable the Paj is not that im biased 😉 May i offer a bit of advice re R/Diff Lock use it if it looks gnarly , then disengage , I have run diff locks on a previous car and yes the steering does get hard but not a game changer . Better to use in case as 9 times out of ten when you do need it your past that point of no return and its useless . Yes im subscribed have been for a bit now 👍 Good luck keep up the good work 👌

Thx mate, appreciate the feedback! I do use the rear difflock, judiciously, just not when climbing around corners. Pretty sure I put it in a couple of times on this trip up Billy Goats. Coming with a factory rear difflock was one of the deciding factors when choosing a vehicle back in 2018. Have to agree (I probably am biased) the paj is pretty capable. I've been out with patrols, cruisers, troopy's and bang for buck the Paj is pretty awesome. When selecting the vehicle I tossed up between a prado and the Paj. Bonus with the prado was came factory with a long range tank. The Paj came factory with rear diff lock, slightly more power (at the time) and was $20k cheaper.....

Billy goat is certainly different when I done it in December and January dry and dusty I think it's close now is it because of the winter closures?
@OffTheBeatenPathAus

I actually don't think Billy Goats Bluff is one of the seasonally closed tracks. At least it's not shown on the Hema Maps that it is, but my copy is a few years old now.

@@OffTheBeatenPathAus sounds like it may be time for repairs haha. Weirdly enough I think you ran into my cousin. He was up Billy Goats in Jan with some Mates and had his family aboard. They turned back due to having the tent on the roof and a lot of very wet gear from the rains (they usually don't have the rooftop on for 4wd) They were in a silver older Prado. Sound familiar?

Hi Jason, I have done Billy Goats twice in my NX Pajero and never seen it that bad. Just interested what you do when the beeping starts as the nitrogen booster gets depleted ? . I know there’s no choice but to continue but you have never mentioned it :).

Last time we did Billy Goats (one of my very early videos on the channel) it was 30 plus degrees and (I found out later) my radiator and intercooler were both half blocked. We stopped many many times on that climb to let it cool down both transmission and engine, and the traction control to settle down. This trip, only had beeps a few times and it was towards the end of the climbs, I just pushed on and took it easy after the climb. I always select my gear as well, rather than leaving it in D, which seems to help.

Can you do this track with just A/T but without a lift in a Prado you think?
@OffTheBeatenPathAus
@OffTheBeatenPathAus Жыл бұрын
My tyres are A/T, I don't run M/T's. A lift isn't crucial to most sections but you will have to choose your line carefully. The track condtions can change markedly and with the rain we've had recently I'd expect it to be at least as tough as when I filmed this video. Would be best if you had at least one other vehicle with you to assist if required. Also, you can always drive it to the helipad and see what you think. If you find the first half easy enough then push on but if you find that pretty challenging maybe not as it gets tougher after the helipad.

Billy Goats - rough as ever, come on, you are spoilt! We used to drive it in old cruisers, Patrols, Landys, with no power steering, leaf springs, no power brakes, crash gearboxes, skinny rag tyres called pizza cutters today, flooding petrol engines and recovery gear that consisted of chain, SWR and Tirfor winches. Walk in the park these days, with modern vehicles, unless of course you don't have a clue?
