I was digitizing family videos and found this at the end of a VHS tape. It's an old late 80's Grammy performance of one of my favorite Billy Joel songs.

I’m 64 years old in 2 weeks and I had never heard this song till this weeks this is us episode. Absolutely the most beautiful song ever written. I probably listened to it 15 straight times Tuesday night. My X wife suffered mostly in silence from my years of neglect and lack of appreciation of her. I was asleep when she did make it known how unhappy she was. We had a beautiful family and 3 fantastic children. When I woke up it was too late for her after more than 30 years. No matter how hard I try I will always suffer from the pain and guilt of making her feel like she had to leave. She never thought I loved her. She was so wrong. It was me I didn’t love. I miss her and my family every day. Wake up and hear what your spouse is telling you. Divorce is way worse than a death in your life. I want to send this song to her but she would appreciate that. Life with no music would be very sad indeed. Most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Thank you Mr Joel! 💔

Your words are very genuine and humble. It is a beautiful song that Billy actually had written many years before putting it out on an album. I hope your ex. hears your tribute.

Neil, I like you have only heard this beautiful song for the first time and I'm 70 in April. I've read your post, I would call it regret and respect. I'm sorry that you have so much regret for your mistakes and loss. But on the other hand I have the upmost respect for you for your honesty of where you went wrong. I hope you have found it in your heart to forgive yourself. And equally your ex has found in her heart to forgive you. Best wishes.

This song is perfection. Absolute perfection. I've become obsessed with it. I hadn't ever heard it before this week (and I'm 64!)...I'm in the middle of a piano course at the moment, and have chosen this song to learn and perform, because I can think of nothing I'd rather play. If this is the only song I ever play, I'll be more than happy.

When I was dating my wife 30+ years ago, she had a piano in her house and she had this sheet music on the piano. I had never played piano before (but I could read music) and I taught myself the song. Every time I came to pick her up for a date I would practice a little more. 30 years later, we have our own piano and this is one of my favorite songs to play.

I think Mr. Joel said at one point that the tune was based on the poignant English folk song, Barbara Allen.

I find it strange that two of the most moving songs Billy has written oth are played with almost a chord per word, both are super moving songs and in fact it sounds like the piano is doing the singing, but despite that tbe words paint a completely different picture, it is one of a real and heartfelt warmth of love for someone, in this case his daughter Elexa. Its amazing how fully this feeling eminates, righ down to the last word. I have been in the music game for near on seventy seven years, and recall the fact that someone once said that if you wanted to write meaningful songs, take a good long look at your own life, i think it was Niel Diamond, proving the fact to be true he wrote " Hallo my friend" I think Billy has know about this well of never ending beauty in words fora good part of his long standing, record breaking stand for music. I am so pleased that he did, he is a stand alone artist of the music world, Who can still enchant a huge crowd, who it seems have remembered every word, great stuff Billy, may it long continue!!!!

Once again another close relative is in a mental health crisis compounded with Alcoholism and drug use. The entire family is excruciatingly effected and relationships among each other ( his siblings and his children) are a stew of solidarity mixed with animosity towards each other. For me this song captures my 3:43 sadness, grief, powerlessness and letting go, ceasing of stepping in -saving him from ruinous financial, physical, medical and emotional Ruin. Not my first rodeo with this in the past 40 + yrs. It doesn’t get any easier. Addiction effects the whole family. Knows no social or economic boundaries. It is an EQUAL Opportunity Destroyer. 🎶🎵🎶🎵. And so it goes. And so it goes 🎵🎶🎵🎶
