Name me a bad song on "The Stranger" album? Who doesn't love this iconic Billy Joel hit? Great selection, Jami, and reaction, too, Harri!

@@Imadrummin So spot on! You couldn't put it any better. If the only BJ songs I could ever listen to for the rest of my days were off of The Stranger and 52nd Street albums, I could live with that.

Back in college, friends and I stayed up late drinking beer. We found this album left in a closet from previous residents. Listened to this song and “My Life” over and over. The next morning, I wasn’t feeling too great and had “heart attack ack ack ack ack ack” running through my throbbing head. Can’t hear this song without remembering that experience.

@@amyk9175 Yeah Movin' Out was on The Stranger album from 1977 and My Life was on 52nd Street from 1978, but both were on Billy's Greatest Hits I and II from 1985 but I think it was just when you said "this album" that threw the other poster. A little bit of trivia here, 52nd Street was the first mass released commercial CD album.

From "The Stranger" album released in 1977, Moving Out, is a beautiful song with great Billy Joe's vocals that made it to Number 17 on the charts. Billy first wrote it as a soft ballad tune but his band told him it sounded too much like Neil Sedaka's"Laughter In the Rain". So Billy made it into a more rocking tune with phenomenal instruments. The car at the end was Doug Stegmeyer's Corvette that they taped with a mike hanging out of the car. Fabulous tune. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jami. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

My Dad remembered this song for the "-ack-ack-ack" part, when my Brother played this album, a lot, in 1978. 🙃 "The Stranger" is one of Joel's true masterpiece albums. And the character study of people in his neighborhood, and the locations -observant lyrics.

In an interview with B.J. He explained the ak ak ak . He told this producer he wanted reverb to make it sound like Heart attack ak ak ak ak. He sang it. The producer said " No, just do what you just did." Billy did it and it was the hook that sold the song.

This song has so many meanings to me, being someone that was 17 when it came out. The burnout near the end was the way of saying f-you to the world, in the 70's.

Harri I'm so happy to watch a reaction from someone who truly gets it and expresses the getting it, too many times it's just the feel or the rythym but with you its all that and the meaning/message/story and I really appreciate that. Growing up with Billy Joel and his music in the 80's I so enjoyed how much his message from NJ and rythym could move me down in Texas and I knew if it was doig that it was moving the world and I took great comfort and joy in that knowledge.

KIronically the song was a big hit in Spring 1978, just as I moved out of my parents house during college, for the very first time to start my 5th year in college the next fall. I got lonesome for home, parents, brother and dog REAL fast, lol. They were only 7-8 miles away!!! Now, they are all gone...there's only me left....what turn of events over a lifetime...I was older than my brother. I do have my adult kids [out of the house also], wife, and two sneaky little cats.

Lot of great Hip Hop samples on this album, this song was flipped by Heatmakerz for Dipset and Das Racist used it later, and the intro piano to the second song was used by Pro Era, and that’s just the first two songs there’s probably a lot more

Not trying to be a dick here but I think you are mixing up this song with Only the Good Die Young. This song Movin' Out was written music first and then lyrics in Billy's usual way but his then drummer Liberty Devitto said that the tune was to Neil Sedaka's song Laughter In The Rain. Billy did not want to waste the lyrics though and so he wrote new music to them, with the feel of the song meaning to have a prog-rock vibe to it reminiscent of the band Yes.

You totally nailed his meaning-- the pointless hard work to achieve the overated "American Dream," a luxury car and a house in the suburbs, which here are a Cadillac and Hackensack, New Jersey, definitely not worth the effort.
