There were so many hits on the 52nd Street that this one just didn't get the airplay that some of the other songs received. I really loved this song. I'm glad he did perform it at concerts quite a lot.

Oh, that saxophone solo. This song starts out great, and just when you think it can't get better, Richie Cannata's sax informs you that you were very mistaken.

Billy Joel is a genius. Back when the album came out, they released singles. I don't believe this song was ever released as a single - certainly not an A Side. Those of us who bought the 33 1/3 albums were treated to a whole bunch of amazing songs that were never singles. I love virtually everything he has done. You can pick pretty much any Billy Joel song and find something clever and creative in it! One of my favorite deep cuts is "Sleeping With the Television On" from Glass Houses!

Since 52nd Street is essentially full of great deep cuts, I will point to "Everybody Has a Dream" from The Stranger and "She's Right on Time" from The Nylon Curtain for my recommendations.

Billy Joel's absolute masterpiece. Only reason I think it didn't get airplay was the length. But OMG, listen to this song late at night and just envision hurrying home to the love of your life 😊

In the winter of '88 I relocated to Austin, TX to be with a girl I met in college. I soon took a job, and after giving my time to total strangers each day, I'd pop the back half of 52nd Street into my Mercury's cassette player and listen to this song each night on the ride home. Regrettably, my college flame's light burned out when she passed of cancer a few years later. Seems a lifetime ago, but the memories still resurface from time to time, and most especially whenever I hear this fantastic song. Man, music is a powerful thing. Fantastic pick, and a 100% fitting and worthy reaction to boot. Many thanks for this one.

As a self-described Billy Joel super-fan, I agree this is one of his most under-appreciated songs. It comes right before the last track of the album, and I don't think it was ever made into a single, so it's easy to see why it gets overlooked. But a lot of Joel's albums tried to tell a greater story, and Until the Night's place within the story of the 52nd Street album is essential. It comes right after the exuberant and care-free "Half a Mile Away," and gives a sense of longing reverie to bridge between that song and the hangover that is the title track of "52nd Street." Anyway. Yes, this is an amazing song. No, nobody's heard of it. And that's a shame.

What a great comment! Following Half A Mile Away was such great placement. I am the biggest Billy Joel fan ever lol! Love when I see people truly understanding his off the charts talents.

Great reaction! This track is an absolute stunner that I’ve loved since its release. Hearing it now, after a long absence, takes me back to first hearing. The best FM station in Memphis at the time, featured this entire album at midnight upon its release, and I listened to it through headphones in a darkened room. Every track is special, but this one hit me heavy, and I’ve loved it ever since.

This was one of my top favorite Billy Joel songs when I was a kid (I had all his albums on cassette when I was in 7th/8th grade). It used to make me cry, it was so passionate and romantic had such a powerful bridge, absolutely LOVE that build-up to the sax. Even after all these years it still gives me goosebumps. And also after all these years, I had to sing along with that part at least. To be honest, I never got the Righteous Brothers connection until recently! Big DUH moment for me. Bill Medley did cover this song in 1981, but wasn’t very happy with how his version turned out. Without the angelic voice of Bobby Hatfield it seemed to be lacking. I don’t think this song was ever released as a single in the US. Billy always let the record company pick the singles. A lot of Billy’s best music are album cuts. It’s a great dive into those deep cuts though. Thanks Harri, great reaction.

It IS a great song, Harri. It is my favorite from 52nd Street. Probably the reason it wasn't bigger is that it only was released as a single in the UK. It was too long to be a marketable single in the US; in ran about 6.35, and to cut out any of it would have been criminal. Like Billy said in "The Entertainer", "if you wanna have a hit, you gotta make it fit, so they cut it down to three-oh-five". Strangely enough, "Goodnight, Saigon" from Nylon Curtain is about as long and became a huge success. What a difference a few years make (1978 to 1982).

As much as I like Mark Rivera (Billy's saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist for nearly 40 years), Richie Cannata on sax and clarinet in the late '70s is THE woodwind sound of Billy Joel for me. But, in general, whenever Billy put sax and/or clarinet on a track, it was a thing of beauty.

Hi Harri, a happy new year to you and yours, let's hope 2023, is a better year for all of us. Like you, I find it hard to find fault with Billy Joel and I agree with you, he is undoubtedly a genius. I don't think he ever made a bad album, but this one might just be my favourite, although that is like trying to choose a favourite child, impossible. I saw him live a few times when songs from this album featured heavily, there wasn't a weak link in the chain. Apart from his stunningly good core band, this album was augmented with a stellar cast of session musicians, a lot of whom had jazz chops. I don't think you have covered Zanzibar, yet, please do, it's a stunner, with a fabulous flugelhorn solo, by the late, great Freddie Hubbard and is probably the jazziest track he recorded. I hope your obvious liking for Mr. Joel, continues, because I am enjoying it every bit as much as you are, keep up the good work!!! 😎😎😎

As a bonus I’m attaching one of Bill’s latest songs, a great blues ballad called This Will Be the Last Time, performed in 2016. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJ9ln66d2qq3pGQ.html I hope to see this live when I attend Bill’s concert in October. I loved this song from the first time playing the album, but since he never released it as a single, the only people who ever heard it were people who bought the album. Even on FM radio at the time, where DJs were playing album tracks, I never heard this song. Maybe it was too obvious a Righteous Brothers pastiche. Maybe it was because by that time Billy Joel was a pop artist (after hits like Moving Out and Just the Way You Are), so the DJs didn't really dig into his albums for the other hidden gems. It's too bad. It's such a dramatic song, and it really pulls you along into the drama.

Why wasn't "Until the Night" a big hit? Man, you gotta look at the other stuff on the 52nd Street album. When a song as good as this one *doesn't make the cut* it's because there's some other damn good stuff on there. "My Life," "Big Shot", "Honesty", and "Zanzibar" were and are *so good.* And "Stiletto" (another one you must do!) could easily have been another.
