@Who's That Tripping Over My Bridge? they are great musicians, they supported Billy, but Billy would have been a superstar with any other great musicians. He wrote all the songs, lyrics, arrangements. Some songs would be different without Liberty, but Billy would be a huge star anyways because of his songwriting & singing skills. And he did not fuck them over, he changed his style, he was in a creative crisis, he accepted Korchmar's suggestion for new session musicians, then he needed to renew himself as a performer. He paid them their fair share for everyone through years of collaborating, you can be sure of that. Liberty having some personal issue (Billy never disclosed the details for Liberty's sake), Stegmeyer having depression, Javors not playing any notes live (they separated his track from the others and there was no music coming from his guitar just plucking), how is that Billy fucking them over?

@@egett I would steer clear of absolving Billy of any wrongdoing with this band. The manner in which he let them go was callous and not in line with how he fought to have them earlier in his career. He got paranoid, his manager screwed him, so he got tight with his money and who he hired. You're right, he could have had success with other musicians because of his songwriting talent, but he didn't. He made it with THESE guys, and for that they deserved more respect from him than they got in the end. I mean, he released about one and half albums without this band after he dismissed them and hasn't released an album since. He knows what he had with them.

That's what I love about acts like Billy Joel, Queen, Elton John, David Bowie...they could throw a dart at long list of genres and styles and could tackle them without a stumble. Billy does whatever he wants musically, and it's always great.

You see children... this is what you call a "PERFORMER", you see, yes he's hopping around like a spaz, but at least you can tell he loves his job WAY more than the money he makes from it (which ain't half bad either), you can tell it's from the heart,and not some robotic, choreographed, dance routine.

I had the privilege of seeing his tours in 1980, 1982 and 1983. As good as he's been in the years since, he was otherworldly in the early 1980s. I saw him run around like a nut between keyboards on all 4 corners of his stage, somersault off a piano, & climb about 20 ft up the lighting cables. All while singing immaculately, with no lip-syncing. Immense performer.

Back in the day……nobody did “live” better than Billy….,,, except for Springsteen, Elton, and Bowie and all of the performers in the class we had a good in the 70s 80s and 90s…. So it can go on and on not. 🎹🎹😎😎🎷🎺🎷🎹🎹

@@Matsi990 I still have the big tour book with all the promo photos of the band on stage. The stage was a bit unique (by 1980 standards) in that the ramps leading up to the keyboards on the corners, plus the area where he stood in the middle, were metal grates that they shone lights thru from underneath, giving the stage a really cool effect.

This is the opening track to the album “Glass Houses” (1980). Before it starts, we hear the sound of shattered glass to match the cover picture of the musician throwing a rock into the window of an all-glass house. A parody of the saying, “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” The house was Joel’s own home in Cove Neck on Long Island… which might explain why he didn’t actually throw the rock❕ In “You May Be Right” (1980), Joel takes the persona of a man who is told he is reckless. He confirms it, admitting that he is crazy and praising the virtues of a more carefree, but risky existence. The singer-songwriter tends to prefer his more obscure songs over his hits, but “You May Be Right” is one of his favourites. He listed it as one of his Top 5. It took a lot of effort to achieve the shattered-glass effect. Producer Phil Ramone explained : “We didn’t want a typical glass-break effect. We wanted the kind of sound that comes when a large plate glass window breaks, and there’s a split-second delay between the crack and the entire sheet crumbling to the ground.” They placed sheets of glass on cinder blocks and smashed them with different types of hammers, but none produced the right sound. The problem was : the glass was too thin. To achieve an appalling shatter, they needed to suspend panes of glass that were more than a quarter-inch thick. Ramone recalled : “The following day, I ordered the right glass. When it was delivered, I placed a piece over two wooden horses and smashed it from above. I miked the hell out of it; there were microphones all over the studio […]. It took nearly thirty sheets of glass, and the best-sounding take came on the last piece, with one crack of the hammer. The time and expense were worth it : the harrowing glass-break we captured gave ‘Glass Houses’ the pluperfect kickoff it deserved.” 🥽🔨💜🥽💛🔨💚

The drummer is beating the crap out of his drum kit and I love it! He's a big guy, making the drums look small like they could topple over any second. I don't know who wrote the drum part in this fantastic song, but it's excellent. I especially love the part where he hits the drums for 4 fast beats, and throughout the whole song. I really think the drums make this song extra great!!!!

This was my "coming of age" album for sure. I thought Billy was more my best friend's young mom's music until this album. Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Gershwin, and NYC all rolled up into a great album

As great as he is as a music composer, he was something special on stage. You’re fortunate there is a pretty good catalog of concert videos but it doesn’t compare to what it was like to be there.

Hahaha Billy messed up the lyrics in the beginning is classic because he played it off so well! Being a professional drummer with touring experience, we all do it. So professional. Boys playing music and having a great time!
