@CMW Entertainment The note Billy Porter hits in this video during the first “why” is an f5, which is a step down from most cast recordings and the movie, where normally Jesus hits the G5 that Ian Gillian improvised during the recording of the concept album. As he got older, Ted Neeley started to “opt down” to an f5, which is still astronomically high lol. Everything else you’ve said is still correct.

Think of the orchestral and music direction when Billy was in this production (1998). It's quite clear he was going for a late 90's rock vibe. It's quite impressive actually how he can shift styles in his voice so well. To go from this to Kinky Boots is amazing

ok this is in my top two "WHY" moments for sure for sure for sure, but where other performances have failed this one succeeds in truly integrating that one rockstar high note in with the rest of the song. this is by a narrow margin the best "why", but by FAR the best overall performance imho

Contrary to your comment, I think his acting is very much “there”! He doesn’t have to be over the top to get the point across, as I’ve seen with many portrayals of Jesus in this show

I agree always gina sing he is so accomplished although this song resonates what kind of singer he is, growing into and has become. Look at him in pose, Oh dear lord that man can act, he makes you feel things you'd never ever dare think abo0ut and make us devel int places where people turn a naked eye, stay silent, stay mute as the series presents the Aids epidemic before & even now although its not as bad at hospitals people still are afraid and to be honest people are still being careless and having to many sexual partners is now acceptable again but its not. son this man tell us with blanca about their story and many other men that have lived in shame. Billy is a beautiful singersactor

Really nice to see a different take on it rather than the obvious sort of Barry Gibb style of singing, although this performance has flaws I can really feel the anguish in his voice.

That's correct. The high note in Gethsemane has always been optional.

Not a perfect version of this song, but its pretty good. I would have loved to see John Legend do a version more like this, but unsure if he has the type of voice to hit those higher harder notes.

Why is it that whenever they cast a black man to play the role of Jesus in this musical they always seem to mess up this song? John Legend is a prime example of that. But this dude totally blew this song out of the water. He sounds almost like a gospel singer. All the black guys who want to play Jesus in any future production of Jesus Christ Superstar should follow this guy's example.
