This song has such meaning to me. When I was a baby my father would sing this song to me and rock me to sleep. I grew up and realized the adult woman in the song was now me. I have ptsd, anxiety, and medication resistant bipolar. I listen to this song for comfort. I need someone to sit through the long nights with me. And I am also Irish so it also has a special place in my heart because of that.

I wish I could be there for you through the long night but I probably live too far away and you would never accept my help if you saw what a monster I am.

This is absolutely one of my favorite songs period; let alone by Billy Joel. Thanks soooo much for sharing this story. I crave to hear how artists come up with some of their best or simply good songs. means a lot.

The song seems very Beatle-esque to me, at least musically. Something that McCartney might have written during the 'Rubber Soul' period. Actually, his voice recalls McCartney, but the writing is more like Lennon.

My favorite song by Billy Joel too. So much like a song I need to write to my wife. After 5 years I realize everything she is pissed off about that she takes out on me has nothing to do with me.

The great songwriter Jimmy Webb said in his book Tunesmith in 1998 that Through The Long Night was like finding a brilliant outtake from Rubber Soul. I think it's possibly Billy's best song.... or And So It Goes on another day!

Apparently, the "personal" story that Billy alluded to but didn't address, here, was staying up all night at a Long Island hospital with his then sister-in-law, waiting for word whether her guy would survive a horrific car crash. He didn't.

Billy joel was possibly inspired by the song "yes it is" by John lennon. remember the guitar effect is very similar to George Harrison in that song.

Sounds like it was heavily influenced, at least musically, by the Norse folk song Gjendines Bånlåt.

I’ve always thought this song could be about miscarriage...

That was always my interpretation. The bleed to know line. I imagine it would haunt anyone who’s been through it & could just be filtered through my experience. But really he doesn’t explain it, just that she was vulnerable, it wasn’t a suicide attempt & it’s private. So, I’m sticking with miscarriage. Even an abortion that she wasn’t sure about. Something along those lines. The beauty of music is that it’s subjective. Whatever it meant to him is the source but it changes with every listener bringing their own meaning to it.
